MACFARLANE *** NIDICOLOUS MITES SUMMARY : The mites (Acari) found in seven nests of the Dipper, Cinclus cinclus DIPPER aquaticus Bechstein, in Wales, British Isles, are studied. They belong to 54 species, WALES included in 46 genera, 27 families and 4 orders. This collection includes several stored food pests or species able to invade houses or to produce respiratory allergies in man, e.g. Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), T. longior (Gervais), T. palmarum Oude­ mans, Acarus fan'is (Oudemans), Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes and Kleemannia plumigera (Oudemans). Several fleas, Dasypsyllus g. gallinae (Dale), found in one nest, were parasitized by phoretic hypopi of Acarus avicolus Fain and Beaucournu. Tyrophagus nidicola Dambre-Raes, 1974, is considered here as a synonym of Tyrophagus palmarum Oudemans, 1924. Les especes PAYS DE GALLES recoltees sont au nombre de 54, elles font partie de 46 genres, 27 familIes et 4 ordres d'Acariens. Cette collection comprend plusieurs especes qui sont habituellement rencontrees dans des matieres alimentaires entreposees ou sont capables d'envahir des maisons ou de provoquer des allergies respiratoires chez l'homme; c'est le cas notamment de Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), T. longior (Gervais), T. palmarum Oudemans, Acarusfan'is (Oudemans), Dermatophagoidesfarinae Hughes, Kleemannia plumigera (Oudemans). A maturity index for gamasid soil mites (Mesostigmata: Gamsina) as an indicator of environmental impacts of pollution on forest soils. Appl. Soil Ecol. 9, 447– 452) in five natural forest reserves in eastern Austria. These sites were assumed to be stable and undisturbed reference habitats. The maturity indices of the gamasine communities were near their maximum in the investigated stands, and thus performed well towards the ‘‘high end’’ of the total range of the index. An occasionally inundated floodplain forest yielded much lower values. However, the correlation of the index with humus type, as proposed by Ruf et al. (Ruf, A., Beck, L., Dreher, P., Hund-Rienke, K., Ro¨mbke, J., Spelda, J., 2003. A biological classification concept for the assessment of soil quality: ‘‘biological soil classification scheme’’ (BBSK). Agric. Ecosyst. Environ. 98, 263–271) for managed forests, was not found. This indicates that the humus form is not a good predictor of the index over its entire range and is inappropriate to assess the fit of test communities. Fourteen percent of the species in this study were omitted from index calculation because adequate data for their families are lacking.

Fenďa: Terrestrial Arthropods of selected caves in the silica plateau Abstract: In 1997, 1998 and 2002 a biospeleological research was carried out in three caves of the Slovak Karst orographic unit. The cavernicolous arthropods were investigated in the following caves, that are not open to public: (1) active fluviokarstic Milada Cave (length 800 m, entrance 420 m a. s. l.), (2) active fluviokarstic Majkova Cave (length 400 m, entrance 490 m a. s. l.) and (3) Drienka Cave (length 300 m, depth -85 m, entrance 508 m a. s. l.). Pitfall trapping with different fixation liquids, extraction of baits and organic debris (rotten wood) and hand collecting were used as basic collecting methods. In total over 120 arthropod species were registered during this study. Majority of collected species were belonged to inhabitants of entrance parts of the caves. Some troglobitic forms were restricted to the deeper spaces, e. g. palpigrade Eukoenenia spelaea (Peyerimhoff, 1902) and springtails Arrhopalites aggtelekiensis Stach, 1929, A. bifidus Stach, 1945, Pseudosinella aggtelekiensis (Stach, 1929) and Deuteraphorura schoenviszkyi (Loksa, 1967).

Spain Abstract The seminatural prairie of the Raña of Cañamero (Spain) is a degraded and unproductive agrosystem with acid and stony soils, and low coverage of xerophytic grasses. In a project about secondary reconversion of the raña-prairie to a more productive cropland, an experimental field (EF) was established to assess the effect on plot-productivity of the interaction between correction of soil pH (liming) with three cropping systems: a no-tilled and annually fertilized and improved prairies, and a conventionally-tilled forage crop. The EF model of management was designed as plant-conservative, because no herbicide was applied after seeding to preserve the post-emergence of wild herbs and the natural grass diversity of the prairie. Between 2008 and 2012, we analysed the effect of managing factors (initial conventional-tillage, fertilization, liming and cropping) and agricultural predictors (pH, C:N ratio, soil bulk density and herbaceous biomass) on the alpha(α)-diversity of one of the major group of soil animals, the oribatids.

Abstract: Edaphic Mesostigmata are important, because these feed on arthropods and other invertebrates which may affect natural equilibrium of other living micro-organisms. In order to study the fauna of mesostigmatic mites, samples of soil and litter were collected from different parts of Esfahan region. Mites were extracted by means of Berlese funnel, cleared in Lactic acid and mounted in Hoyer's medium. In this research, the world and Iranian distribution of species with some information about their habitats are provided. Two genera and 3 species were recorded as new records for Iran mite fauna that are marked by an asterisk. The list of identified genera and species is as follows: Ascidae: Arctoseius cetratus (Sellnick, 1940), A. pristinus* Karg, 1962, A. venustulus (Berlese, 1917), Gamasellodes bicolor (Berlese, 1918); Blattisociidae: Lasioseius sugawarai Ehara, 1964, L. youcefi Athias-Henriot, 1959; Melicharidae: Proctolaelaps pygmaeus (Muller, 1860); Parholaspididae: Proparholaspulus* angustatus* Ishikawa, 1987 Trachytidae: Uroseius* traegardhi* (Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1969).
