Even with the best winter boots, it can be challenging to walk in winter. Be cautious when walking on icy surfaces, and follow these recommendations to stay safe: • Wear appropriate footwear – Your footwear should place the AND WELLNESS AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible treads. If you prefer to wear shoes that aren’t suitable for snow and ice conditions, carry them with you and change after you’re indoors. • Use footwear traction devices whenever possible – Even the best pair of winter boots doesn’t provide adequate traction on ice. • Expect ice – Be cautious of thin ice that looks like wet pavement (black ice). Often snow and ice will melt with warmer temperatures during the day then refreeze in the afternoon and evening. HEALTH HEALTH • Plan ahead – While walking on snow or ice on sidewalks and in parking lots, walk consciously and take short steps. Instead of looking directly down, look slightly ahead and see where your feet will move next to anticipate slippery surfaces. • Use the penguin walk technique! 1. Walk flat footed with toes outward, and bend your knees slightly. 2. Take short steps or shuffle your feet for stability. 3. Keep your hands out of your pockets and your arms free for improved balance. 4. Still not sure how to penguin walk? Click here. [https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=LHaWGibGwyk] • Be careful when exiting your vehicle – When your vehicle’s heater is on the soles of your shoes or boots may become very warm. The moment you place your feet on the ground, the ice will melt slightly resulting in an extremely slippery surface. Remember, parking lots are usually icy, even when they’ve been cleared, so appropriate winter footwear and winter traction devices are a must! • Look for the best path of travel – Quicker routes are a good idea if you’re in a hurry but might be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may not be maintained and, as a result, be more dangerous. • Use your eyes and ears – Keep your eyes and ears on the path you are traveling and avoid the temptation to walk distracted. • Travel up and down steps slowly – When walking down steps, be sure to grip handrails firmly and place your feet securely on each step. They may appear wet but actually be covered with thin ice. • Watch out for transitions in walking surfaces – When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. • Observe your surroundings – Be careful what you are walking under. Injuries can result from falling snow and ice as it blows, melts, or falls from rooftops and awnings. • Enter buildings carefully – When you get to your destination, be sure to check the floor as you enter the building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice.

Longmont Community Memorial Project Longmont Senior Services staff recognizes that the pandemic has impacted people’s ability to memorialize lost loved ones in many ways. Also, the pandemic has disproportionately affected older adults in our community. We have a variety of digital and print opportunities available for memorialization. Our hope is that this project creates ways for the

Both sites are IRS sponsored and are staffed by fully trained and certified volunteers who can prepare Colorado state and federal income tax returns. • TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) is an AARP sponsored program that focuses on those who are 60 and older and disabled persons. • VITA provides tax returns for those with income up to $54,000.

TCE site at the Longmont Senior Center IRS and AARP sponsored volunteers are planning a new low-contact model to provide free COMMUNITY income tax preparation and e-filing for low-to moderate income residents, senior citizens, and disabled taxpayers. This will likely involve scanning your tax documents at an appointed time while you wait, with volunteers preparing your tax return off-site. Tax returns by appointment. You can make an appointment on-line at http://cotaxaide.org or for a recorded message including general information and appointment requests, you may call 303-774-4429. Make your appointment early as appointment times fill up quickly. If you have broker statements (1099B or K-1) we recommend that you request a March appointment to allow time for the receipt of those statements. When you call, please leave your name and a phone number where we can reach you. Appointments for Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Avenue January 21 (begin taking appointment requests for Income Tax preparation) Dates and times for appointments TBD

*** ‘If you had an appointment that was cancelled due to the onset of the pandemic, NEWS you will be receiving an email or a call prior to January 21st to reschedule if needed. In addition, AARP will provide contact-free alternatives including free self-preparation with or without remote assistance from an AARP TaxAide volunteer. The contact-free alternatives will also be available in case the COVID-19 situation changes and we are no longer able to provide the low-contact appointment service.

Longmont VITA Re-opening VITA sites provide free income tax preparation for most taxpayers making less than $60,000 per year. Last year, the Longmont VITA site closed early due to COVID-19. For 2021, Longmont VITA will again be open with some changes to our normal procedures to stay safe with both the flu and COVID-19 out there. Rather than having people wait at the site to have their taxes done, we will do a short in-person interview with each client and then scan in their paperwork and prepare each return remotely. When the paperwork is scanned, we will set up a follow-up appointment within 7 days to review the return and obtain permission to e-file. To maximize the safety of our volunteers and other clients, we are not allowing children into the site. All taxpayers will be required to wear a mask, and to pass a temperature check. In addition, taxpayers will be asked to wait in their cars rather than our lobby, as it would be impossible to maintain social distancing with the small space we have. We will provide full details of site procedures on our website, longmontvita.org, by the end of December. Hours when you can come in and go through the intake process will remain the same: Saturdays 9:00am–1:00pm | Wednesdays & Thursdays 6:00–8:30pm | Open January 30–April 10, 2021 VITA Longmont site 2050 Terry Street, Suite 101 (please do not disturb other building occupants)
