Olivier Mosset Art Basel 2018 Olivier Mosset Untitled "Blue / purple / blue", 2 0 0 8 acrylic on canvas 197 1.773 4,5 cm Unlimited, hall 1.1., U48 Olivier Mosset, Untitled (blue / purple / blue), 2008 197 x 1773 x 4.5 cm, acrylic on canvas « Une fourmi de dix-huit mètres […] ça n'existe pas » – Robert Desnos (engl. « An eighteen-metre ant […] doesn't exist ») Olivier Mosset, born in 1944 in Bern, once a member of the famous BMPT group with Daniel Buren, Niele Toroni and Michel Parmentier, who sought to democratize art through radical procedures of deskilling, implying that the art object was more important than its authorship, is nowadays widely recognized for his conducting of research into the future of painting through geometrical abstraction and monochromes. Living between two continents since 1977, Mosset remains one of the few artists in Europe that is involved in the French, Swiss and American artistic and critical contexts. Dating from 2008, the extremely large format acrylic canvas Untitled (blue / purple / blue), measuring 197 x 1773 cm and consisting of a group of three panels, each 2 x 6 meters and covered with blue and purple colour, does not represent a break with his early work, but should be regarded as a re-start, a re-presentation or even a re-production that continues his quest for blurring the margins of art. When we asked Olivier Mosset about the story behind this large format canvas he answered: “There is no story, but it was made and shown in China. Then Mosset reveals: “In fact, the story of China was that I met this gentlemen and they had this gallery that was pretty big and someone said: ‘Olivier, you have done 6 meter high monochromes in blue / yellow and pink / purple, you should do something like that’. -

Jack Goldstein; Distance Equals Control by David SaZZe This essay is offered as a compliment to the exhibition rather than an explication of specific works. The language used in this text is somewhat more general and anecdotal, and more given to metaphoric comparisons than what we have come to expect from art writing. I don't in this essay attempt to dissect a single ' - exemplar work, nor do I spend much time detailing the visual ,+ attributes of the works. This essay attempts instead to give a brief description of an ongoing process: the play of private fan- tasy, which itself grows out of the intersection of psychic necessity (desire)with the culturally available forms in which to voice that necessity (automaticity)becoming linked in a work of art to everyday, public images which then reenter and submerge themselves, via the appropriative nature of our attention, into a clouded pool of personal symbols. This three part process yields a two part result; a sense of control over what one has effected distance from, which is ironically expressed in a sense of anxiety embedded in the image used in a given work, and also a sense of sadness because of the loss one feels for the thing distanced. The result of this process is nostalgia for the present, which is the name given to a complex texture of imagizing in which mediation between extremes (differentiation) leads to a liberated use of symbol rather than more limited narrative notion of emblem. To consider this work at all involves thinking about a way to stand in relation to the use of images both rooted in and somewhat distanced from cultural seeing. -

The show, Field Guide (until 25 February 2018), which Burke co-organised with the museum’s director of programmes and chief curator, Sandra Guimarães, demonstrates some of the museum’s priorities, such as showing works by a mix of Canadian and international artists, acting as an “artist-centred” institution and being a champion for work by contemporary indigenous artists. Field Guide shows pieces from the collection (many of which come from the city’s former Mendel Art Gallery, closed in 2015), new acquisitions, site-specific commissions and loaned works by 80 artists and collectives, including John Baldessari, Kader Attia and Hito Steyerl. -

The Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg was founded in 2004 in memory of the eponymous American photographer and museum curator (born in 1879 in Bivange, Luxembourg) with the aim to stimulate the dialogue between the artistic scenes of Europe and the United States – a dialogue that Steichen himself helped to initiate at the outset of the 20th century. This biennial prize, which is awarded by an international jury to an artist from Luxembourg or the Greater Region, rewards its winner with a six-month residency in New York in the framework of the prestigious International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP). -

Saskatoon, SK, Canada (June 26, 2017) – Canada’s museum of modern art, Remai Modern, will open to the public October 21, 2017 in Saskatoon. The launch aligns with the international trend of world-class museums opening in unexpected destinations. The inaugural exhibition, Field Guide, curated by Executive Director & CEO, Gregory Burke, and Director of Programs & Chief Curator, Sandra Guimarães, will animate the entire building. Selected works from the museum’s collection will be displayed in dialogue with contemporary projects, commissions and installations by international and Canadian artists. Upon opening, Remai Modern will be an artist-centred institution that raises questions, inspires discussion, and enables transformative experiences among both local and global audiences. 1 Field Guide is not a thematic exhibition but rather a series of singular positions and coherent groupings of works that introduce Remai Modern’s program philosophy and direction, providing an open framework that invites consideration of a network of issues and questions impacting art and society today. “The concept for Field Guide emerges from a set of questions we asked ourselves during the establishment of Remai Modern, including: What is modern?
