    Bishop Samuel Seabury and the American Church Sermon preached by Bishop Scott McLaughlin (retired), For Independence Day, Sunday, July 8, AD 2001 Our celebration of Holy Communion this evening is in remembrance of Independence Day, and to the glory of God in honor of Samuel Seabury (November 30, 1729 – February 25, 1796), the first Bishop of the United States. Bishop Seabury’s life has a message for us today, and the week of the 4th of July is a perfect time to reflect upon the history of our Way of Faith on this continent. Before the American Revolution the Church found itself in a very difficult position. In some places, like the Carolinas and Virginia, the Church was established by law, as the State religion. Even if you weren’t a member of the Church, your taxes were spent in support of it, and to pay the salaries of its ministers. We bristle at that kind of thing today (although my tax money is spent in ways I profoundly disagree with), and the situation was not the same in other parts of the continent. People who left the Church of England, and in many cases came to America to escape State Religion settled Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, and other colonies. Those outside the Church did not necessarily believe in religious tolerance, however. The Puritans settled in New England, not because they believed in religious freedom, but because they failed in their attempt to take over the Anglican Church, and immigrated to America in order to enforce their own brand of Christianity on these shores.

Spaulding THE ATTACK ON SOUTH CAROLINA IS AN ATTACK ON ALL MORAL EPISCOPALIANS UNIDENTIFIED DISSIDENTS within the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina submitted “evidence” to the Disciplinary Board of Bishops in September 2011 which they believe shows that their bishop, the Rt. Rev. Mark J. Lawrence, has “abandoned” the Episcopal Church (TEC). Lawrence is cited most notably for presiding over his diocese’s 2009 convention, which voted to “begin withdrawing from all bodies of the Episcopal Church that have assented to actions contrary to Holy Scripture, the doctrine and worship of Christ as this Church has received them, the resolutions of the Lambeth Conference which have expressed the mind of the Communion, the Book of Common Prayer, and our Constitution and Canons, until such bodies show willingness to repent of such actions.” (The primary issue, of course, is the homosexual agenda and, secondarily, abortion.) The charge does have a certain logic, since, if the General Convention, TEC’s highest legislative body, approves the “gay marriage” proposal to be presented to it in 2012 (as is certainly anticipated), South Carolina might be expected to withdraw from that body. But the implication of this action is horrendous: Any discipline of Bishop Lawrence over the issue would indicate that TEC authorities maintain that one cannot be a TEC member in good standing unless he/she endorses, or at least tolerates, sodomy and abortion. And who has the last word in defining the requirements of church membership, other than these very authorities? What of the other Episcopal dioceses that approve of South Carolina’s stand on these moral issues? They are, first of all, the 5 among the 2004-2008 Anglican Communion Network dioceses that, along with South Carolina, did not go into the new Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) in 2009: Albany, Central Florida, Dallas, Rio Grande, and Springfield (IL).

    APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION April 18, A.D. 2017 Apostolic succession is the unbroken line of bishops by the laying on of hands stretching back to the apostles of Jesus Christ. The Orthodox Anglican Church® has always insisted that Apostolic Succession was God’s will for the Church. The Orthodox Anglican Church was organized in the early 1960’s and incorporated on March 6, A.D. 1964. The jurisdiction represented the first noteworthy group of Anglicans departing from the Episcopal Church since 1873. The Apostolic Succession of the current bishops of the Orthodox Anglican Church can simply be traced back to the Anglican succession maintained in the original consecrations of Continuing Anglicans. Departments: Department of Old and New Testament Theology Department of Dogmatic, Historical & Confessional Theology Department of Pastoral Theology Department of Old and New Testament Theology 54 Credits Required Courses: NT 501 General Introduction to the New Testament . This course focuses on issues that relate to the New Testament as a whole. Students survey the background of the New Testament (Judaism, Hellenism, and the Roman Empire, with extensive use of primary sources) as the context for the advent of Christ and the beginnings of the Christian church. The New Testament is also studied as canon to determine how and why the writings were collected and preserved in the early church. In February, 2011, Presiding Minister Phelps formed a Committee of Council for the purpose of studying the possibility of the CREC becoming an ‘Endorsing Agency’ for the purpose of sponsoring men as chaplains in the United States military. The members of the committee are Tom Brainerd, Pastor - Trinity Edgewood, New Mexico, Eric Stoer, RE – Trinity Valparaiso, Florida and Jeremy Sexton, Pastor – Christ Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The committee considers its task to be presentation of a summary of the situation regarding sponsoring chaplains in the military and the recommendation of the path forward if the CREC Council determines that the CREC should endeavor to become an Endorsing Agency. What are the biblical, theological, and historical precedents for house churches? Can there be a complementary union between priestly liturgy and the house church model? And since there were no Western churches using “Western” rites left in communion with the Eastern Church it was natural for the idea to emerge that Orthodoxy was synonymous with the Eastern or Byzantine Rite. The thousand-year usage of Western rites and ceremonies, with the customs pertaining thereto, which existed alongside the Eastern rites when the two Churches were one was almost forgotten. At any rate, Western usages were considered in a suspicious light because they were prac- ticed, from the Orthodox Catholic viewpoint, by schismatics and heretics who had deserted the communion of the Church Catholic.

    1 What Is Orthodox Anglicanism? From a series of sermons delivered by +Scott E. McLaughlin (retired) Part 1 For the past several months we have been preparing to reprint a classic Anglican work entitled Catholic Principles, published in 1902, and written by the Revd Fr. Frank Westcott, a priest of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Fr. Westcott wrote at a time when the Protestant Episcopal Church was thoroughly orthodox in faith and practice: his book was designed to introduce the essential tenets of Anglicanism to those outside of our tradition. Though published nearly one hundred years ago, its message is fresh and new: it contains the best and most succinct treatment I’ve yet seen of the Protestant theory of the Church as contrasted with the Roman Catholic theory of the Church, and both as opposed to the true catholic, that is, the Orthodox Anglican understanding of the Church. The book is one of those rare gems one sometimes finds hidden in the dusty corners of a used bookstore. I thank God that today we have the ability to scan the book by computer and reprint it for another generation of Christians. We plan to use Fr. Westcott’s book as a required text at St. Andrew’s Theological College and Seminary. We are preparing for the first printing now, and I have been asked to write a new Preface for the book, which we plan to entitle The Principles of Orthodox Anglicanism. One of the challenges in writing the Preface to the book is to briefly define “Orthodox Anglicanism.” That may sound strange, considering that we constantly use those terms, but self-definition is a critical and often difficult task.
