www.planbee.com Jacques Cousteau was a French explorer and naturalist. He spent his life exploring and learning about life underwater.

Aqualungs allow divers to breatheunderwater. He built lots of special , boats and , which he used to explore underwaterenvironments. Jacques made hundreds of underwater films which showed people amazing plants and animals they had never seen before. Sylvia is an AmericanMarine Biologist. She has spent her life exploring undersea environments. Sylvia has held world records for deep-sea diving. She lived and worked in Tektite II, an underwater laboratory! Sylvia has helped design undersea robots. She teaches people about the importance of the sea and everything that lives in it. Would you like to be naturalists, like Jacques and Sylvia? There are five oceans. The f i v e o c e a n s : f a c t s The Arctic Ocean is in the North. The Southern Ocean is in the South. The water is cold, and partly covered in sea ice. The Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean all have warmer water. The oceans are deep in the middle and shallow near the coast. The oceans have smaller areas within them called seas. The largest of the five oceans is the Pacific Ocean. The Caribbean Sea is in the Atlantic Ocean. It is surrounded by the coasts of Central America, South America and lots of islands.

Is the water in the Caribbean Sea warm or cold? Where is the water shallow? Where is it deep?

www.planbee.com Sylvia Earle and Jacques Cousteau have both spent lots of time exploring the shallow waters around the Caribbean Sea. They learned lots about the coral reefs found around many of the islands.

Do you know what a coral is?

www.planbee.com Coral reefs are undersea habitats where lots of plants and animals live.

www.planbee.com Coral reefs are made up of millions of coral! Coral are not plants -they are a type of animal which grows very slowly.

L o t s of p l a n t s and a n i m a l s c a n l i v e in c o r a l r e e f s b e c a u s e :

The water is warm. The water is shallow, so lots of sunlight gets down to thereef. The water is rapid-moving; the goes in and out, bringing fresh water into the reef. Plants and animals like this.

www.planbee.com What a lot of information! How much have you remembered? Today we will be finding out more about the world’s oceans.
