U.S.S. South Dakota—Transcript of Two Records H75-244 | 9382 June 7, 1941 – Camden, New Jersey Disk 1 [Lewis Fischer] This is the New York Shipbuilding Corporation here in Camden, New Jersey. Where we are about to witness the launching of the United States newest giant the 35,000 ton battleship, South Dakota. Directly opposite us, on the speakers stand is the sponsor Mrs. Harlan J. Bushfield, wife of the Governor of South Dakota. And at the moment Mrs. Bushfield is standing there at the bow of the ship with the christening bottle in her right hand, as a matter of fact she has both hands on it, sort of a baseball players batting stance waiting for the signal to be given when she will actually christen the South Dakota and she’ll go down the ways. (00:38) Standing directly behind her is the public relations, ah…official of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Mr. Fred Cornell, who has his left hand actually placed on the bow of the battleship waiting to detect the slightest movement. As soon as he feels her start down the ways he’ll give the signal to Mrs. Bushfield and the actual christening and the beginning of the ships sliding down the ways will be very nearly simultaneous. (01:09) There’s been about a twenty-five minute delay here this afternoon because the tide hasn’t been… just exactly right, ah…for the launching. This giant battleship completely fills these ways there is very little clearance on either side or at the top so that it’s a ticklish job to launch her without any leeway at all. -

Gilbert Arbiso Oral History July 6, 2001 Arthur Huseboe: This is an interview with Mr. Gil Arbiso, Junior. He's a crewmember of the battleship USS South Dakota. The interview was conducted by Arthur Huseboe on July 6, 2001, at the Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, during the reunion of the crew of the battleship. Now if you'll read your name and address, Gil. Gilbert Arbiso: For the record, my name Gilbert-- called Gil--Arbiso, Junior, and I came from the city of Stanton, California, in Orange County, right next to Disneyland. Huseboe: Your age when you enlisted? Arbiso: I was eighteen. Huseboe: How come you enlisted? Arbiso: I had an older brother in the Marine Corps, I had a brother in the Army--he was in Patton's Third Army. In high school, I graduated before everybody else so I could join the Navy so I could make a threesome. My mother tried to put a halt to it, and said no, you don't have to go. I remember my mother crying, and I said, "No, Mom, look, everything is going to be fine." I ended up going to San Diego. The funny part is--I learned something out of life-- you never go against your mother's wishes. When I got to San Diego, they processed the whole crew, and I was the last guy. It took everything in my power that it ever took, to convince those guys that even though I wasn't five feet tall, because every time they'd tell me to measure up to the wall, I was standing on my tippy toes. -

We had some very special visitors this month. First and foremost were Dale and Linda Drake. This was special because Linda is the daughter of the late Master Chief Gunner’s Mate Sam Saylor and, it’s safe to say, without Sam Saylor, there would be no USS SLATER preservation. Linda recalled that for years her visits were constantly interrupted with Sam's words, "Well, I take care of some SLATER business." It was the ship that was Sam's focus and sustained him through the last 20 years of his life. Linda and Dale made the trip from Omaha specifically to see USS SLATER because this was Linda’s first chance to see the fruit of all her father’s effort. Board President Tony Esposito greeted them as they toured the ship from stem to stern. Linda’s husband Dale is a former Marine, and he left Linda on the Observation Deck so he could take the bilge tour. He wanted to see everything. I do believe if we could get them to relocate to Albany we’d have two more dedicated volunteers. Linda brought along Sam's burial flag which we will fly for the month of August and then retire it to the USS CONNOLLY display in Sam’s honor. -

When he spotted small specks in the distance, he promptly radioed Midway: “Sighted main body. Bearing 262 distance 700.” PBYs could carry a crew of eight or nine and were powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 radial air-cooled engines at 1,200 horsepower each. The aircraft was 104 feet wide wing tip to wing tip and 63 feet 10 inches long from nose to tail. Catalinas were patrol planes that were used to spot enemy submarines, ships, and planes, escorted convoys, served as patrol bombers and occasionally made air and sea rescues. Many PBYs were manufactured in San Diego, but Reid’s aircraft was built in Canada. “Strawberry 5” was found in dilapidated condition at an airport in South Africa, but was lovingly restored over a period of six years. It was actually flown back to San Diego halfway across the planet – no small task for a 70-year old aircraft with a top speed of 120 miles per hour. The plane had to meet FAA regulations and was inspected by an FAA official before it could fly into US airspace. Lewis Glenn, Jr., USN Retired 1940 - 2012 2 The Jerseyman 3Q-2012 Rear Admiral W. Lewis Glenn, Jr. Rear Admiral W. Lewis Glenn, Jr., (USN-Ret) a highly decorated career Naval Sur- face Warfare Officer was surrounded by his family when he died on May 15, 2012, at the Carriage Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 71 and had bravely fought a long battle with a debilitating cognitive condition. Lew Glenn was born on September 7, 1940, the younger of the two sons of W. Lew- is Glenn, Sr. and Evelyn Lide Glenn, of Anderson, South Carolina. He graduated from Boys High in Anderson in 1958, and went on to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1962. Lew and his wife of 48 years, Julia Meeks Glenn, were childhood sweethearts and married on April 4, 1964. In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves three children: W. Lew- is Glenn III, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Margaret Glenn Chapman, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Russell Warren Glenn, of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; son-in-law Tobin Chapman; daughters-in-law Krista Newkirk and Jacqueline Glenn; and seven grandchildren: Tinsley, Conrad, Will, Eliana, Russell, Holden and Adeline. Also surviving are his brother, R. Lide Glenn; sister-in-law, Ada Moorhead; and brother-in-law, Richard Meeks and wife, Adya Meeks; six nieces, four nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews. Lew‘s naval service included a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969 as Flag Lieutenant to Admiral E.
