Guidelines for an Alternative Policy on Migration Based on Human Rights and Solidarity
GUIDELINES FOR AN ALTERNATIVE POLICY ON MIGRATION BASED ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOLIDARITY GUE/NGL MEPs reject the EU’s repressive approach to immigration. We believe Europe has a historical duty to develop a comprehensive and reasonable migration policy that guarantees human rights. GUE/NGL has long opposed the construction of ‘fortress Europe’ and has worked at the forefront of the No-Fortress Europe campaign to highlight the positive aspects of immigration and put forward policies based on the free movement of individuals which promote human rights. Together with NGOs, GUE/NGL MEPs have repeatedly expressed concerns about how much of the EU budget has been used to strengthen the EU’s external borders, whether now through an increased budget for border control in the Internal Security Fund, border surveillance systems like EUROSUR or Smart borders, return or FRONTEX. GUE/NGL MEPs remain committed to oppose any EU budget that would not be in line with the following guidelines: 1. Setting up a massive and robust proactive multinational rescue operation in the Mediterranean at the height of the humanitarian drama unfolding in the Mediterranean, including boats stationed on the high seas. 2. Stopping any military intervention aiming to target the boats and the smugglers. 3. Opening safe and legal access for migrants and asylum-seekers, including the use of humanitarian visas and resettlement for asylum-seekers. 4. Member states to facilitate family reunification beyond the nuclear family of both beneficiaries of international protection and migrants present in the territory of an EU member state. 5. Increased cooperation with UN actors and member states in full compliance with international law, including on Maritime Search and Rescue, non-refoulement, international protection, fundamental rights, the rights of the child and the right to family life as well as ECHR court judgements.

POLICY PAPER European issues n°420 European Parliament: 7th February 2017 redistribution of political balance Charles de Marcilly François Frigot At the mid-term of the 8th legislature, the European Parliament, in office since the elections of May 2014, is implementing a traditional “distribution” of posts of responsibility. Article 19 of the internal regulation stipulates that the Chairs of the parliamentary committees, the Deputy-Chairs, as well as the questeurs, hold their mandates for a renewable 2 and a-half year period. Moreover, internal elections within the political groups have supported their Chairs, whilst we note that there has been some slight rebalancing in terms of the coordinators’ posts. Although Italian citizens draw specific attention with the two main candidates in the battle for the top post, we should note other appointments if we are to understand the careful balance between nationalities, political groups and individual experience of the European members of Parliament. 8 marzo 2020 Caro Presidente Sassoli, Ti scriviamo per esprimere la nostra profonda preoccupazione per la diffusione della malattia infettiva causata dal coronavirus COVID-19 in Europa e per richiedere ulte- riori misure di sicurezza per salvaguardare i Membri del Parlamento europeo, il per- sonale e la popolazione locale. Come ben sai, il livello di emergenza legato alla diffusione di questo virus è note- volmente aumentato nel corso delle ultime ore: il numero di casi confermati si sta moltiplicando in molti Stati membri, compreso il Belgio, e sono state confermate nuove aree di contagio. Misure di sicurezza straordinarie sono state adottate dalle autorità pubbliche di tutta Europa e intere aree sono state messe in quarantena. Il numero di casi confermati è in costante aumento in Belgio e a Bruxelles e questa settimana abbiamo riscontrato i primi casi di nuovi coronavirus nelle istituzioni del- l'UE. Sebbene apprezziamo che siano già state adottate misure straordinarie per far fron- te a questa emergenza, riteniamo che la situazione in rapida evoluzione e i maggiori rischi per la salute richiedano ulteriori misure di sicurezza come l'immediata interru- zione di tutti i lavori parlamentari, compresa la prossima sessione plenaria, come misura precauzionale. Il Parlamento europeo, con oltre 5000 persone che vi lavorano e viaggiano regolar- mente tra la loro città natale e Bruxelles, ha il potenziale per diventare un focolaio di trasmissione del coronavirus. Launch of the European alliance for a Green Recovery Press Release Under embargo until 14/04 7:00am At the initiative of Pascal Canfin, Chair of the Environment Committee at the European Parliament, 180 political decision-makers, business leaders, trade unions, NGOs, and think tanks have come together to form a European alliance for a Green Recovery. In the face of the coronavirus crisis, the biggest challenge Europe has faced in peacetime, with devastating consequences and a shock to the economy tougher than the 2008 crisis, Ministers from 11 countries, 79 cross-party MEPs from 17 Member States, 37 CEOs, 28 business associations representing 10 different sectors, trade union confederation representing members from 90 national trade union organisations and 10 trade union federations, 7 NGOs and 6 think tanks, have committed to working together to create, support and implement solutions to prepare our economies for the world of tomorrow. This first pan-European call for mobilisation on post-crisis green investment packages will work to build the recovery and transformation plans which enshrine the fight against climate change and biodiversity as a key pillar of the economic strategy. Sharing the belief that the economic recovery will only come with massive investments to protect and create jobs and to support all companies, regions and sectors that have suffered from the economy coming to a sudden halt, the alliance commits to contribute to the post-crisis investment decisions needed to reboot and reboost our economy. Covid-19 will not make climate change and nature degradation go away. The fight against this crisis will not be won without a solid economic response.

Im Juli 2015 verließ der Parteigründer Bernd Lucke die einstige „Anti-Euro-Partei“ aufgrund eines massiven Rechtsrucks – und die seitdem stattfindende Entwicklung gibt ihm recht. Das Auftreten der Partei hat sich erst zöger- lich, dann aber mit aller Macht grundlegend gewandelt. Mit aggressiven Parolen gegen Geflüchtete und den Islam setzt die neue Parteiführung auf gezielte Provokation. Getra- gen wird dies auch von einer neuen Parteibasis, die seit 2013 deutliche Veränderungen durchgemacht hat. In Auftreten und Sprache inszenieren sich die AfD gerne als Vertreter des „kleinen Mannes“. Ein großes Pfund für die Partei ist die Abstiegsangst großer Teile der Mittelschicht und der Geringverdiener.
