  • 1 Second Field School in Ivano-Frankivsk
Second Field School in Ivano-Frankivsk REPORT: The Second Field School Ivano-Frankivsk Region, Ukraine July 21-August 10, 2010 Prepared by Dr. Maria Kaspina, Dr. Boris Khaimovich & Dr. Vladimir Levin Not a single taxi driver in Ivano-Frankivsk knows where the synagogue is located, although its massive building stands only 50 meters away from the central square bustling with people at its shops and restaurants. The once vibrant Jewish community of Eastern Galicia, numbering half a million people, was not only eradicated by the Nazis and their supporters during the Holocaust, but it has also faded from the memory of local inhabitants. The aim of our field school and the entire Jewish History in Galicia and Bukovina project is to document, collect and revive remnants - physical as well as intangible - that can still be recorded, preserved and revived after 65 years of Jewish absence from the region. Towards this aim, the Second Field School arrived at Ivano-Frankivsk (formerly Stanisławów) during the summer of 2010. The Second Field School in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region took place from July 21 to August 10, 2010. It was organized by the Jewish History in Galicia and Bukovina project and the Moscow 1 Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization Sefer. Fifteen students under the guidance of five scholars engaged in the documentation of Jewish history. The school was composed of three teams: one documenting Jewish cemeteries, another recording oral history and ethnographical materials from the local residents and the third team surveying towns and villages in the region. The complex approach applied towards the remnants of Jewish history allows for exploration in the fullest possible way.

  • Reading the History of Bastion Castles in Galicia (Eastern Europe) Using the Friedrich Von Mieg Map
This paper is part of the Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Defence Sites: Heritage and Future (DSHF 2016) www.witconferences.com Reading the history of bastion castles in Galicia (Eastern Europe) using the Friedrich von Mieg map O. Tikhonova Faculty of Architecture, Lisbon Technical University, Portugal Abstract The purpose of this research is to show the usefulness of cartographic materials in research, namely cadaster maps; in particular for studying landscape architecture, settlements planning, and localization of military objects on the territory. Primary attention in this paper is paid to Map of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria as a part of cadaster maps made in the First Military Survey in 1763–1787 by Officer Friedrich von Mieg. The maps are serviceable for studying military architecture because the author, Friedrich von Mieg, gave particular attention to locating military objects during the map’s creation. The author of the research used this map to establish the position of bastion castles and their quantity in the territory of Galicia (the historical and geographic region in Eastern Europe). The nucleus of historical Galicia lies within the modern parts of Poland (Lesser Voivodeship, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, and Silesian Voivodeship) and western part of Ukraine (Lviv, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk region). At the end, the researcher has defined 39 bastion castles on the territory understudying. Besides, the scholar has found 40 unspecified castles that need further investigation because it was hard to identify exactly their type using the map. These results will help the author undertake deeper research about the history and fate of these castles.

Następnie zamieszczono nazwy według państw i terytoriów.

  • CHANGES in MARKET SQUARES of HISTORICAL CITIES and TOWNS of UKRAINE in the 20Th CENTURY
CHANGES IN MARKET SQUARES OF HISTORICAL CITIES AND TOWNS OF UKRAINE IN THE 20th CENTURY Oleh Rybchynskyi National University “Lviv Polytechnic”, Lviv, Ukraine Market square of a city or town is a spatial frame where the notion of lower middle class was formed and in which memorial events took place. Due to the tragic events of the 20th century – the First and Second World Wars, Holodomor (famine) and Holocaust, emigration and moving of peoples, destructions and distortions of town space – market squares have become a certain mythological construct. After the damages of the First World War the market squares were restored and were actively functioning. In the second half of the 20th century, most market squares were completely destroyed. Distortions of the market squares resulted in the disappearance of urban patriotism and deformation of town resident’s identity. Keywords: market squares, historical town, spatial symbol, architectural monument, town resident’s identity.

Distribution of Pucciniastrum symphyti (Pucciniales) in Ukraine. Ukr. Bot. J., 2018, 75(5): 441–445. Abstract. Epiphytotic development of the rust fungus Pucciniastrum symphyti was recorded in May 2016 near Myropil town (Zhytomyr Region, Romaniv District, Ukraine) on Symphytum cordatum. In Ukraine P. symphyti was reported on S. cordatum, S. officinale, and only once on S. microcalyx. Most records are confined to the west of the country and the dates of collections generally vary from late spring to early summer. We found P. symphyti at the easternmost edge of the range of S. cordatum. Despite a wide distribution of S. officinale throughout the country, P. symphyti was not recorded in Ukraine on this species for more than 80 years. Hitherto, the fungus was reported for Europe, the Caucasus and Asia Minor. Due to systemic infection, P. symphyti can overwinter in rhizomes of comfrey and therefore does not need aecial host plants for its reproduction. However, the general range of P. symphyti does not follow the geographical pattern of the Symphytum species richness, since there are only few its records in the diversity centre of this genus, but mainly reflects the distribution of its aecial host, Abies alba.
