The show will also feature multiplatinum studio drummer Sonny Emory. In 2012 composer Pat Metheny brought together elite musicians to form the Unity Group, or what he calls a “Technicolor, IMAX version” of a jazz band. Metheny plays the guitar and guitar synthesizer for the group, while Ben Williams handles bass guitar, Chris Potter works the saxophone, Antonio Sanchez provides drums, and Giulio Carmassi is a triple threat on keyboard, trumpet, and vocals. The quintet’s eponymous debut album won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, bringing Metheny’s Grammy count to 20. The group’s 2014 release, Kin (←→), hit No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart and No. 50 on the Billboard 200. AllMusic.com particularly praises Metheny’s musicality on this release, saying it gives the album “an almost hummable sense of melodic euphoria.” Video: Pat Metheny Unity Group – Kin (←→) Preview Virginia native pianist Bruce Hornsby returns to his roots to serenade audiences with a folk and jazz- infused set. As a member of the band Bruce Hornsby & the Range, he penned the multiplatinum, Civil Rights Movement-inspired hit “The Way It Is”— a song that has since been sampled by many rap artists, including in 2pac. Hornsby played keyboard for rock band Grateful Dead for two years and was invited to be the presenter when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Piano makers Steinway & Sons honored Hornsby’s contributions to piano music by issuing a select line of 10 grand pianos autographed by him. Hornsby’s newest release, 2013’s Cluck Ol’ Hen, is part of his ongoing collaboration with bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs. Video: Bruce Hornsby – “China Doll” Classic Albums Live Presents: Pink Floyd—Dark Side of the Moon Friday, August 8, 2014 at 8 pm Whether you saw Pink Floyd live in concert or newly discovered the band, Classic Albums Live brings the rocking, authentic sound of the album Dark Side of the Moon to listeners of all ages. The band, composed of top-notch musicians, plays the entire album faithful to the original recording, following up with other Pink Floyd favorites. Last year the Toronto-based Classic Albums Live celebrated its tenth anniversary recreating and touring some of the most famous classic rock albums, including Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, Prince’s Purple Rain, Led Zeppelin II, and the Beatles’s The White Album and Abbey Road. Released in 1973, Dark Side of the Moon remained on the Billboard 200 chart for 14 consecutive years and is one of the best-selling albums of all time. Video: Classic Albums Live – Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (Live) Jim Gaffigan Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 8 pm Jim Gaffigan was crowned “the king of (clean) comedy” by The Wall Street Journal for his witty observations that poke fun at his love of food, family, and everyday life. Gaffigan’s career spans more than 20 years, blossoming from his start at an improv night class in New York City. In addition to his skills as a stand-up comedian, Gaffigan has acted in many movies, including 13 Going On 30, The Love Guru, and 17 Again. This year Gaffigan released a comedy special entitled Obsessed with the audio recording of the DVD charting at No. 1 on iTunes. Gaffigan’s 2013 memoir, Dad Is Fat, remained on The New York Times Best Seller’s list for over three months, and his follow-up book, Food: A Love Story, comes out this October. Video: Jim Gaffigan – Obsessed: “Weddings” (Part 1) Gavin DeGraw And Matt Nathanson Special Guest Andrew McMahon Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 7 pm Blue-eyed soul and R&B artist Gavin DeGraw joins forces with fellow singer/songwriter, folk-rock crooner Matt Nathanson, on their joint summer tour that features Andrew McMahon and his piano rock flair. Gavin DeGraw burst onto the music scene in 2003 when his first single, “I Don’t Want to Be,” was chosen as the theme song for the hit television drama One Tree Hill. Since then he has released numerous pop-rock and soul-tinged ballads including “Chariot,” “Not Over You,” and “In Love with a Girl.” He has garnered two Grammy nominations and starred in the 14th season of Dancing with the Stars. Rolling Stone praises the “hint of grit in his tenor that tips power ballads like ‘Soldier’ toward soul music.” DeGraw’s latest release, 2013’s Make A Move, hit No. 10 on the Billboard 200. Video: Gavin DeGraw – “Best I Ever Had” (Live at Billboard Music Awards) Massachusetts native and acoustic guitarist Matt Nathanson is best known for his platinum-certified “Come on Get Higher” and the Sugarland collaboration “Run,” both of which cracked the top 60 of the Billboard Hot 100. His songs have been a staple of primetime television series, having been featured on a variety of shows including Scrubs, NCIS, Private Practice, The Vampire Diaries, and One Tree Hill. Nathanson appeared on the 16th season of the reality show The Bachelor to perform his song “Faster.” His most recent work is the July 2013 release Last of the Great Pretenders, which gave him his highest charting album to date. Video: Matt Nathanson – “Falling Apart” Andrew McMahon started his musical career as the lead singer and pianist for the alt-rock band Something Corporate before launching his solo project: Jack’s Mannequin. After two top ten albums, The Glass Passenger and People and Things, under the alias, McMahon began releasing music under his own name in 2012. McMahon penned three songs for the second season of the musical television show Smash: “Reach for Me,” “I’m Not Sorry,” and “I Heard Your Voice In a Dream,” for which he received a nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards. His debut solo album, The Pop Underground, was released last year. Video: Andrew McMahon – “Synesthesia” (Acoustic) Tickets can be purchased online at wolftrap.org or by calling 1.877.WOLFTRAP. • Technofeminism
    - TechnoFeminism JUDY WAJCMAN polity 2 Technoscience Reconfigured Men and things exchange properties and replace one another; this is what gives technological projects their full savour. Bruno Latour, Aramis Feminist approaches of the 1990s and today adopt an opti mistic perspective on the nature of digital technologies and their implications for women. In doing so, they present an image of new technology as radically distinct from older technologies and, as such, positive for women. In looking forward to what these new technologies may make possi ble, they elaborate a new feminist 'imaginary' different from the 'material reality' of the existing technological order. In this way, in common with other proponents of the impact of information and biotechnologies, they dis tinguish new technologies from more established ones, and downplay any continuities between them. While attributing a technological determinism to the past, paradoxically such approaches infer a new form of technological determinism, albeit one that predicts a future that advantages women over men. The consequences of this are explored in subsequent chapters. We shall see that Technoscience Reconfigured 33 if the social relations of older technologies are presented in too rigid a form, then the new technologies come to be seen as too open and malleable. If the former give rise to an immobilizing pessimism, the latter obviate the need for feminist technopolitics. Recent studies of science and tech nology have transformed our understanding of the social relations of technologies, both old and new. What I suggest in this chapter is that the social shaping, or constructivist, perspective offers the possibility of a fruitful interchange with feminism that can overcome the unsatisfactory dualisms with which much feminist analysis has been plagued.
