SEARS2 1Education Department, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville, Alabama, USA 2History Department, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville, Alabama, USA Set during the Cold War and space race, this historical role-play focuses on Wernher von Braun’s involvement in and culpability for the use of slave laborers to produce V-2 rockets for Nazi Germany. Students will grapple with two central questions. Should von Braun have been allowed to emigrate to the United States given his affiliation with the Nazis and use of slave laborers? Should the U.S. government and military have put Braun in powerful positions in NASA and military programs? This activity encourages students to hone their critical thinking skills as they consider and debate a complex, multi-layered historical scenario. Students also have opportunity to articulate persuasive arguments either for or against von Braun. Each character sketch includes basic information, but additional references are included for teachers and students who want a more in depth background. Abstracts for the Annual SECAC Meeting in Columbus, Ohio October 25th-28th, 2017 Conference Chair, Aaron Petten, Columbus College of Art & Design Emma Abercrombie, SCAD Savannah The Millennial and the Millennial Female: Amalia Ulman and ORLAN This paper focuses on Amalia Ulman’s digital performance Excellences and Perfections and places it within the theoretical framework of ORLAN’s surgical performance series The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Ulman’s performance occurred over a twenty-one week period on the artist’s Instagram page. She posted a total of 184 photographs over twenty-one weeks. When viewed in their entirety and in relation to one another, the photographs reveal a narrative that can be separated into three distinct episodes in which Ulman performs three different female Instagram archetypes through the use of selfies and common Instagram image tropes. This paper pushes beyond the casual connection that has been suggested, but not explored, by art historians between the two artists and takes the comparison to task. Issues of postmodern identity are explored as they relate to the Internet culture of the 1990s when ORLAN began her surgery series and within the digital landscape of the Web 2.0 age that Ulman works in, where Instagram is the site of her performance and the selfie is a medium of choice. Abercrombie situates Ulman’s “image-body” performance within the critical framework of feminist performance practice, using the postmodern performance of ORLAN as a point of departure. J. »50 Jahre Mondlandung« mit Apollo-Astronaut gefeiert und der VDI war mit dabei Am 29. und 30. Mai 2019 fanden vor großem Publikum die Feierlichkeiten des 50jährigen Jubiläums der ersten bemannten Mondlandung in einzigartiger Kulisse im Technik Museum Speyer statt. Ein besonderer Ehrengast war der Apollo 16-Astronaut und »Moonwalker« Charles Duke. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DGLR) veranstaltete am 29. Mai 2019 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) und dem Technik Museum Speyer ein ganztägiges Fachsymposium mit dem Titel »First Moon Landing« in der beeindruckenden Kulisse Europas größter Raumfahrtausstellung »Apollo and Beyond«. 250 Fachbesucher nahmen an der mit »hochkarätigen« Referenten und Gästen aus der Raumfahrtbranche besetzten Fachveranstaltung teil. Die Referenten kamen aus den verschiedensten Bereichen der deutschen, europäischen, russischen und amerikanischen Raumfahrt. Gäste waren beispielsweise die deutschen Astronauten Reinhold Ewald, Matthias Maurer, Ulf Merbold, Ernst Messerschmid und Ulrich Walter. Der besondere Ehrengast war der trotz seiner 83 Jahre junggebliebene US-Astronaut Charles Duke, der als so genannter »Capcom«“ (Capsule Communicator) bei der ersten bemannten Mondlandung von Apollo 11 fungierte und später selbst als 10. und jüngster Mensch auf dem Mond mit Apollo 16 landete. The engine has 4 stages and one of the more challenging stages to in- crease performance is the first stage, the ejector stage. One proposed method to increase performance is by achieving higher entrainment performance and mixing at low free-stream velocities. The Exchange Inlet is used as an alternative nozzle to achieve this performance. The Exchange Inlet is compared to a conical nozzle within a RBCC engine with computational fluid dynamics at various pressures. The mixing and entrainment properties are compared between the two engine configurations and additional cases are investigated with shorter mixing sections to further investigate these properties. The New American Space Age: A Progress Report on Human Spaceflight Lately, it seems the public cannot get enough of space! The recent hit movie “Gravity” not only won 7 Academy Awards – it was a runaway box office success, no doubt inspiring young future scientists, engineers and mathematicians just as “2001: A Space Odyssey” did more than 40 years ago. “Cosmos,” a PBS series on the origins of the universe from the 1980s, has been updated to include the latest discoveries – and funded by a major television network in primetime. And let’s not forget the terrific online videos of science experiments from former International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield that were viewed by millions of people online. Clearly, the American public is eager to carry the torch of space exploration again. Thankfully, NASA and the space industry are building a host of new vehicles that will do just that. American industry is hard at work developing new commercial transportation services to suborbital altitudes and even low Earth orbit. NASA and the space industry are also building vehicles to take astronauts beyond low Earth orbit for the first time since the Apollo program. Meanwhile, in the U.S. National Lab on the space station, unprecedented research in zero-g is paving the way for Earth breakthroughs in genetics, gerontology, new vaccines and much more. -

Annual Summary of Reserve Management Needs For the 2021 Collaborative Research RFP Compiled October 2020 Collaborative research projects supported by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Science Collaborative must address a management need of one or more reserves. This document is a compilation of the current management needs within NOAA’s reserve system. Management needs are submitted by reserve managers and updated on an annual basis. This reserve management needs summary supports the development of proposals in response to the 2021 NERRS Science Collaborative Request for Proposals. Potential applicants are encouraged to review the management needs described here and reach out to the point of contact listed for a reserve to discuss the reserve’s current needs and opportunities for collaboration. Project ideas that emerge after this document was developed and do not align perfectly with a specific management need statement, including project ideas that engage multiple reserves, can be considered for funding if the relevance and value to the reserve system and potential end users are well justified in the proposal. Science Collaborative focus areas and reserve management needs reflect both NOAA and reserve priorities set forth in the NERRS strategic plan (climate change, water quality and habitat protection) as well as individual reserve management needs at the local level. Science Collaborative Focus Areas: These management needs are consistent with one or several of the Science Collaborative focus areas, which are: ● Climate change: Research and monitoring related to biophysical, social, economic, and behavioral impacts of habitat change resulting from climate change and/or coastal development. ● Ecosystem services: Understanding how an ecosystem service approach and human dimensions research can be utilized to support the protection and restoration of estuarine systems. -
