Rahn THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 5, 2003 If the federal government suddenly announced it had acquired the New York Times and now was going to force taxpayers to subsidize it, how would you react? Furthermore, assume you were told they would keep the same left-leaning editorial personnel and practices. Most Americans would be justifiably outraged because they would understand they were being forced to pay for political propaganda they may disagree with; that the government-subsidized paper had an unfair advantage over its private sector competitors; and that the paper could be used by political authorities for their own advantage. In fact, these same arguments are equally valid against the government-owned Corporation for Public Broadcasting and its subsidiary, National Public Radio (NPR). NPR has a well-known and documented left-wing political bias with views almost identical to that of the New York Times. NPR has a strong advantage over its private sector competitors because it receives the government subsidy and tax-deductible, private contributions to its operations. Advocates for NPR often claim conservatives have more talk radio hosts with bigger audiences so, even if NPR has a leftist bias, it is not a danger. However, there is a fundamental difference. If you do not like Rush Limbaugh, you can boycott his sponsors by not buying their products. If you do not like NPR and try to boycott its sponsor (the federal government) by withholding your taxes, you can be sent to jail.

    THE FIRST FORTY YEARS INTRODUCTION by Susan Stamberg Shiny little platters. Not even five inches across. How could they possibly contain the soundtrack of four decades? How could the phone calls, the encounters, the danger, the desperation, the exhilaration and big, big laughs from two score years be compressed onto a handful of CDs? If you’ve lived with NPR, as so many of us have for so many years, you’ll be astonished at how many of these reports and conversations and reveries you remember—or how many come back to you (like familiar songs) after hearing just a few seconds of sound. And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ve missed—loyal as you are, you were too busy that day, or too distracted, or out of town, or giving birth (guess that falls under the “too distracted” category). Many of you have integrated NPR into your daily lives; you feel personally connected with it. NPR has gotten you through some fairly dramatic moments. Not just important historical events, but personal moments as well. I’ve been told that a woman’s terror during a CAT scan was tamed by the voice of Ira Flatow on Science Friday being piped into the dreaded scanner tube. So much of life is here. War, from the horrors of Vietnam to the brutalities that evanescent medium—they came to life, then disappeared. Now, of Iraq.     General Manager's Newsletter | May 2021 Happy Trails, indeed! The Mountain West News Bureau’s series/podcast “Across the Great Divide” received the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize. Reporter Nate Hegyi was the traveler/reporter who biked into towns all over the west to report on how they were faring during the pandemic. WPM was the recipient of the Pulitzer Grant for Reporting Initiatives for its Modern West podcast, “Pandemics in Indian Country: From European Contact To COVID- 19.” This three-part series will follow the history of pandemics and how they impacted Indigenous communities as European colonizers pushed inland. Producer Melodie Edwards will take on the role of producer and editor, working with Indigenous reporters and re-enactors to tell the story. Another successful Fund Drive ended, with incredible support from our members. Thank you for staying the course with us. Early response and sustaining members started us off on the right footing and brought us to the brink of success by April 10. Then 4 days of on-air pledging capped it off to meet our goal. As always, Pet Wednesday was phenomenal, and you were indeed awesome! In today’s politically polarized environment, WPM seeks out opportunities of balance, moderation, and discussion. The Munk Debates, airing Wednesday at 7 pm. is one example. WPM’s I Respectfully Disagree series is another. This month I Respectfully Disagree addresses the pros and cons of wind projects, focusing on the Rail Tie Wind Project in Albany County. Residents have been wrangling with a hard decision about whether to approve the project a few miles south of Laramie.

Today is May 15, 2008. We're in Washington, D.C. And I have the honor and privilege to be interviewing Dan Schorr for the Richard Nixon Oral History Program. Hello, Mr. Schorr. Thank you for doing this. Daniel Schorr My pleasure. Timothy Naftali Tell us about your recollections of Richard Nixon as a congressman. Daniel Schorr Well, when he was a member of a committee of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the House led by Chris Herter. And they made a tour of Europe to see how the Marshall Plan was working.
