Every summer, hundreds of children come to Switzerland to learn, travel, meet new friends, and explore the Alps. Faculty and staff from around the world take a break from their academic year jobs and university courses to act as teachers, counselors, advisors, and dorm parents. The sun-drenched campus becomes a home-away-from-home for the people who make up the TASIS Summer Programs. Summer is a special time at TASIS. Academics are intensive, as students focus on core subjects from languages to the arts. The enviable locations of the TASIS campuses allow 6 students to explore beautiful, interesting, and historic places, giving hands-on experience in their target academic field. This summer edition of eTASIS Today is filled with images and stories from all of the TASIS Summer Programs based in Switzerland, and we hope it captures the spirit of these brief but dynamic weeks. Along with a round-up of the Summer Programs, we’ve included some campus news. We hope you enjoy this e-publication. This e-publication rests on our website, and its format allows us to send it directly to your email address. Some alumni and TASIS friends will not receive this in their inbox, however, since we are still missing the email addresses of many alumni.

  • TASIS TODAY Fall 2014
TASIS TODAY Fall 2014 A Magazine for Alumni and Friends of The American School In Switzerland The new high-tech Campo Science Center in the heart of the campus From the Chairman Dear Alumni and Friends of TASIS, As the years speed by, it is good to reflect on the highlights of the year since our last TASIS Today. A century after the beginning of World War I, the world again seems to be slipping out of control, with the various horrors perpetrated by human beings on other human beings. In the affluent West, many seem to be losing their moral compass, and even the awareness of a moral universe—or agreement on what is right and what is wrong. 2 At TASIS we try to keep a steady hand on the rudder of our moral vessel to maintain an ethical, professional environment, a climate of mutual respect and human concern, where young people can learn and grow in a safe and inspiring setting and strengthen their God-given, fundamental judgment in differentiating right from wrong, good from evil, true from false, worthy from valueless. As my mother, Mrs. Fleming, often said, “Times change, values don’t.” So many good things are happening at TASIS, summer and winter. Surrounded by beauty, our students, from the youngest of 4 to the oldest of 18, are immersed in a truly loving and caring environment where they have numerous opportunities to learn and grow in wisdom and goodness, have life-enhancing experiences, and make long-lasting friendships, as so many of our alumni know.

Raising Global Citizens Together THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TRUST AND TRADITION Bem-Vindos! Welcome! Your Child at TASIS Portugal TASIS Portugal is the newest campus in the TASIS family of schools, founded in Switzerland in 1956 by fearless educator and entrepreneur M. Crist Fleming, and fully financially supported by the nonprofit TASIS Foundation. Our longstanding traditions, combined with a genuine love of children and their unique qualities, make TASIS Portugal a beautiful place for your child to grow, play, and learn. TASIS Switzerland was the first American boarding school in Europe, and all TASIS schools maintain the tenets on which it was founded: culture, wisdom, truth, and knowledge; represented by the tower, the lamp, the sun, and the book. Culture Our students are surrounded with beauty, both natural and manmade, to help them appreciate the value of beauty and culture in their lives and reflect it in their hearts and spirits. Wisdom At TASIS, wisdom means a strong mind, a strong body, and strong principles. To us, wisdom is just as much of the heart as of the mind. Truth A TASIS education promotes personal integrity and ethical development, steeped in a belief in academic excellence and the values of Western civilization. Knowledge Through play and learning, and the commitment of its faculty, TASIS encourages students to honor knowledge and become lifelong learners. At TASIS Portugal, we raise caring, curious, competent global citizens in partnership with parents. I invite you to discover more about our special community with a visit to our campus. Keith Chicquen, Headmaster 1 A WORLD CLASS EDUCATION ON A BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS Where some saw an empty shopping center, the TASIS Foundation saw opportunity.
