As we prepare for our churchwide Lenten season fast, keep in mind our 2017 Theme – Growing in Christ. Our reset cards for 2017 reflect the monthly scriptures supporting our theme, focusing on a separate growth message each month. For the time of our fast, the themes will focus on Growing in Love and Growing in the Word of God. You are encouraged to use this resource as a source of inspiration during our fasting period and beyond. Fasting is a spiritual disciple designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2017, as we seek to renew our relationship with God, God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life, if you dare fast, pray, study, and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains to pray, study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, shouldn’t this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough – as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate, and learn the power of quiet time. March 19, 2017 16 ©2017 Trinity United Church of Christ. All Rights Reserved. Any unauthorized use or reproduction is strictly prohibited. Announcements Don’t Leave Your Education to Chance!

The philanthropic mindset of millennials is greatly applauded. Encouraging research shows that this generation of young people between the ages of 18- 34 aren’t as enamored with hoarding millions (and billions) of dollars, as they are with being socially responsible and doing the right thing.

Case in point: Chancellor Bennett (aka Chance the Rapper) recently made major headlines in Chicago when the West Chatham native announced he was donating $1 million to support the always-ailing Chicago Public Schools. Obviously, that is a significant amount of money; but unfortunately, it’s just a drop in the bucket to the near billion dollar hole CPS has dug for itself; which makes you ponder how much education is really valued in this city, the state, and around the country. Consider while the new president is seeking more than $50 billion in additional military spending and the country’s education department constitutes a mere 3% of the budget, you realize it’s not a priority particularly for us.

Yet this is the knowledge economy. The 21st century is essentially about what you know and what you’re connected to, which, in many cases, is more valuable than money because information is really the new currency. That’s why we worked so very hard to make the Carter G. Woodson Regional Library a focal point in revitalizing the 95th Street Corridor. There are tons of information housed there, and while the Internet is remarkably wonderful, it can’t hold a candle to the physical presence of a world-class cultural institution of knowledge and discovery. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chance proved that big time! The recent three-time Grammy-award winner gives major credit to the Harold Washington Library’s YOUmedia space for mentoring him, musically, on the path to his skyrocketing young career. YOUmedia is a safe space within select public libraries that is exclusively for teens to network, collaborate, and discover new technologies for free. One such feature is a music studio where teens can create and produce content without bearing the huge expense of a professional studio. As part of the Woodson restoration, Endeleo insisted that it have a YOUmedia space; last January, Chance joined library officials and the community to celebrate its opening.

Students and parents, the message is clear: The gatekeepers to opportunity are gone! Whatever you choose to do or be can be done without someone’s approval, using the power of technology and your own ingenuity. What we tell young people at Endeleo is that they must supplement traditional education with an entrepreneurial spirit and a mindset of lifelong learning. Use what’s available to you for free to carve your own paths and to enrich your lives and those in your community. Then you can tell the so-called powers- that-be, “You don’t want no problem with me!”
