  • The 'Long Reformation' in Nordic Historical Research
1 The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research Report to be discussed at the 28th Congress of Nordic Historians, Joensuu 14-17 August 2014 2 Preface This report is written by members of a working group called Nordic Reformation History Working Group, that was established as a result of a round table session on the reformation at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Tromsø in Norway in August 2011. The purpose of the report is to form the basis of discussions at a session on “The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research” at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Joensuu in Finland in August 2014. Because of its preliminary character the report must not be circulated or cited. After the congress in Joensuu the authors intend to rework and expand the report into an anthology, so that it can be published by an international press as a contribution from the Nordic Reformation History Working Group to the preparations for the celebration in 2017 of the 500 years jubilee of the beginning of the reformation. • HISTORISK TIDSKRIFT (Sweden)

Missionaries and Changing Views of the Other from the Ninth to the Eleventh Centuries Timothy Mark Barnwell Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Leeds School of History August 2014 The candidate confirms that the work submitted is his own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others. This copy has been supplied on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. The right of Timothy Mark Barnwell to be identified as Author of this work has been asserted by him in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. © 2015 The University of Leeds and Timothy Mark Barnwell ‘Difference and variety are what is right with the world.’ G. K. Chesterton. To the many people who have supported me before, during and after this thesis, thank you. I would not have been able to begin the project without the support of Julia Smith, Stuart Airlie, Rosamond McKitterick and Ian Wood. The whole process was made far more pleasant and intellectually stimulating by the company of Leeds’ early medievalists and the CMRP and T&I groups, as well as a very gracious examination by Julia Barrow and Stuart Airlie. Many errors still remain and, while I am uncertain whether I can be held wholly responsible for all of them, they certainly do not belong to any of these fine people. This thesis explores the varying ways in which otherness was imagined and constructed in two clusters of medieval missionary texts: Rimbert’s Vita Anskarii and Adam of Bremen’s Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum, from the archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen; and Bruno of Querfurt’s Passio Sancti Adalberti episcopi et martyris, Vita vel passio Benedicti et Iohannis sociorumque suorum and Epistola ad Heinricum Regem.

Gustav Adolfs Akademien för svensk folkkultur 4 Abstract Svenska kulturmöten: Föredrag från ett symposium i Uppsala 14–15 mars 2016 (Swedish cultural encounters: Papers from a symposium in Uppsala, 14–15 March 2016). Edited by Lars-Erik Edlund, Anne-Sofie Gräslund & Thomas Lindkvist. Acta Academiae Regiae Gustavi Adolphi 156. Uppsala, 2019. 187 pp. ISSN 0065-0897, ISBN 978-91-87403-34-7. Cultural encounters can be described as both events and processes, and can have different mean- ings for different groups. Studies of such encounters attract the interest of scholars from a range of disciplines. This book brings together eleven papers from an academic meeting in 2016, arranged by the Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy for Swedish Folk Culture. The perspectives applied are longitudinal, and light is shed on both prehistoric and historical conditions and conditions in con- temporary society. The volume includes contributions exploring encounters between ethnic groups that have lived in Scandinavia for a long time, contributions dealing with encounters that have oc- curred and continue to occur when people from other cultures and linguistic areas come to Sweden, and contributions shedding light on what has happened, now and in the past, as Sweden has been integrated into a larger context. Keywords: cultural encounters, Swedish folk culture, Birka, Christianisation of Sweden, cultural encounters between Sami and Scandinavians, cultural encounters between Sami and settlers, Janssonites, musical cultural encounters, Germanic languages, Swedish dialects, French loanwords in Swedish dialects, Swedish multiethnolects, medieval Norwegian letters.

  • Nils Landgren Funk Unit
NILS LANDGREN FUNK UNIT “”in Montreux ACT 9265-2 Release Date in Germany: September, 25 - 1998 There are certain magic moments . The musicians go on stage, count off the first number, and all at once there is that special feeling of excitement in the room that turns a concert evening into an unforgettable experience. Thanks to the intelligence of an experienced producer who had the foresight to turn the tape machine on and then just let it run, this fleeting moment of impulsive, fresh jazz and funk has been captured for our permanent pleasure. Siegfried Loch said of his newest surprise package that, "We had no intention of making a CD from this recording, but the concert was so unbelievable good that we had no other choice." Added Claude Nobs: " There was ABSOLUTE FUNK in the house tonight. " Since 1983, while working in various jazz-rock formations, the Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren has dedicated himself to commingly jazz with soul and rhythm and blues. He formed the Funk Unit in 1992, and began to put his concept into practice. The CD "’Live’ in Stockholm" brought ’s Funk Unit into the fore as an international acclaimed group. The many concert dates following his successful award-winning 1997 C D "Paint it Blue" (ACT 9243-2 ) allowed Nils Landgren and his Funk Unit the playing time needed to make the next step. On July 17th, 1998, Landgren walked self-confidently onto the stage of the Miles Davis Hall as part of the ’s ACT Night; it was the first time in the history of the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival, that artists exclusively from a German label had an evening for themselves to let loose in.
