Sixth Form & College Enrolment for 2020-21 Sixth Form & College Enrolment for 2020-21 16K=307/17K=326/18K=346/19K=365 SW1E 5ND 75/133/215 712 August 2020 This bulletin lists details of open enrolment, application and advice events at sixth forms and further education colleges that may be of interest to young people from Central London. Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation many institutions have moved to online enrolment and cancelled information and advice events or moved them online. Institutions still listing places available for September 2020 entry when this bulletin was published are highlighted in red. The information was correct at the point of publication, but events are added and changed regularly, so we strongly recommend checking with the sixth form or college. It is also important to check the documentation needed for enrolment - most colleges and sixth forms ask for proof of Identity/nationality and exam results. Contact details for enquiries are listed for each institution, along with links to any web pages with details of events and registration. For those thinking about attending college or sixth for (as well as everyone else) it is important to follow advice from the government at www.gov.uk/coronavirus and the NHS at https://tinyurl.com/vccz7ux. • Proposed College Merger Between HCUC (Harrow College & Uxbridge
Proposed College Merger between HCUC (Harrow College & Uxbridge College) and Richmond upon Thames College FAQs 1. Why is the merger being considered? The merger proposal emerged from a robust Structure and Prospects Appraisal undertaken by the governing body of Richmond upon Thames College in conjunction with the Government’s Further Education Commissioner. The recommendation of this appraisal was that RuTC should merge with Harrow College and Uxbridge College (HCUC) to create a sustainable college group. We are confident that by joining forces we will be able to do more for our learners, and the delivery of a high-quality learner experience is at the centre of our proposals. Both HCUC and RuTC are committed to ensuring that the benefits to learners increase as a result of this merger, including a shared prioritising of students achieving more, progressing further and being more work ready. Through the merger the colleges will be “Better Together – Stronger Together”. 2. What are the benefits of merging? • Learner Experience - Current and new students can expect a new college partnership which recognises their individuality and provides a responsive and inspiring programme of study that enables them to progress on to new learning opportunities, university, apprenticeships or employment and supports them in achieving their ambitions. There will be an enhanced offer to students across all colleges, greater learning opportunities and more progression routes. • Quality - Excellent teaching and learning that delivers outstanding outcomes for our learners is at the heart of this merger proposal. By joining forces, we will have the combined strength, expertise and resources to accelerate the achievement of improved standards and we will be able to implement a programme of rapid quality improvement.

  • Open Letter to Address Systemic Racism in Further Education
BLACK FURTHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP GROUP 5th August 2020 Open letter to address systemic racism in further education Open letter to: Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson MP, Secretary of State for Education, funders of further education colleges; regulatory bodies & further education membership bodies. We, the undersigned, are a group of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) senior leaders, and allies, who work or have an interest in the UK further education (FE) sector. The recent #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) global protest following the brutal murder of George Floyd compels us all to revisit how we address the pervasive racism that continues to taint and damage our society. The openness, solidarity and resolve stirred by #BLM is unprecedented and starkly exposes the lack of progress made in race equality since ‘The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry’. Against a background of raised concerns about neglect in healthcare, impunity of policing, cruelty of immigration systems – and in education, the erasure of history, it is only right for us to assess how we are performing in FE. Only by doing so, can we collectively address the barriers that our students, staff and communities face. The personal, economic and social costs of racial inequality are just too great to ignore. At a time of elevated advocacy for FE, failure to recognise the insidious nature of racism undermines the sector’s ability to fully engage with all its constituent communities. The supporting data and our lived experiences present an uncomfortable truth, that too many BAME students and staff have for far too long encountered a hostile environment and a system that places a ‘knee on our neck’.

  • Statistical Report 2015-16
Statistical report 2015-16 The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is exceeding all expectations in Lambeth. More young people than ever before are taking part in and completing our valued programme. It has been an exceptional year. Schools in Lambeth recognise the importance of offering the DofE to their pupils. Participation in a DofE programme accelerates progress and attainment by encouraging independent learners and enhancing resilience, self-esteem and problem solving abilities. The link between DofE programmes and the new Ofsted framework is therefore an obvious one, and it is of little surprise that schools are opting to embrace the DofE in their wider offer. The diversity of organisations who offer the programme and the levels offered within existing centres have both been expanded. I am excited to be welcoming a number of new schools, colleges and youth groups to the programme and I am strongly encouraged by the increase in take up of the Gold award throughout the borough. The result is that the benefits of the DofE are available to more young people than ever before and is demonstrative of one of our guiding principles: the DofE is achievable by all. Whilst we are delighted with an increased demand and continued growth, it is important that we understand the pressure that this puts on our resources. The growth in the DofE and the progress that has been shown over such a small period of time is indicative of the potential within the borough. Continued investment into the skills and structure of our staff teams is essential to ensure young people are supported to complete their whole award and realise their potential.

Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea School Organisation and Investment Strategy 2016 Introduction The number of pupils on roll in state-funded schools in Kensington & Chelsea at the start of the 2015/16 academic year (both resident and non-resident) is as follows: 1 193 at 4 Nursery schools 7,282 at 26 Primary schools (6,800 plus 482 nursery) 4,822 at 6 Secondary schools (4,090 plus 732 in 6th forms) In addition: 50 at Latimer Alternative Provision Academy 96 at Chelsea Community Hospital School The population of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea dropped from 169,494 to 155,594 in 2013 but has now risen to 158,741 in 2015. Nevertheless it is one of the most densely populated areas in Europe. The population turnover is estimated at 20% per year. Two wards are among the 10% most deprived in England and our schools have more than twice the national rate of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school population includes a rich diversity of cultures. Many new pupils are likely to be refugees, asylum seekers or from a transient population. Over 50% of the Borough’s school-aged population is of ethnic origin and nearly half identify English as a second language. According to the latest GLA projections the primary school population is expected to be significantly lower than was forecast in 2015 and by 2026 it will be nearly 1,000 lower. By contrast the projected number at secondary level is higher. By 2021 that number will be nearly 500 higher before leveling off by 2026.

  • Harris Academy Peckham 112 Peckham Road, London SE15 5DZ
School report Inspection of a good school: Harris Academy Peckham 112 Peckham Road, London SE15 5DZ Inspection dates: 11–12 December 2019 Outcome Harris Academy Peckham continues to be a good school. What is it like to attend this school? Pupils have noticed the improvements that have taken place in the school over the last two years. In particular, behaviour has improved, and most pupils now achieve well in a wide range of subjects at GCSE. Staff give much thought to how pupils learn. This has resulted in a whole-school approach to teaching that enables pupils to learn more and make stronger progress through the curriculum. However, some teachers require further support to implement the curriculum to the high standards that leaders have rightly set. Pupils behave well in school and say that they are able to learn. They like the many opportunities that the school offers them. For instance, a wide range of activities is offered after school, ranging from technology activities to sports. These are very popular. Music is a big strength of the school’s curriculum. All pupils in Year 7 and the majority of Year 8 learn to play a musical instrument. They also learn about famous composers in depth. Pupils appreciate the work staff do to keep them safe. They told us that bullying is uncommon, but if it does occur it is quickly dealt with by the teachers. The school’s approach is to work with the family to solve any problems. This ensures that the solutions agreed have a positive impact in the longer term.
