“When the Gunfire Ends”: Deconstructing PTSD Among Military Veterans in Marvel's the Punisher
“When the Gunfire Ends”: Deconstructing PTSD Among Military Veterans in Marvel’s The Punisher GRAEME JOHN WILSON In the field of American masculinity studies, few research topics are as prominent as the military. The military is “an institution populated with men, but it [also] plays a primary role in shaping images of masculinity in the larger society” (Barrett 129),1 yet “there is [no] consensus among all men and women in any national setting about the ideal man” (Nagel 247). The soldier is an especially enduring archetype of hegemonic masculinity, a concept describing the most currently honored and idealized forms of masculinity in a society (Connell and Messerschmidt 832). The popularity of this archetype can be partially attributed to the extensive representation that the American armed forces have enjoyed in mass media, with the grit, bravery, and heroism of the American soldier being not only celebrated in mainstream news media, but also mythologized in blockbuster Hollywood productions: Militaries around the world have defined the soldier as an embodiment of traditional male sex role behaviors. From recruiting posters that seek “a few good men” to popular media images of John Wayne fearlessly leading the troops in a World War II battle, Tom Cruise as a “top gun” pilot, or Sylvester Stallone as Rambo single-handedly rescuing American prisoners of war, there has long been an association between the military and images of masculinity. (Barrett 129) 1 Although women have since been integrated into the military and deployed in combat, the military remains a largely traditional institution “structured along the lines of gender,” with maleness being viewed as an inherent element of soldiering (Herbert 7-8). -
American Heritage Center
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING AMERICAN HERITAGE CENTER GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RESOURCES Child actress Mary Jane Irving with Bessie Barriscale and Ben Alexander in the 1918 silent film Heart of Rachel. Mary Jane Irving papers, American Heritage Center. Compiled by D. Claudia Thompson and Shaun A. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew. -

Feature In Full Bloom: The Development of Contemporary Chinese Animation (2) Fung Yuk-sung Cont’d from Newsletter Issue 68 for 1947-1976 Liberation and Creativity (1977–1989) The demise of the Gang of Four in the autumn of 1976 marked the end of the Cultural Revolution and ten years of turbulence in the country. After 1977, China implemented policies to ‘restore order after chaos,’ and also to reform and open the doors to international communication and exchange. Te Wei returned to his position as the head of the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, and Chinese animators welcomed a period of liberation, creativity and freedom of ideas. A Night in an Art Gallery, completed in 1978 and directed by A Da and others, is a fable that hints heavily at real-life events. It uses a visual style similar to that of a comic book to satirise the oppressive tyranny of the Gang of Four. It is a work that closely reflects the spirit of its times and how the people felt about the ten violent years that had just passed. A Night in an Art Gallery signified the end of a dark period and the beginning of a cultural renaissance. -

August 2019 #70 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Some Hidden Gems to Stream in the Era of Peak TV By Steve Sternberg In the era of Peak TV, there are more original scripted series on more platforms than ever before. Ten years ago, there were no streaming services – today, two-thirds of homes in the U.S. have at least one, and over the next year or two more major players are on the way. A few years from now, the majority of TV homes will probably subscribe to three or more streaming services. Some of the higher-profile original series, such as Netflix’s House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, Narcos, Black Mirror, and The Crown, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Looming Tower, and Amazon Prime Video’s The Man in the High Castle, Transparent, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, have won awards and received a lot of press coverage. So even though most viewers may not have actually watched them, many have at least heard of them (and might be among the first shows they check out when they subscribe to one of the major streaming services). There are numerous other good-to-great TV shows on these platforms that most people have probably never heard of. I’ve been analyzing television programming for more than 30 years and pride myself on keeping up with the TV/video landscape, and there are many shows I hadn’t been aware of until I started doing research for this report. I’ve already written about some of the best original series to stream and binge, highlighting such excellent shows as Amazon Prime Videos Bosch, Netflix’s Ozark and GLOW, and CBS All Access’s The Good Fight and Star Trek Discovery. -
