Indipendenza Studio is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Olivier Mosset. Mosset has been instrumental in raising questions about painting as an historic object. In the Sixties when he was part of the Parisian BMPT group (the acronym represents the initials of the surnames of the founding members: Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Niele Toroni and Michel Parmentier) his interests were already geared towards resetting pictorial practice and its minimum conditions of existence. His canvases were covered with geometric and elementary shapes. The aim was to give maximum value to the act of painting, not as a representative tool but as an object in its own right capable of modifying the context in which painting is operating. In the course of his practice Mosset has radicalised thinking about the medium in its most purely material aspect: canvas, frame, paint, surface, format, light. For the exhibition at Indipendenza Studio, Mosset presents a series of monochrome black and white canvases painted using a rubber polymer paint more commonly used for industrial purposes. With this series of works he continues to blur the concept of authorship working on the surface and its texture. Mosset's artistic practice and his questioning of painting's status have become an influential point of reference. Olivier Mosset was born in Bern in 1944 and lives and works in Tucson, Arizona. His work forms part of the permanent collections of MoMA, New York; the Pompidou Centre, Paris; the Migros Museum, Zurich; the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne; the Musée des Beaux Arts, La Chaux-De-Fonds, Switzerland; and the MAC, Lyon. Leur motif se prête, à vrai dire, très bien à cet emprunt aux théories littéraires de Barthes : en 1966-1967, Mosset peint une série de toiles blanches où figure, en rouge, la seule lettre « A » majuscule. Il faut bien commencer quelque part, et le début de l'alphabet semble tout indiqué. Faux départ, toutefois, puisque presque simultanément, il fait une autre peinture avec les mots « RIP » et une autre avec les mots « THE END », comme pour boucler le parcours au moment-même où il l'entamait. La suite de son travail sera empreinte de cette circularité : Mosset revient souvent sur des chantiers laissés un moment à l'abandon, recommençant par exemple aujourdhui la peinture monochrome, qu'il avait délaissée pendant un temps. En un sens (rétrospectif), cette circularité devient même en 1967 le motif de ses peintures, toutes identiques : un cercle noir au milieu d’une toile blanche de format carré. Mosset envisage alors de refaire cette même peinture indéfiniment, encore et encore. Bringing an extreme punk sensibility to bear on the history of abstraction, from the late seventies Parrino began to literally attack the canvas, piercing and tearing its surface, or twisting it off the stretcher to disrupt the conventional rectangular plane. These “misshaped” canvases painted in viscous enamel or lacquer, such as Spin-Out Vortex (Black Hole) (2000) and Skeletal Implosion (Thick Stripes) (2001), were in part muscular, performative responses to the refined aesthetics of abstract precedents. 13 Shattered Panels (for Joey Ramone) (2001) is a wall-size installation of plasterboard painted shiny black, a spontaneous and emotive abstract composition born out of destructive action and Parrino’s shrine to the punk legend whose rock band, The Ramones, forever changed the American music scene of the late seventies with driving reductive guitar rhythms and a minimalist visual style of black leather and torn jeans.

Early the following year, Mosset headed to Paris to work as an assistant to Jean Tinguely, who introduced him to other members of the Nouveau Réalisme movement—Mosset would later spend brief spells working under Niki de Saint Phalle and Daniel Spoerri—as well as to Otto Hahn, Alain Jouffroy, and other influ- ential critics. Tinguely also arranged for Mosset to meet Andy Warhol in New York. After mixing in these circles, Mosset soon formed his own opin- ions about the artistic debates of the time: wary of lyrical abstraction (the School of Paris), nonplussed by kinetic art, and a keen follower of the emerging Pop art movement. These opinions were reflected in the series of monochrome paintings, each featuring a circle, that he began producing in 1966. The Parrinos
THE PARRINOS Maybe it was luck, maybe it was meant to be. Or maybe luck is what's meant to be? Though not for everyone. Not for anyone unlucky in their lives, those for whom life is mostly what happens to them. There are others, conversely, propelled by an impatient nature, who set things in motion for themselves, attracting energies and minds similarly self-propelled—not so much a matter of physics as of sensibilities and ideas that mutually excite, that purposefully collide. The convergence of these four artists is and isn't an example of the old notion: opposites attract. They had as much in common as not. John Armleder and Olivier Mosset came from Europe. Cady Noland and Steven Parrino were decidedly American, formed and deformed by their tangled roots, all Americans, with the exception of Native Americans, having come from somewhere else. John and Olivier are Swiss and represent, to my mind, being with and against the country's supposed neutrality/conformity. Olivier, at a restless early age, having left for Paris in '65, to present his paintings soon after with BMPT (Buren, Mosset, Parmentier, Toroni), an association whose brevity in no way impeded its historical longevity, then went on to New York in '77, where he was based for many years. The fact that he traveled back and forth between New York and Europe, combined with a real curiosity for what others were doing — more so than for his own work? — made him a bridge, eventually an important connector, not only between Europe and the states but between generations.

These words, handwritten by Niele Toroni and posted near the gallery’s reception desk, greeted visitors to the artist’s recent exhibition “Un tout de différences” (A Set of Differences). The show featured the same monochrome imprints the artist has been making for more than fifty years, and the works were all titled, as usual, with blunt descriptiveness (e.g., Empreintes de pinceau N°50 à intervalles réguliers de 30 cm [Brush Impressions No. 50 at Regular Intervals of 30 cm]). Yet the familiar marks looked quite different post-Covid-19. Developed by Toroni in 1966 as a means of divorcing painting from traditional notions of authorship and originality (a concern he shared with the other founding members of the short-lived but influential BMPT group, also consisting of Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, and Michel Parmentier), the artist’s “travail/peinture” (work/painting) suddenly appeared inherently viral. As is always the case with Toroni’s work, the consistent and repetitive gesture provides a constant against which endless variables—physical, conceptual, political, or personal—inspire new and transient interpretations. Installed across the entire back wall of the gallery, a row of ten five-imprint paintings on canvas made in 2019 appeared to aptly illustrate viral replication. The varying colors of the imprints, which were yellow, red, gray, blue, and orange, suggested slight mutations in a strain of painting that’s been potent enough to stay alive for more than half a century.

GALERIE ANDREA CARATSCH PRESS RELEASE OLIVIER MOSSET MAY 27 – JULY 22 2016 From May 27 to July 22 2016, Galerie Andrea Caratsch is showing ‘Olivier Mosset’, an exhibition consisting of seven new large, monochrome, shaped canvases, accomplished by the artist in 2015. In front of a Mosset painting, the main confrontation is with the works materiality, and by extension the materiality of space within which it exists, and ultimately by our own realities, a condition that may or may not be welcome, but one that refuses to engage in myth, or indulge the egos of either the artist or viewer. Olivier Mosset seems to be constantly circling back to the same question, which is that painting is fundamentally a material plane, existing in space, and that the artist’s presence in the work may be in fact a distraction from the experience that the painting might provide. Combining playfulness with intellectual rigor, Mosset’s work is unusual in the history of painting. While many artists have their breakthrough and then go on to repeat it, Mosset’s work poses a challenge to the notion of a programmatic response to a set of aesthetic problems that come out of an artist’s struggle. For Mosset, the personality is beside the point. A painting exists for itself. This view contradicts much of what we assume about art and authorship. While artists like Duchamp, Warhol and Sturtevant have parodied these mythologies, they keep coming back. This is perhaps because they are not entirely creations of artists themselves, but the system within which their work is viewed.
