We represent the interests of all Tasmanian clubs and their members throughout the state. Swimming Tasmania promotes swimming as a healthy lifestyle choice and promotes swimming at all levels by encouraging members to enjoy their sport and maximise their potential through participation in quality swimming programs within supportive and friendly club environments. As a not-for-profit organisation, Swimming Tasmania generates its revenue through sponsorships, government grants, membership and events. Income and funding is re-invested back into the sport through special projects, development programs, activities and education, with direct benefits to all members regardless of where they live or which club they belong to. Our vision It is our vision that swimming is one of the premier aquatic sports in Tasmania, demonstrated through growing participation, outstanding performances and commercial sustainability. Our goals As an organisation we exist to: Ensure growth in participation, member recruitment, and greater community engagement; Be respected as a well performing organisation providing quality experiences for its members; Promote development throughout the sport from grassroots participation to performance swimming; Ensure long-term sustainability of the organisation both financially and through the development of our people, clubs, systems and processes; and To align appropriately with Swimming Australia’s strategies for swimming nationally. Our values and behaviours Swimming Tasmania will at all times, and in its dealing with all stakeholders, demonstrate professionalism, act with integrity, respect, openness, fairness and transparency, and promote inclusion and ensure the development and growth of the sport. Swimming Tasmania 2012-13 Annual Report Page | 3 President’s report Susan Cure This is my third annual report as President of Swimming Tasmania covering the period 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2013. The year continued to provide challenges under our partnership arrangement with Swimming Australia Limited (SAL). Jamie McIntyre, our part-time Executive Officer who we share with Surf Life Saving Tasmania, remained the one constant in our office while we said goodbye to both Tara Alcorn and Alex Kingston who moved onto other positions within SAL. We welcomed administration trainee Tom Hancock, who we also share with Surf, and then in March Tim Bingham as our new full-time Community Sport Administrator. I would like to acknowledge the dedication of Jamie, Tim and Tom who have worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the office under sometimes trying circumstances. The planning they have done in the last few months makes the future look very promising. I would like to acknowledge the support of our hard working Board made up of Tim Blair, Ronald Brown, Scott Curran, Julianne Drewitt, Glenise Gale and Stuart James who when required are always prepared to make the hard decisions for the good of our entire sport. I would also like to acknowledge the work done over a number of years by our longest serving member, Russell Goonan, who decided not to stand for re-election at last year’s Annual Meeting. I would also like to recognize the commitment and dedication of our officials who give their time so freely as without you we would not be able to hold our events. We accepted Robert Gregg’s resignation as Chief Referee following his appointment as National Technical Manager and at last year’s Annual Meeting he was awarded for his services with Life Membership of Swimming Tasmania. Sandy Thomson was appointed as our new Chief Referee with Tracey Graham and Scott Lucas as his assistants. Our swimmers continued to break records and this year again has seen some of our oldest records surpassed. Furthermore Jacob Templeton (S13) was selected in the 2013 Bronze Australian National Squad and Trent McLaughlin (S10) and Jacob Vincent in the 2013 Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation National Youth Squad. Finally, I would like to recognize the support of our principal sponsor Fairbrother Pty Ltd and our other Tassie S4L members as well as Sport and Recreation Tasmania and the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Swimming Australia and look forward to further growth and development of our sport in the coming year. Susan Cure President of Swimming Tasmania Swimming Tasmania 2012-13Annual Report Page | 4 Chief Referee’s report Sandy Thomson In January 2013 I accepted the appointment of State Chief Referee for Swimming Tasmania. I wish to thank all involved for their support over my past seventeen years as Chief Referee for the Southern District. I wish to thank Robert Gregg for the support and mentoring he gave me over the years to enable me to accept this position with confidence and I wish him well in his new position as Technical Manager with Swimming Australia Ltd. The summer program went extremely well and this is due to the support from many officials from across the state who gave up their time to assist. It has been my pleasure over many years to work with a band of officials from all over the state who freely give up their time to work for the benefits of our young athletes. Unfortunately, the number of volunteer officials remained steady over the last twelve months with a number of new volunteers from the north of the state showing their keenness. I would like to see more volunteers from both the north and south come forward. Fortunately this situation is now being addressed with the great assistance of Tim Bingham, who I welcome to the team at Swimming Tasmania, and Tracey Graham over the winter months. I hope many of the club parents support the training program and become officials. It is only with this assistance that meets run efficiently and our athletes improve to a level where they are competitive at a national level. The training is not difficult and the rewards are great. It is an excellent way to make many new friends. A recent visitor from Victoria commented on the wonderful friendly environment created by the team of officials. Special thanks go to Scott Lucas, Bevan Knowles, Tracey Graham, and Daryl Jacobs who have so expertly looked after swim meets at a regional level and some state wide

  • Yolane's Star Heads West to Shine Over Arena Swim Club
Yolane’s Star heads west to shine over Arena Swim Club It’s official! Yolane Kukla, gold medallist at the 2012 London Olympics has selected Arena Swim Club as her new home base. Yolane, 17 has relocated from Brisbane to continue training under coach Mick Palfrey who has recently commenced a High Performance Network Program Coaching role with WAIS. Born in Brisbane 29th September 1995, Yolane took up swimming with her sister Gabrielle at the age of 12. She joined St Peters Western Swimming Club, one of the largest swim clubs in Queensland, based at St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly. Prior to swimming, Yolane competed in State representative level gymnastics from 6 – 10 years of age. A butterfly and freestyle swimmer, Yolane’s star rose quickly. She has been a regular on the Australian team since claiming gold and National Titles in 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly at the 2010 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships in Sydney – a performance which earned her selection for the Commonwealth Games team in Delhi. All at the tender age of 14, making her the youngest Australian to qualify for the national team since Ian Thorpe in 1997. Yolane went on to achieve a career highlight claiming gold in Delhi in the 50m Freestyle, 4th in the 50m and 100m fly events…. just 9 days after her 15th birthday. 2010 proved to be a very busy and very successful year for Yolane, with 2 silver medal relay swims, as well as other personal bests achieved at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. You can check out all of Yolane’s PBs here.
