Work While it is Daylight

Richard Haas

he stories of Jesus’ miracles have always meant something to me. Being in healthcare, the subject of physical healing is relevant to my daily life. The story that especially catches my attention is found in T the book of John, chapter 9 (NIV). Verses 1-7 read: As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, I must do the work of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” [Siloam means “sent”]. So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.”

JESUS ANSWERS I am intrigued by many points in this story, including trying to imagine what it would be like to be born blind—never knowing what colors are and how they defy description. I am also curious about the question posed by the disciples, “who sinned?” which demonstrates a legal- ism to which I cannot relate! And the spit with mud—is there a science behind this, or was it all about faith and obedience? Other blind people were healed without spit and dirt, so it makes me think it must have been about obedience. The part that seems to have the deepest impact on me, particularly now, during these challenging times, is what Jesus said in answer to the disciples’ question: “But this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, I must do the work of Him who sent me” (verse 3). Though times are unsettled and nerves are jittery, we can know that the medical work we have been asked to do is still God’s work and one of our highest priorities. It strikes me that Jesus came to this world to get an important mes- sage across, that God is love. He spent only three years in this ministry, and a great deal of His time was devoted to physical healing! Ellen White referred to health ministry as the “right arm” of the gospel, and at Grandview Medical Center and throughout the entire Kettering Adventist HealthCare (KAHC) network in the Dayton, Ohio, area, we take that work very seriously. We know that everything we do impacts the lives of peo- ple and their families. On the following pages, you will read about a recent charitable surgery given to a Croatian man, restoring his ability to support his family. In our news, you will see that KAHC continues to be ranked by employees as one of the best places to work in Dayton—three years in a row! We believe that our mission and commit- ment to excellence is what creates a strong sense of unity and purpose for employees. Please join us in this ministry by praying for our patients and their fam- ilies; that we will give them improved lives and show His love.

In Genesis 22, God asks Abraham to sacrifice his own son, and though his heart was break- ing at the thought, Abraham readied himself to follow God’s command. That Abraham heard God’s voice, and knew it was His voice—and not the deceiver’s—is amazing to me. I want to be so connected to God that even when the request goes against everything I know Him to stand for, I will know it is Him and will follow His request. God says in Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:11-13, NIV). Knowing the voice of God comes through an intimate connection to Him. It comes when I search for Him with all my heart. Let’s covenant together to spend whatever Dunbar Henri time is necessary with our Father so when He calls we will know His voice and answer. Principal
