There is widespread public support for this acquisition throughout Southeast Alaska. Project This property is the largest single in-holding on Admiralty Island. Shee Atika Inc. was conveyed Description these interests to fulfill its land entitlement under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The tracts are located along and inland from the western shore of the island. With the exception of limited shoreline frontage at Cube Cove, the tract is entirely surrounded by Admiralty Island National Monument/Kootznoowoo Wilderness. Kootznoowoo, the traditional Tlingit name for the island, translates into “Fortress of the Bears”. This is a fitting name because Admiralty is renowned for supporting one of the largest concentrations of coastal brown bear in the world. The tracts contain three major watersheds. Forest Service recreation cabins are located within land interests reserved in the patent. Numerous streams of all classes are also present. Acquisition will result in a large-scale consolidation of ownership and preservation or restoration of the unique coastal island ecosystem in perpetuity. Intact ecosystems provide for forest resiliency from the effects of climate change. Congress has long indicated its intent that the United States reacquire either the surface estate, or both the surface and subsurface estates, of these tracts. See Section 502 of the Tongass Timber Reform Act, P.L. 101-626 (1990). O&M Cost Estimated “start up” costs: $10,000 Estimated annual maintenance: $0 USDA Goal Restore, sustain and enhance the Nation’s forests by restoring and maintaining healthy watersheds, riparian habitats and habitat used by terrestrial species; preventing conversion to other uses; maintaining intact ecosystems to withstand the effects of climate change. Provide public access, quality recreation experiences, and enjoyment of natural resources under management as National Monument/Wilderness. 3404 2804 3855 4164 3877 3781 C 3316 r e e k 1460 3697 3540 4010 2547 192 65 2292 4334 Whe S el q er u a re WC Co 368 ve 2011 Acquisition Parcels 4311 Cube Cove - Admiralty Island 3396 4516 364 Proposed Acquisition Parcels C r e e k Creek T ler Whee N Cu LTF 1118 b E e Logging Cam p Co Point ve M Hepburn 3181 3768 Arm 2 WC U N 2734 O L A N D 2944 A D M I R A L T Y I S 3778 M WC e k a L t u 6 n 9 2 ea P e Kathleen La k D N A T I O N A L M O N U M E N T 47 3 L Ka a k th e le en S 4 73 N S Lake K athleen 2370 3560 L Ca bin (FS ) E A A N Jew 2 2006 3242 R N Jims Cove 371 L E O WC D I L S I T T O N G A S S A W I 3638 3305 N A D M I R A L T Y I S L A N D 3467 L F O R E S T N A T I O N A Ward Y Cr C ee r k e e D k T N 767 Ward L A L O W A O S I L D Tax 2 I E W 3394 R N R O E 2540 S T S E 940 N A T I O N A L F O R S 3071 O I N Z M T 3482 Y O T Rence 3361 O D L K 3092 t A a l A F R East Lake Florence I Cabin (FS) l a d 1 i 56 2775 T 3742 M ence Lak e Florence 135 Flor B D 135 e O Lak WC West Lake Florence U Cab in (FS ) K O O T Z N O O W O O W I L D E R N E S S N A D A R 340 Y Fishery Point 2068 3565 T C 3897 I R T S I D 3497 3238 R E Future Acquisition Parcels 322 G WC N A Fish R er y Kootznoowoo ery Fish Creek F Sad 2 Wilderness Area ish A ery K T I C S r 1304 To n g a s s 2767 F i s h e r y C r e e k T Marble Bluffs N N a tt ii o n a ll F o rr e s tt E 889 1575 M U S N S 2136 O E 2437 3305 N M WC 2495 R 1803 Vicinity Map 2365 E L D A D L Cube Cove - Admiralty Island N I N O W I A Legend National Monument Wilderness T L O A S N FY 2012 LWCF O 2011 Acquisition Parcels I W This map depicts USDA Forest Service Land Status Record data O Proposed Acquisition Parcels O and the approximate location of the proposed purchase parcel.
