  • Hetwerkvan (Madeby) Discipline: Art Movement Outsider Art
Challenged Art Expo 2015 in Japan hetWerkvan (Madeby) www.hetwerkvan.nl Discipline: art movement Outsider Art About hetWerkvan (Madeby) hetWerkvan is a foundation that aims to promote the art movement Outsider Art. Outsider Art is a contemporary art movement, the artists create because of a personal need and are unique creators. In the case of hetWerkvan we work with and for artists with a disability. We intend to offer these amazing artists and their individual unique artworks a platform. A platform that gives them the opportunity for emancipation and to integrate in society. Day care programs for disabled adults can be more meaningful this way. There are many workshops for artists with a disability. Their professional supervisors support the artists in the creative process of making an artwork. The organisation hetWerkvan, sells art from these workshops. Budgets in healthcare are cut and face limitations, therefor the ateliers are increasingly in need of new funding. The artists supervisor should primarily focus on guidance of the creative process and the education of the artist. However because of their budget responsibility, they have to become more and more commercial. And commerce is not their expertise! The objective of hetWerkvan is to take care of these commercial activities and we intend to support these ateliers and their supervisors in this specific commercial area with expertise and knowledge. hetWerkvan is a foundation with a clear corporate social responsibility (CSR) goal. We buy the art products directly from the workshops and we pay a fair price. Our main interest is to ensure these ateliers to survive and to continue to be a place of growth for their artists.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION of the OUTSIDER ART FAIR PARIS October 19
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE OUTSIDER ART FAIR PARIS October 19 - October 22, 2017 Hôtel du Duc, 22 rue de la Michodière, Paris New York City, July 17, 2017 – The Outsider Art Fair, the one-of-a kind fair dedicated to Self-Taught Art, Art Brut and Outsider Art, is pleased to announce the exhibitor list and programming for its 5th Anniversary Paris edition. OAF Paris will return to Hôtel du Duc, and run from October 19-22, 2017, concurrent with FIAC. The fair will showcase 35 exhibitors representing 22 cities from 8 countries. The Curated Space will be a highlight this year as it pays homage to Daniel Cordier (b. 1920) and his celebrated collection of art brut, of which he donated over 500 works to the Centre Georges Pompidou between 1973 and 1989. In the 1950s, Cordier, who had been a hero of the French Resistance, opened galleries in Paris, Frankfurt and New York, collecting and presenting the works of art brut figures and other major artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Roberto Matta, Jean Tinguely, and Robert Rauschenberg. OAF Paris is pleased to welcome several new exhibitors to the fair in 2017, including Donald Ellis Gallery (New York) who will present an important group of late 19th and early 20th century Plains Indian ledger drawings. The newly opened Outsider Art Museum at the Hermitage Amsterdam, will be displaying works by Willem van Genk in advance of their 2019 retrospective and the return of the artist’s oeuvre to his native land. The dynamic Bourbonnais sisters, Sophie and Agnès, daughters of the late architect and collector of self-taught art Alain Bourbonnais, have recently opened La Fabuloserie Galerie (Paris); they will be displaying works of classic French art brut from their family collection.

In his early years, van Genk used drawing as an escape hatch from his everyday life and a means of "travelling" via imaginary cityscapes. As an adult, he settled in The Hague, where he could finally confront his childhood dreams with reality, in particular on visits to major European capitals. In his drawings, then his paintings on large varnished wooden panels, he began using complex cut-up and collage processes, and was directly inspired by his travels, notably in the former USSR, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Cologne and Prague. Megacities and their characteristic means of transport would become his favourite subjects. While attacking the consumer society and its diktats, van Genk was also a eulogist of modernity and technological advances, in particular as exemplified by such different modes of transport as dirigibles, planes, buses, metros, rockets and satellites. At the same time art, criminality, religion, Communism, classical music and war loomed large in his output. Writing, too, is everywhere present amid a graphic proliferation on the cusp of the comic book: cartouches and speech bubbles allow the artist to make his characters speak, or to voice an opinion of his own.

I am so pleased to introduce the museum’s second Annual Report, which covers fiscal year 2015, July 1, 2014–June 30, 2015. I love serving as the Executive Director for the museum at this exciting time in our history. We have a distinguished board of trustees and a very talented staff, and we have enhanced our capacity to deliver excellent exhibitions, programs, and publications; engaged more visitors from around the world; and provided leadership in the fields of folk art and art by the self-taught. Let me share some great highlights from the year: five major exhibitions, a thirty percent increase in visitors to the museum, the launch of a new and dynamic website, a thirteen percent increase in membership, and we acquired 164 new artworks, compared to thirty-five in the previous fiscal year. In fiscal year 2015 the museum’s permanent collection, library, archives, and administrative offices were consolidated in one space in Long Island City, Queens, called the Collections and Education Center, which is constantly being enhanced.

  • Willem Van Genk
Willem Van Genk Dutch, 20th century. Born 1927, Voorberg; died 2005, the Hague. Willem Van Genk, (1927 - 2005), was born in Voorburg in the Netherlands, the youngest child and only son in a family of ten. His mother died when he was five. He suffered from severe health and behavioral problems. Van Genk started drawing at home and at school, as a substitute for his dreams of travels to distant countries. He was eventually placed in an orphanage, and then a Christian school specializing in arts and crafts. Here, he studied advertising and graphics for two years but proved incapable of adapting to demands made on him. He was transferred to a home for the mentally handicapped in the The Hague, where he received a small salary for his activities in the workshop. With this money, Van Genk bought himself painting materials. His principal sources of inspiration were tourist guides, collected photographs, and, in particular, his voyages to the Soviet Union, Rome Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Cologne, and Prague. Van Genk often portrayed the conflict between good and evil, with God, Lenin, and Mao Zedong facing up the Devil, Hitler, and Stalin. His work appeared in exhibitions but he refused to sell to private collectors. Van Genk gave up painting in 1988. SELECTED EXHIBITIONS 2019 Memory Palaces: Inside the Collection of Audrey B.
