Hope in the Midst of Chaos Hope in the Midst of Chaos Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, Hope in the Midst of Chaos and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. Hope in the Midst of Chaos He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Hope in the Midst of Chaos As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Hope in the Midst of Chaos Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. Tiberius, the Emperor of Rome. Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Judea
VIPs The Second Sunday of Advent Luke 3:1-7 Tiberius, the Emperor of Rome. Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea. Herod, the ruler of Galilee. Philip, ruler of Ituraea and Trachonitis. Lysanias, ruler of Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas, high priests of Jerusalem. If we’re honest, it’s hard to care about who was in charge of what in the first century, especially when those names read like extraneous details—a kind of prelude to the rest of the story. To our brothers and sisters of the first century, our indifference would have been nothing short of unfathomable. To them, those men are the story. As emperor, Tiberius is the one whom everyone worships, a sort of demigod of peace and prosperity. Pontius Pilate’s clout and authority stems from his world as the emperor’s envoy in Judea. Herod, Philip, and Lysanias are Pilate’s local emissaries, and therefore they are also held in high esteem. Lastly, Annas and Caiaphas are the ones to whom Jews in the region followed and trusted for matters spiritual and practical. Together, these 7 men are the ones everyone expects to be be inked into the annals of history and carved into the porticos of temples and marketplaces. That John the Baptist is the one we remember most today would have been nothing short of offensive to them. John doesn’t have the blue-blood lineage or socially esteemed position of the others. What he has is a reputation for endless bad hair days and dinners of dried, crusty bugs. On top of that, much of his adulthood has been spent in the barren and lifeless wilderness— a place of low expectations, A place most people avoid, a place where God often seems silent. -

Special attention is given to the text with regard to its political, cultural, religious, and geographical setting, the literary genre, and the intended meaning of the text in its original cultural and literary context. Meets general studies core requirements for God’s Word and the Christian Response. Prerequisite: BIBL 100: Exodus/Deuteronomy or instructor’s approval COURSE PURPOSE This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the New Testament books of Luke and Acts as they were written in their cultural, historical, political, and religious setting. Completion of BIBL100 (Exodus/Deuteronomy) or the approval of the instructor is required. The course is structured to help students first gain a comprehensive theological perspective of these two New Testament books and then acquire skills for interpreting specific texts as the course progresses. LUKE Week 1 - Day 1: Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples. Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write an accurate account for you, most honorable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught. 1. How might this change the way we live? -------------------------------- LUKE Week 1 - Day 2: It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him! The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth. -

Faith, Freedom and Radical Individualism in Late Modern America: A Missiological Evaluation Doctoral Dissertation Mentor: Wilbert R. Shenk Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Intercultural Studies By William Dale Bjoraker, 2007 Excerpts of the Dissertation, with an added brief Introduction Introduction Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple, Inc., and his associates have shrewdly understood the spirit of late modern America—a spirit of radical individualism—by marketing many of their products using the prefix “i.” The popular “iMac,” “iphone,” “ipod,” “iTunes,” “iBookstore,” and most recently the “ipad” tablet computer in our contemporary society symbolize our individualistic values and social structure. For Apple, Inc., the “ i ” stands for “Internet.” I suggest the “i” stands for individualism. The title of a Beatles song— “I, Me, Mine” —captures the notion well. Increasingly, we are living in the “iworld.” Marketing strategies seek to appeal to consumer desire, so what sells tells much about the consumer’s values. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Jeep, Inc. rolled out a new ad, a spin-off of Descartes’ famous “I think, therefore I am.” The Jeep ad runs with the tagline “I live, I ride, I am.” The message? Your or my existence is based on having the money to buy a $40,000 Jeep vehicle and ride freely down the highway. One customer is known to have said, “I bought the Jeep Cherokee because I like the way I feel about myself when I ride in one.” When such a tagline sells, it confirms materialism and individual freedom (at least the experience and sensation of it) as core American values.
