  • Preliminary Phylogeny of Diplostephium (Asteraceae): Speciation Rate and Character Evolution

Vargas1,2 and Santiago Madrin˜a´n2 1Section of Integrative Biology and the Plant Resources Center, The University of Texas, 205 W 24th St., Stop CO930, Austin, Texas 78712 U.S.A., email: [email protected] 2Laboratorio de Bota´nica y Sistema´tica Universidad de los Andes, Apartado Ae´reo 4976, Bogota´, D. C., Colombia Abstract: Diplostephium comprises 111 neotropical species that live in high elevation habitats from Costa Rica to Chile. Primarily Andean, the genus seems to have undergone an adaptive radiation indicated by its high number of species, broad morphological variation, and diversification primarily in an ecosystem (pa´ramo) that formed within the last 2–5 my. Internal transcriber spacer (ITS) sequences and several chloroplast markers, rpoB, rpoC1, and psbA-trnH were sequenced in order to infer a preliminary phylogeny of the genus. The chloroplast regions showed no significant variation within the genus. New ITS data were therefore analyzed together with published sequences for generating a topology. Results suggest that Diplostephium and other South American genera comprise a polytomy within which a previously described North American clade is nested. Monophyly of Diplostephium was neither supported nor rejected, but the formation of a main crown clade using different methods of analysis suggests that at least a good portion of the genus is monophyletic. A Shimodaira-Hasegawa test comparing the topology obtained and a constrained one forcing Diplostephium to be monophyletic showed no significant difference between them.

PhytoKeys 174: 13–45. https://doi.org/10.3897/phytokeys.174.59555 Abstract Lobelioideae, the largest subfamily within Campanulaceae, includes 33 genera and approximately1200 species. It is characterized by resupinate flowers with zygomorphic corollas and connate anthers and is widely distributed across the world. The systematics of Lobelioideae has been quite challenging over the years, with different scholars postulating varying theories. To outline major progress and highlight the ex- isting systematic problems in Lobelioideae, we conducted a literature review on this subfamily. Addition- ally, we conducted phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses for Lobelioideae using plastids and internal transcribed spacer regions.

  • THE YOLO GARDENER Spring 2020
THE YOLO GARDENER Spring 2020 A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION BY THE UCCE. MASTER GARDENERS OF YOLO COUNTY Woodland Community College Plant Sale Sue Fitz, UCCE Master Gardener, Yolo County Editors Note: Due to the Corona virus this event may be postponed. Please check our website: https://ucanr.edu/sites/YCMG for updated information. ne of the best kept garden secrets in Yolo County is the spring and fall plant sales at Woodland O Community College. Held the first two Saturday mornings in both April and October, the sales are a joint venture between the College’s horticultural program, the UCCE Master Gardeners of Yolo County, and the horticultural program at Woodland High School. Each group specializes in a particular type of plant, so there is a wide range of plants to choose from. The college mainly concentrates on providing vegetable plants, mostly in four-inch pots. The spring sale offerings are multiple varieties of the usual suspects- tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash and melons, as well as a large selection of herbs, and less common vegetables like tomatillos, okra, pumpkins and gourds. Depending on student interests, they may also offer annual and perennial flowers. UCCE Master Gardeners from Yolo County offer a wide range of drought -tolerant landscape plants in one-gallon pots. Master Gardeners are plant-crazy people, they scour nurseries near and far to find the best and coolest plants to grow for themselves. They then donate cuttings from their gardens for propagation for the plant sale, so you can be sure to find something interesting and rarely seen when you shop.

The Sierra de La Giganta is a semi-arid region in the southern part of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. Traditionally, this area has been excluded as a sector of the Sonoran Desert and has been more often lumped with the dry-tropical Cape Region of southern Baja California peninsula, but this classical concept of the vegetation has not previously been analyzed using formal documentation.

  • Eastern Baccharis Baccharis Halimifolia
COSEWIC Status Report on Eastern Baccharis Baccharis halimifolia in Canada prepared for COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF ENDANGERED WILDLIFE IN CANADA by David Mazerolle and Sean Blaney Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre P.O. Box 6416, Sackville, New Brunswick E4L 1C6 DRAFT Funding provided by Environment Canada Submitted [Date] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Wildlife Species Description and Significance Eastern Baccharis is a densely branched and often multi-stemmed, woody, perennial, salt marsh shrub of the Aster family, typically 1 to 3 meters tall in Canada. The species is deciduous in Canada with alternate gray-green leaves. It is dioecious (male and female flowers on separate individuals), flowering in late summer. Inflorescences of tiny flowers arranged in terminal, leafy-bracted panicles which can be very numerous on larger shrubs. Fruit are light brown achenes with a series of elongated pappus bristles to enhance wind dispersal. These bristles are brilliant white and make the female plants very showy and easy to detect when in fruit in late summer and early fall. In Canada, Eastern Baccharis is rare, localized and 400+ km disjunct from the next nearest occurrence in northern Massachusetts, which could be associated with significant genetic divergence. Eastern Baccharis is the only native representative of its genus and subtribe in Canada and one of very few woody Aster family members native to Canada and is used horticulturally in the south and east United States. Baccharis species contain an array of chemicals used medicinally, including some with potential for cancer treatment, but formal investigation of their properties has been limited. American First Nations have used some species in the treatment of sores and wounds, as antibacterials and emetics.
