An Angel Visits Two Families Announcing of the Coming of John the Baptist and Jesus
Scriptures: Luke 1
Key Verse: Luke 1:76-77 “And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Highest: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways: to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins.”
Key Points: 1. Herod is king of Judea at the time. Zechariah is a priest in the temple and his wife’s name is Elizabeth, and they have no’children.
2. An angel named Gabriel appears to Zechariah in the temple and tells him his wife would have a son and his name would be John. Zechariah becomes mute and cannot speak because he doesn’t believe the angel.
3. The angel Gabriel comes to Mary who lived in Nazareth and tells her that she shall have a son and shall call his name Jesus. She is espoused to a man named Joseph.
4. Mary goes to see Elizabeth, her cousin, and stays about 3 months and then returns home
5. Zechariah and Elizabeth’s baby is born and the neighbors and cousins call him after his father, but Elizabeth says “No, his name is John.”
6. Zechariah takes a writing tablet and writes the name “John” and immediately Zechariah could speak again. -
