The Alanbrooke Library – Sale Spring 2019 P a g e | 2 Introduction

The items listed below are from the library of Alan Francis Brooke, later Field Marshal and Viscount Alanbrooke and his family. The library contains various book that initially belonged to other members of Alanbrooke’s family, such as his father, older brother and son (all ‘Victor Brooke’), his wife Benita Blanche Brooke, nee Pelly; and other members of her family (Pelly, Poore, Lees). Where the provenance is clear; it has been mentioned in the description of each item. Alanbrooke took over as Chief of Imperial General Staff or CIGS in 1941. From this point forward, he remained the head of the imperial forces during the entire second world war and was the primary military adviser to Winston Churchill. In the eyes of many, Alanbrooke was an outstanding military strategist and played an important role in defining the military strategy that eventually led to the victory of the allied forces. The American General Douglas MacArthur in his book ‘Reminiscences’ called Alanbrooke ‘England leading soldier’ and ‘the finest strategic mind I had as yet encountered during or after the war’ (MacArthur, 1964). This is a selection from roughly 400 books from this library. After his death in 1963 these books were boxed up and remained in storage (at times unsuitable) until 2018. As a result of the long storage period some of the volumes are damp stained / damaged. The condition of each book is clearly described. This selection does not consist of military books only; it follows the entire life and professional career of the Alan Francis Brooke, from his childhood, his early military career in Britain, Ireland and India, WW1 and his career before WW2; resulting in his appointment as Chief of Imperial Military Staff (CIGS). Another important aspect of Field Marshal Alanbrooke’s life was his love of nature and his interest in Ornithology. Although Alanbrooke’s father died in 1891 when Alan was only seven years old, he seems to have inherited many of his father’s interests and passions. A keen hunter and fisherman throughout his life, he later developed a strong interest in bird watching and photography, interests he pursued, even during the busiest times of WW2, when bird watching and the study of ornithological books became a balance to his work as CIGS. During the later years of WW2 Alanbrooke met David Bannerman and the two often met for dinner and to discuss birds. After the war Alanbrooke wrote the foreword to Bannerman and Lodge’s ‘Birds of Great Britain’. After his retirement from the military in 1946; Alanbrooke was free to pursue his interests further. Peter Scott, founder of the Severn Wildfowl Trust (now Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) convinced him to become the first President of this organization. Other roles, such as Vice President of the Society for the Protection of Birds and President of the Zoological Society of London followed. Alanbrooke remained an avid ornithologist to his death in 1963. Some of the books document his various honorary positions (Lord Constable of London, Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, Board Member of Anglo-Iranian Oil (BP) etc. Alanbrooke died in 1963. The Alanbrooke Library – Sale Spring 2019 P a g e | 3 I am not a highly religious individual according to many people’s outlook. I am however convinced that there is a God all powerful looking after the destiny of this world. I had little doubt about this before the war started, but this war has convinced me more than ever of this truth. Again and again during the last 6 years I have seen His guiding hand controlling and guiding the destiny of this world toward that final and definite destiny which He has ordained. The suffering and agony of war in my mind must exist to gradually educate us to the fundamental law of ‘loving our neighbour as ourselves’. When that lesson has been learned, then war will cease to exist. We are however many centuries from such a state of affairs. Many more wars, and much suffering is required before we finally learn our lesson. However humanity in this world is still young, there are still many millions of years to run during which high perfection will be attained. For the present we can do no more than go on striving to improve more friendly relations towards those that surround us. (Field Marshal Alanbrooke: War Diary 8 May VE Day (Victory-Europe))

(quoted from Danchev and Todman, 2001).

Books by Rudyard Kipling No other author appears in Alanbrooke’s library as often as Rudyard Kipling. More than forty books by and about Kipling can be found amongst the books he left behind, however, many of these were not originally owned by Alanbrooke. While some copies carry Alan Brooke’s signature; others belonged to his brother Victor Brooke, his father in law Harold Pelly, as well as Thomas Evans Keith Lees, the first husband of his wife Benita. The heart of his ‘Kipling Collection’ is the 24 uniformly bound volumes shown here as item 14 below. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865 – 1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He was born in India, which inspired much of his work. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Provenance: From the Library of Sir Alan Francis Brooke, Field Marshal Alanbrooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (not signed / no Ex Libris). This collection consists of 24 uniformly bound books, however, there are 20 volumes published by Macmillan and four volumes published by Methuen (mainly poetry). The four Methuen volumes are slightly smaller, compared to the MacMillan books, however, the bindings by J.&E. Bumpus in Oxford Street, London are identical. According to Quaritch Catalog 60 (Bindings and Illustrated Books): 'Bumpus enjoyed a reputation for handsome bindings in classical styles from its foundation in 1780 until the 20th century. In fact, the 'bindery' never produced a single binding, instead outsourcing to the likes of Rivière, and Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a masterpiece of delegation.'

The Dardanelles is a narrow, natural strait and internationally-significant waterway in north western Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. During World War I, British and colonial forces attacked the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915, seeking to secure a route to relieve their eastern ally, Russia. The Ottomans set up defensive fortifications along the peninsula and the attackers were eventually repulsed. Total Allied deaths included 43,000 British, 15,000 French, 8,700 Australians, 2,700 New Zealanders, 1,370 Indians and 49 Newfoundlanders. Total Turkish deaths were around 60,000. Alan Brooke's second wife, Benita was widow to Thomas Lees, 2nd Baronet (1886-1915), who was killed during WW1 at Gallipoli.

