What Killed Australian Cinema & Why is the Bloody Corpse Still Moving? A Thesis Submitted By Jacob Zvi for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Health, Arts & Design, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne © Jacob Zvi 2019 Swinburne University of Technology All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal. Friction I debates Australian cinema vs. Australian audience, rejecting Australian cinema’s output, resulting in Frictions II and III, which respectively debate two industry questions: what content is produced? arthouse vs.

  • Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia
Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia PhD Thesis 2007 Andrew King BA (Hons) Supervisor: Associate Professor Alan McKee Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology Abstract By means of a historical analysis of representations, this thesis argues that an increasing sexualisation of Indigenous personalities in popular culture contributes to the reconciliation of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australia. It considers how sexualised images and narratives of Indigenous people, as they are produced across a range of film, television, advertising, sport and pornographic texts, are connected to a broader politics of liberty and justice in the present postmodern and postcolonial context. By addressing this objective the thesis will identify and evaluate the significance of ‘banal’ or everyday representations of Aboriginal sexuality, which may range from advertising images of kissing, television soap episodes of weddings, sultry film romances through to more evocatively oiled-up representations of the pin- up-calendar variety. This project seeks to explore how such images offer possibilities for creating informal narratives of reconciliation, and engendering understandings of Aboriginality in the media beyond predominant academic concerns for exceptional or fatalistic versions. i Keywords Aboriginality Indigenous Marriageability Reconciliation Popular Culture Sexuality Relationships Interracial Public Sphere Mediasphere Celebrity ii Table of Contents Introduction ………………………………………………………………………….

  • Paul Hogan to Be Awarded Australia's Highest Screen Accolade
MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 6 December 2016 Paul Hogan to be awarded Australia’s highest screen accolade The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced Australian screen icon Paul Hogan AM as this year’s recipient of the prestigious AACTA Longford Lyell Award. First presented in 1968, the Longford Lyell Award honours Australian film pioneer Raymond Longford and his partner in filmmaking and life, Lottie Lyell. The Award is the highest honour that the Australian Academy can bestow upon an individual and recognises a person who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Australia’s screen environment and culture. In honour of his outstanding contribution to the Australian screen industry, the Longford Lyell Award will be presented to Paul Hogan at the 6th AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel in Sydney on Wednesday 7 December 2016, televised on Channel 7 at 8.30pm. The presentation will celebrate and honour Paul’s 45 year career, and will feature tributes from Shane Jacobson, Michael Caton, former Tourism Minister John Brown, Peter Faiman, Dave Hughes, Adam Hills, Ernie Dingo and THE PAUL HOGAN SHOW co-star Delvene Delaney. HONOURING PAUL HOGAN Paul Hogan’s career began when he was working as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, on a dare, auditioned on talent contest NEW FACES. Following a recurring role on A CURRENT AFFAIR in the early 1970’s, THE PAUL HOGAN SHOW was born – a hugely popular sketch comedy program which he produced, co-wrote and starred in from 1973 to 1984. He became well known internationally for his work on commercials in the 1980’s, including British advertisements for Foster’s Lager and his unparalleled ‘Come and say G’Day’ campaign with the Australian Tourist Commission, which sky-rocketed Australia to a must-see destination and which coined the iconic phrase “I’ll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you.” In 1985, Paul was awarded Australian of the Year and inducted into the Order of Australia for service to tourism and entertainment.

[ only] Unit 3 The globalising world (1945–the present) Popular culture Popular culture includes a wide range of activities that a large number of people in a society engage in. Since World War II, Australia has developed strong industries in four key areas of popular culture: music, film, television and sport. Television and rock’n’roll music both arrived in 1956 and have had a strong influence on all groups within Australian society – this continues today. Sport has retained an important role in Australian life and has become closely tied to our sense of identity. The Australian film industry has also emerged to tell uniquely Australian stories that entertain and inform. While British, American and, more recently, European and Asian cultures have influenced us, Australia has developed its own distinct culture. Music, film, television and sport have not only become ways of reflecting who we are, but have also enabled Australia to engage with the rest of the world. chapter Source 1 ‘Hello possums’ – one of Australia’s many contributions to international popular13 culture is Barrie Humphries as Dame Edna Everage. 13A 13B 13C How did developments in How have the music, filmDRAFT and What contributions has popular culture influence Australia television industries in Australia Australia made to international Insert obook assess logo: after World War II? changed since World War II? popular culture? Eleanor M. Huntington A Land for Animals, a Space for Children: The Landscape in Australian Family Films Abstract In the most successful family films produced and directed by Australians in the last two decades, the Australian landscape and animals’ roles in such spaces instruct young viewers how to navigate life in a postcolonial and explicitly multicultural nation. Through close textual readings of Babe, Happy Feet, and Red Dog, coupled with an analysis of official Australian government policy, this paper argues that the main animal characters deconstruct the paternal/colonial Anglo-Celtic dominance through their interactions with their landscapes.
