Abstract The paper concerns the tectonics of the mountain range between Vorarlberg (Austria) and Grisons (Switzerland): The Sulzfluh is the most prominent peak on it. Since the orientation structure of joints has been shown as of significance with regard to the tectonics of an area, joint orientations have been measured on outcrops of the aforementioned range. These were then related to the tectonics of the area. It was shown that the joint orientations are more or less oriented NS and EW, and therewith the principal stresses NE-SW and NW-SE. This fits exactly with the conditions found generally in Europe. 1. ISSN 02hl 7-li\s 92i;!jW; /:) 04 W^r J'i 2000 Late Jurassic to Eocene Palaeogeography and Geodynamic Evolution of the Eastern Alps PETER FAUPL1 & MICHAEL WAGREICH1 4 Figures and 1 Table Abstract The Mesozoic orogeny of the Eastern Alps is controlled by subduction, collision and closure of two oceanic domains of the Western Tethyan realm: The Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous closure of a Triassic Tethys Ocean, probably connected to the Vardar Ocean in the Hellenides, and the Mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary closure of the Penninic Ocean to the north of the Austroalpine unit. Based on facies analysis and provenance studies, the evolution of the major palaeogeographic domains is discussed. Ophiolitic detritus gives insights into the history of active margins and collisional events. Synorogenic sediments within the Northern Calcaerous Alps from the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous onwards record shortening within the Austroalpine domain, due to suturing in the south and the onset of subduction of the Penninic Ocean in the north. Transtension following Mid-Cretaceous compression led to the subsidence of Late Cretaceous Gosau Basins. Tectonic erosion of the accretionary structure at the leading margin of the Austroalpine plate resulted in deformation and deepening within the Northern Calcareous Alps. Cretaceous to Early Tertiary deep-water deposition ended in a final stage of compression, a consequence of the closure of the Penninic Ocean. Introduction troalpine zone is subdivided into a Lower, Middle and Upper Austroalpine nappe complex.

Erdwiss. Komm. 14: 11-56, 6 Figs., 1 Tab., Wien. Abstract: The evolution of the tectonic units of the Eastern Alps of Austria during the Paleogene is summarized. Based on the structural, petrological, geochronological, and sedimentological-strati graphic data, a plate tectonic-geodynamic interpretation of the evolution of the Eastern Alps of Austria during the Paleogene is deduced. The starting-point of this evolution is the consolidation of the Austroalpine nappe complex and subsequent cooling of the Austroalpine unit du ring the Late Cretaceous. During the Late Cretaceous and the Paleogene subduction of the Penninic oceanic domains and the subsequent collision between the Penninic continental and the Austroalpine units is documented. The latter were in an upper plate position. The orogeny during the Paleogene is primarily controlled by subduction, collision and closure of the Penninic oceanic domains. This is indicated by the deposition of turbiditic sediments both on top of the Austroalpine upper nappe complex (Gosau sediment basins), and on the Penninic-European lower plate (Matrei Zone, Kaserer Group?, Rhenodanubian Flysch). Collision is followed by cessation of flysch sedimentation, and the deposition of Molasse sediments, which started in the Late Eocene. Contemporaneously, subduc tion and collision is documented by high-pressure metamorphism in the internal zones of the Eastern Alps, which affected the Middle- and Southpenninic units, and by Late Oligocene magma tism along the Periadriatic Lineament, which resulted from the break off of the subducted slab of Penninic oceanic lithosphere.

The Brianc¸onnais which formerly belonged to the Iberian plate, was located on the northern margin of the Alpine Tethys (Liguro-Pie´mont ocean) since its opening in the early-Middle Jurassic. Together with the Iberian plate the Brianc¸onnais terrane was separated from the European plate in the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, following the northern Atlantic, Bay of Biscay, Valais ocean opening. This was accompanied by the onset of subduction along the northern margin of Adria and the closure of the Alpine Tethys. Stratigraphic and metamorphic data regarding this subduction and the geohistory of the Brianc¸onnais allows the scenario of subduction–obduction processes during the Late Cretaceous–early Tertiary in the eastern and western Alps to be specified. HP–LT metamorphism record a long-lasting history of oceanic subduction-accretion, followed in the Middle Eocene by the incorporation of the Brianc¸onnais as an exotic terrane into the accretionary prism. Middle to Late Eocene cooling ages of the Brianc¸onnais basement and the presence of pelagic, anorogenic sedimentation lasting until the Middle Eocene on the Brianc¸onnais preclude any sort of collision before that time between this domain and the active Adria margin or the Helvetic margin.

This metamorphic overprint is attributed to the orogenic Switzerland) the different tectonic elements of the Arosa zone metamorphic processes during the Late Cretaceous.
