  • “The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

He is widely considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in musical history,[4] [5] [6] and one of the most influential musicians of his era across a range of genres.[7] [8] [9] After initial success in Europe with his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. He often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback.[10] Hendrix, as well as his friend Eric Clapton, popularized use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock which he often used to deliver an exaggerated pitch in his solos, particularly with high bends, complex guitar playing, and use of legato.

The Legend of Jimi Hendrix In 1966, he arrived in London an unknown. A week later, he was a superstar By CHARLES R. CROSS August 11, 2005 Jimi Hendrix took his first footsteps on British soil on Saturday, September 24th, 1966, arriving at Heathrow at nine in the morning. As he walked off the plane, he carried a small bag that contained a change of clothes, his pink plastic hair curlers and a jar of Valderma cream for the acne that still marred his twenty-three-year-old face. These few items, along with his precious guitar, were all he owned. Escorting Jimi was Chas Chandler, formerly the bassist for the Animals, who was launching himself as a manager. Chandler had come upon Jimi in a Greenwich Village club and spilled a milkshake on himself, convinced that Jimi was his ticket to riches. Jimi was penniless at the time, having spent the previous three years as a backup musician on the chitlin circuit. Though Jimi had been born in Seattle, and didn't even begin to play guitar until he was fifteen, by the time Chandler met him he had already toured the nation with countless R&B combos, including Little Richard and the Isley Brothers. In Greenwich Village, fueled by both LSD and Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, Jimi was attempting to re-create himself as a solo act. He was playing to twenty teenagers when Chandler arrived, yet Jimi still only agreed to follow him to England if he promised to introduce him to Eric Clapton. Once in England, Chandler immediately set out to turn Jimi into a star.

  • Through Gypsy Eyes Ben Valkhoff Examines Jimi's Actual Tenure
Jimpress Issue 107 Spring 2016 Street Brook 23 Brook Street – Through Gypsy Eyes Ben Valkhoff examines Jimi's actual tenure February 10th saw the opening of the restored flat at 23 Brook Street in London, advertised as "Jimi Hendrix’s first home in the UK," the place where he lived during 1968 and 1969. But was this really Jimi’s home? And did he really live there for a period of two years, as the plaque on the front of the building suggests? High time for a closer look. Until January 1968 Jimi Hendrix and his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham had lived as a couple at manager Chas Chandler’s house in Upper Berkeley Street. Jimi and his management moved their operation permanently to the U.S. when The Jimi Hendrix Experience started touring in early February of that year, leaving Kathy behind in England. When Chandler quit being Jimi’s manager at the end of the U.S. tour in the spring of 1968 following an argument, he returned to England for good and told Kathy to find herself and Jimi a new place to live. Kathy: “Chas and Jimi had put me in this position and they would just have to pay. I had to have somewhere to live.” For Jimi this would not have been a problem, because from then on he only visited the UK when work demanded it. Being accustomed to living in hotels, a permanent UK home was not necessary for Jimi. Besides, as one of the highest earning artists of his time, finding a temporary place to stay was not an issue for Jimi.
