MEMORIES OF THE PARISH OF ST. JAMES

TheTh e WaWay We Were …. “Memories, light the cornersco rn er of my mind ……”

So ggoesoe the title song from the 1973 hit movie that starredst ar re d Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. Our memoriesme mo are an integral part of our lives, and often becomebe co me morem or e so asa s titimeme marmarchesch es on. Our llovedov ed oneso ne s liveli ve oon in our memories, continuing to shape our lives longlo ng aftera ft er theyt he y haveha ve movmoveded on frfromom tthishi s life to ththee nenext.

And so, we ask the question …what are the memories of St. James Parish that light the corners of your mind? Were you married here, have you raised your children here, watching them receive their sacraments, perhaps in the same church where you or your spouse received your sacraments ? Were you a member of the parish when the current church building was being constructed and Sunday Mass was held elsewhere? Maybe you have some old photographs lying around that show the old sanctuary or grounds, that will give parishioners a different perspective. The experiences and memories are as varied as the people who have walked through our doors …. what holds special meaning to you and/or your family?

Our parish has served as the spiritual home for thousands of families during the past seventy years and, recognizing the importance of preserving the past as we move into the future, we invite parishioners of all ages to join us in our mission to create a journal of “The Way We Were ” to be published at a yet to be determined date.

We hope you will participate in this fun, parish -wide, family friendly venture by sharing your thoughts, memories and photos. Please send all submissions and/or questions to bulletin editor Catherine Horgan at: [email protected] . We look forward to hearing from you!

New Series from the Holy Father: “Rejoice and be Glad!”

Pope Francis ’s apostolic exhortation, Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today ’s World , was released last year. In his message to the faithful the Holy Father speaks of God ’s call to witness and live out the love of Christ in one ’s own way and to see the entirety of one ’s life as part of the building of God ’s kingdom. We hope these weekly excerpts will help each of us discern how God is asking us to keep the light of Christ burning brightly in our time on earth .

In Constant Prayer (continued)

Let me ask you: Are there moments when you place yourself quietly in the Lord ’s presence, when you calmly spend time with him, when you bask in his gaze? Do you let his fire inflame your heart? Unless you let him warm you more and more with his love and tenderness, you will not catch on fire. How then will you be able to set the hearts of others on fire by your words and witness? [¶ 151] Prayer, because it is nourished by the gift of God present and at work in our lives, must always be marked by remembrance. God wished to enter history, and so our prayer is interwoven with memories. We think back not only on his revealed Word, but also on our own lives, the lives of others, and all that the Lord has done in his Church. Think of your own history when you pray, and there you will find much mercy. It makes sense to ask him to shed light on the smallest details of your life, for he sees them all. [¶ 153]. Prayer of supplication is an expression of a heart that trusts in God and realizes that of itself it can do nothing. A prayer of petition so often calms our hearts and helps us persevere in hope. Prayer of intercession has a particular value, for it is both an act of trust in God and an expression of love for our neighbor. [¶ 154] Finally, if we realize that God exists, we cannot help but worship him at times in quiet wonder and praise him in song. Love pauses, contemplates the mystery, and enjoys it in silence. [¶ 155] The prayerful reading of God ’s word, which is ‘sweeter than honey ” (Psalm 119:103), yet a “two -edged sword ” (Heb 4:12), enables us to pause and listen to the voice of the Master. As the bishops of India have reminded us, “devotion to the word of God is not simply one of many devotions. It goes to the very heart and identity of Christian life. The word has the power to transform lives. ” [¶ 156]

Meeting Jesus in the Scriptures leads us to the Eucharist, where the living word is truly present. When we receive the Lord in Holy Communion, we renew our covenant with him and allow him to carry out ever more fully his work of transforming our lives. [¶ 157]

Military Sees Conflicts Over First Amendment Freedoms An increasing number of military members are discovering their own rights to free speech and religious expression are being curtailed within the very institution whose primary purpose is to protect those same rights for the rest of us. * A Bible was recently returned to a Missing Man table at a Veterans Hospital in New Hampshire. It had been removed following a complaint from the anti -religion Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) founded by atheist attorney Mikey Weinstein. * Airmen at the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota were under attack by MRFF at Christmas for volunteering to help the Salvation Army hand out baskets of food and gifts to families in need. * MRFF is calling for an investigation of the commander of Edwards Air Force Base in CA for his private website, Prayer at Lunchtime for the United States, that is designed to "encourage Bible - believing Americans to take time to specifically pray for our nation at lunchtime every day."