Herr Hitler has made a decree that everyone must prove 'Aryan descent'. Al British nationals who have married into German families have to produce the pedigree back to 1800 and show that they were baptized. In cases where the British element is a generation or so back it involves great hardship as many people do not know much about their ancestry. Unless these pedigrees are produced to show non-Jewish blood, the families of those concerned are debarred from all professions, etc. Failure to produce these pedigrees has had most unfortunate results, many suicides having been reported, even with the probability of there being no Jewish blood traceable.'

As Chief of Imperial General Staff (CIGS) and top military advisor to Winston Churchill, Brooke was the functional head of the British Army, and as chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, which he dominated by force of intellect and personality, he took the leading military part in the overall strategic direction of the British war effort. Brooke's focus was primarily on the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. Here, his key issues were to rid North Africa of Axis forces and knock Italy out of the war, thereby opening up the Mediterranean for Allied shipping, and then mount the cross-channel invasion when the Allies were ready and the Germans sufficiently weakened. This strategy also led to the defeat of Rommel's forces in North Africa.

The Alanbrooke Library – Sale Spring 2019 P a g e | 59 The Alanbrooke Diaries

Brooke kept a diary during the whole of the Second World War. Originally intended for his wife, Benita, the diaries were later expanded on by Brooke in the 1950s. They contain descriptions on the day-to-day running of the British war effort, Brooke's thoughts on strategy, as well as frequent anecdotes from the many meetings he had with the Allied leadership during the war. The diaries have become famous mostly because of the frequent remarks on and criticisms of Churchill. Although the diaries contain passages expressing admiration of Churchill, they also served as a vent for Brooke's frustration with working with the Prime Minister. The diaries also give sharp opinions on several of the top Allied leaders. The American generals Eisenhower and Marshall, for example, are described as poor strategists and Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander as unintelligent. Among the few individuals of whom Brooke seems to have kept consistently positive opinions, from a military standpoint, were General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Field Marshal Sir John Dill, and Joseph Stalin. Brooke admired Stalin for his quick brain and grasp of military strategy. Otherwise he had no illusions about the man, describing Stalin thus: "He has got an unpleasantly cold, crafty, dead face, and whenever I look at him I can imagine his sending off people to their doom without ever turning a hair." Edited by the distinguished historian Sir Arthur Bryant, the diaries were first released (in abridged versions) during 1957 (The Turn of the Tide) and 1959 (Triumph in the West). Originally the diaries were never meant to be published. One reason why Alanbrooke (as he had become) changed his mind was the lack of credit to him and the Chiefs of Staff in Churchill's own war memoirs, which essentially presented their ideas and innovations as the Prime Minister's own. Although censorship and libel laws accounted for numerous suppressions of what Alan Brooke had originally written concerning persons who were still alive, the books became controversial even in their truncated state. This was not only as a result of the many comments on Churchill and others, but also because they launched the idea of Brooke as being, ultimately, the sole commander behind the Allies' victory.

Churchill himself did not appreciate the books. In 2001 the publication of the uncensored War Diaries, edited by Alex Danchev and Daniel Todman, again attracted attention to one of the most influential strategists of the Second World War.

Robert Henry Winborne Welch Jr. (1899 - 1985) was an American businessman, political activist, and author. He was independently wealthy following his retirement and used that wealth to sponsor anti-Communist causes. He co-founded the conservative group the John Birch Society (JBS) in 1958 and tightly controlled it until his death. He became a highly controversial target of criticism by liberals, as well as some conservatives. Republican criticism of the John Birch Society intensified after Welch circulated a letter calling President Dwight D. Eisenhower a possible "conscious, dedicated agent of the Communist Conspiracy". Welch went further in a book titled The Politician, written in 1956 and privately printed, rather than by the JBS, for Welch in 1963. It was his personal "fact-finding" mission and was not part of the materials or the formal beliefs of the JBS. Welch claimed President Franklin D. Roosevelt had known about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in advance but said nothing because he wanted to get the U.S. into the war. The book spawned much debate in the 1960s over whether the author really intended to call Eisenhower a Communist.

The Alanbrooke Library – Sale Spring 2019 P a g e | 81 Books on Natural Science and Ornithology ‘Throughout my life I have always held it as essential to cultivate some engrossing interest beside one’s profession, to which one could turn for refreshment and rest whenever the exigencies of one’s work admitted. In war the value of such a habit becomes more evident than ever. I sometimes doubt whether I should have retained my sanity through those long years of the last world war had I not had an interest capable of temporarily absorbing my thoughts, and of obliterating the war, even if only for short spells when circumstances permitted. … In ornithology and in nature generally I had formed just such an interest and I cannot describe its value better than by quoting the words which Viscount Grey had written in connection with the First World War in his Fallodon Papers: “In those dark days I found some support in the steady progress unchanged of the beauty of the seasons. Every year, as spring came back unfailing and unfaltering, the leaves came out with the same tender green, the birds sang, the flowers came up and opened, and I felt that a great power of Nature for beauty was not affected by the War. It was like a great sanctuary into which we could go and find refuge for a time from even the greatest trouble of the world, finding there not enervating ease, but something which gave optimism, confidence and security.’ (Field Marshal Alanbrooke, quoted from Danchev and Todman, 2001).
