However, little is known about A. mixtum intraspecific variability and if morphological differentiation exists between populations across its geographic range. This study aimed to determine by electron microscopy the morphological vari- ability of A. mixtum populations in the state of Veracruz, which has a large livestock population Citation: Aguilar-Domínguez, M.; among states in Mexico. Forty male and 40 female A. mixtum collected from the 10 natural regions Romero-Salas, D.; Sánchez-Montes, S.; of Veracruz state were analyzed microscopically to accomplish main component analysis for each Serna-Lagunes, R.; Rosas-Saito, G.; sex. Morphometric variability in males was described using eight main components. pathogens10050533 Limited intraspecific variation was also observed between males. In males, the dendogram yielded six groups with similar morphometric characteristics. Morphometric analyses confirmed that the Academic Editor: Olivier Sparagano only species from the Amblyomma cajennense complex that are parasites to livestock in Veracruz state is A. mixtum. Introduction iations. Ticks are economically important ectoparasites of livestock [1]. Their economic impor- tance derives from the obligate blood feeding habit and role as vectors of pathogens causing significant morbidity and mortality in host populations [2]. Among the approximately 130 extant tick species in the genus Amblyomma worldwide, several impact livestock health Copyright: © 2021 by the authors. Moreover, the public health importance of A. mixtum stems from its host range that includes humans, and ability to vector zoonotic pathogens [10]. As it is the case with other Amblyomma species in Mexico [11], there are biological aspects of A. mixtum that remain to be defined. Veracruz is a state in Mexico with a diverse livestock population and the largest cattle herd comprising approximately 11% of the total national inventory [12,13]. Syntethic acari- cides are used to control ticks infesting livestock including A. mixtum. The indiscriminate use of acaricides is a major driver for the emergence of acaricide resistance among popu- lations of A. mixtum infesting livestock in Veracruz state [14]. This is concerning because evidence for the emergence of resistance to multiple classes of acaricides is in this three-host tick species even when gene flow associated with lack of genetic differentiation was docu- mented for A. mixtum populations in the same region [15]. However, studies to determine if morphological variation among A. mixtum population in Veracruz state remained to be conducted. Morphological anomalies associated with exposure to acaricides was reported for Amblyomma lepidum infesting cattle in Uganda [16]. This prompted morphological analysis of our tick collection to determine if a similar situation occurred in A. mixtum. Here, we re- port the morphometrics of A. mixtum collected from infested livestock and the surrounding agroecosystems representing the ten ecological regions in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. 2. Results Based on the results of the descriptive statistics of the morphological characters evaluated, it is observed that the males surpassed the females in terms of the dimensions of the CB, TL, LSII, HL, HW and Tal characters, in the remaining morphometric characters, both males and females did not show evident morphological differentiation (Table1). TICKS IN RELATION TO HUMAN DISEASES CAUSED BY RICKETTSIA SPECIES1,2 By HARRY HOOGSTRAAL Department oj Medical Zoology, United States Naval Medical Research Unit Number Three, Cairo, Egypt, U.A.R. Rickettsiae (185) are obligate intracellular parasites that multiply by binary fission in the cells of both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. They are pleomorphic coccobacillary bodies with complex cell walls containing muramic acid, and internal structures composed of ribonucleic and deoxyri bonucleic acids. Rickettsiae show independent metabolic activity with amino acids and intermediate carbohydrates as substrates, and are very susceptible to tetracyclines as well as to other antibiotics. They may be considered as fastidious bacteria whose major unique character is their obligate intracellu lar life, although there is at least one exception to this. In appearance, they range from coccoid forms 0.3 J.I. in diameter to long chains of bacillary forms. They are thus intermediate in size between most bacteria and filterable viruses, and form the family Rickettsiaceae Pinkerton. They stain poorly by Gram's method but well by the procedures of Macchiavello, Gimenez, and Giemsa.

Ehrlichiosis and Importance Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are tick-borne diseases caused by obligate Anaplasmosis: intracellular bacteria in the genera Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. These organisms are widespread in nature; the reservoir hosts include numerous wild animals, as well as Zoonotic Species some domesticated species. For many years, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species have been known to cause illness in pets and livestock. The consequences of exposure vary Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis, from asymptomatic infections to severe, potentially fatal illness. Some organisms Canine Hemorrhagic Fever, have also been recognized as human pathogens since the 1980s and 1990s. Tropical Canine Pancytopenia, Etiology Tracker Dog Disease, Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are caused by members of the genera Ehrlichia Canine Tick Typhus, and Anaplasma, respectively. Both genera contain small, pleomorphic, Gram negative, Nairobi Bleeding Disorder, obligate intracellular organisms, and belong to the family Anaplasmataceae, order Canine Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis, Rickettsiales. They are classified as α-proteobacteria. A number of Ehrlichia and Canine Granulocytic Anaplasmosis, Anaplasma species affect animals. A limited number of these organisms have also Equine Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis, been identified in people. GENETIC STRUCTURE OF AMBLYOMMA CAJENNENSE (ACARI: IXODIDAE) POPULATIONS BASED ON MITOCHONDRIAL GENE SEQUENCES by ERICA JANELLE BURKMAN (Under the Direction of Dr. Lorenza Beati) ABSTRACT Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) (Acari: Ixodidae) is a common tick species that has a large geographic distribution from the southern regions of the United States (Texas), to the Caribbean Islands, Central, and South America. This tick is a vector of the agent of Brazilian spotted fever, an often fatal disease in South America. Throughout its geographic range, populations of A. cajennense have shown differences in ecological adaptation while feeding on a variety of hosts ranging from livestock, birds, and humans. In order to examine the taxonomic status and phylogeographic evolution of this species, we analyzed mitochondrial 12S rDNA, control region (d-loop), and cytochrome oxidase II gene sequences of A.

  • Environmental Pressures and Population Concentration
AMBIVALENCES AND ASYMMETRIES IN THE URBANIZATION PROCESS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO: ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES AND POPULATION CONCENTRATION Cuauhtémoc León and Hipólito Rodríguez FRAMEWORK: A DEFINITION OF THIS SPACE Three different countries surround this great marine water body; human activities both inland and in coastal zones and marine areas have modified, and will continue to modify this space’s biochemical, ecosystemic and, of course, socio-economic conditions. Such activities can be formally identified as the Gulf of Mexico’s economic and social space. From a historical perspective, they have had certain common traits and have perhaps been evolving at different intensities, but at least in a parallel fashion. The pace of changes has left marks shaping the landscape that can be “read,” yet unfortunately, in most instances these comprise an expansion and sequence of deleterious transformations. The boundaries of the Gulf of Mexico and, therefore, of what is considered to be its coastal zone, were defined a priori. Actually, they are of an operational nature so as to be able to deal simultaneously with three dimensions: the terrestrial landscape analyzed as ecoregions; socio-demographic dynamics studied on the basis of municipalities (or counties); and urban cores or cities, which enable us to easily visualize population concentration. Thus, the coastal zone was delimited as a mostly terrestrial strip having municipal boundaries (and therefore jurisdictional ones) and landscape features. As a result, this is not necessarily a region in the economic or geographic sense but rather, most likely, it is composed of asymmetrical, disconnected, and perhaps complementary territorial and political units which at most depend upon one another to a certain degree.
