GREYHOUND COMMITMENT: THE FIRST YEAR This week, GBGB launched its first annual update on the Greyhound Commitment, setting out the progress that has been made since its introduction last year. Over the past year, we have been establishing the Commitment as the manifesto for how our sport needs to be run to ensure greyhound welfare remains at its heart. It is the blueprint we are expecting everyone across the industry to be following to ensure that welfare standards are as high as they possibly can be for all greyhounds – from registration to retirement. It has been encouraging to see the widespread adoption of the Commitment and we would like to thank everyone who has actively got behind it. As you will see from the Update, a great deal has been achieved over the past year, from the new Animal Care and Welfare Assistant Apprenticeship to the launch of our national Injury Recovery Scheme. But, for the Commitment to be successful long term, it requires the continued support of the whole industry to ensure the initiatives being introduced have a tangible impact on welfare and integrity standards. As part the Update, we are also publishing the injury and retirement figures for 2018. This independently-verified data demonstrates that licensed greyhound racing in Great Britain has the lowest injury and fatality rates in the sport anywhere in the world. The data is very similar to that of last year giving us further consistent evidence as to where our sport currently is and where it needs to do more. To this end, we have announced targets to further improve these figures with the aim of eradicating avoidable and unacceptable deaths to ensure that all greyhounds leaving the sport have a long and happy retirement wherever possible. To achieve these targets, the Greyhound Commitment contains a number of existing and future initiatives to support trainers and owners. We believe that these will go a long way to helping the sport meet the challenge. Whilst much has been achieved in recent months, there is still much more to be done. Thank you all again for your support as together we deliver a sport that is safe, welfare-driven and run with outstanding integrity.
