Masonic Bursary Presentation to Algonquin College From left to right: Laura Stanbra, Vice President, Student Services; Christina Miller, President, Algonquin College Students’ Association; R.W. Bro. Allen Wright, District Deputy Grand Master – Ottawa District 1; Cheryl Jensen, President, Algonquin College; R.W. Bro. Ron Campbell, Past President and Local Representative, Masonic Foundation of Ontario; W. Bro. Ed Ben, District Chair - Ottawa District 2 - Masonic Foundation of Ontario; W. Bro. Rob Uhrig, District Chair - Ottawa District 1 - Masonic Foundation of Ontario; R.W. Bro. Jeffrey Barrie, District Deputy Grand Master – Ottawa District 2; and Brenda Rothwell, Executive Director, Algonquin College Foundation.

The first charitable initiative of the Masonic Foundation of Ontario, instituted in 1965, was the presentation of University bursaries (non-repayable grants) to students who would be unable to continue their education without financial assistance. Students attending Community Colleges were included in 1971. Those eligible to apply for bursaries were full-time students in the final term of a two- or three-year program, or the final term of years three or four of a four-year program who had exhausted all other forms of revenue. Over the years, however, other sources of financial assistance became available to students, including grants from other sources and the Ontario Student Assistance Program (O.S.A.P.), which lessened the demand placed on the Masonic Foundation. In 2012, the Foundation Directors decided to discontinue the Bursary Programme in its original forma, after forty-six years, during which bursaries totalling over $2.5 million had been granted to assist approximately 3,600 students. Students, however, still require financial assistance; therefore, the Foundation instituted a new program in 2012, establishing a $25,000 Endowment Bursary Fund in each of the community colleges across the Province. The onus was placed on supporting Community Colleges, as the vast majority of universities in Ontario are well- established with a stronger alumni base and larger financial aid resources. This program is being funded at the rate of $100,000 per year for five years. Each year four colleges are being geographically selected until a Masonic Foundation of Ontario Endowed Bursary Fund exists and is operating in every Community College within the Province, thus providing full exposure and equal opportunity for all. These funds will provide bursaries in perpetuity to assist needy students achieve their educational goals. The photograph depicts the presentation of the Endowment cheque to Algonquin College.

Valentine’s Charity Ball

“For over a decade, the masons of the two Ottawa districts have gathered on or around Valentine's Day for an evening of merriment, and in support of one of our greatest principles -- charity.

On February 14, 2015, the 11th Annual Valentine's Charity Ball (VCB 11) brought together over 300 masons, spouses, friends and members of the public at the Centurion Conference and Event Centre in support of three important causes: Epilepsy Ottawa (district charity for Ottawa District 1), the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (district charity for Ottawa District 2), and Roger's House (long-time charity of choice for VCB).

The evening was filled with great company, great food, great music (provided by local legends the Mick Armitage Band), and of course, great generosity. With a very extensive and diverse silent auction, VCB raised a total of $11,250, which, when donated through the Masonic Foundation of Ontario, resulted in a donation to each of the three charities of $4,125.

VCB 12 is already set for February 13, 2016. We hope to see you there.”

Class of 2000 Masters Group Table Lodge 2015 04 25

Since 2002, the Masters of 2000-2001, known as “The Class of 2000”, from Ottawa District One, have held an annual Table Lodge in order to raise funds for both cancer research and the purchasing of needed equipment for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, located at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus). Over a 14-year period, the annual Table Lodge has turned into one of the events of the year in Ottawa District One.

Tickets to the dinner are limited to only 90 participants and it has proven to be a sell-out every year for 14 years. The “Class of 2000” Masters are proud to have raised in excess of $60,000.00 for cancer research and the purchasing of equipment for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre over the fourteen year period. Non-masons are also welcome to attend; therefore, the dinner serves as an unofficial Friend-to-Friend event.

The “Class of 2000”, who also prepare the meal, underwrites the entire cost of the dinner itself. In this way, absolutely all proceeds from the door, as well as the money collected during the course of the evening, goes directly to the Cancer Centre.

25

Unfortunately, over the past 14 years, the “Class of 2000” has lost three members who passed to the Grand Lodge above. These Masters are represented by other Past Masters from their Lodge in order to keep their memory alive and to keep Table Lodge attendance active in their respective lodges. Wives and friends also assist with the preparation and serving of the meal.

The 2015 Table Lodge was held on Saturday, 25 April, at the Westboro Masonic Temple on Churchill Avenue in Ottawa, Ontario. In the course of the evening, a total of approximately $6,100.00 was raised.
