“A Real Fine Day” with Robbin Thompson by Heike Clarke

he first time I heard about Robbin Thompson was Tin a conversation with Kenny Cohen. “Check him out,” he advised. “Robbin is from Melbourne and he has just released a new album.” Then he added: “He used to sing with .” - Ok, it always works. Throw a famous name into the mix and you get the at- tention. Checking musicians out is easy these days. Go to YouTube, type in the name, and there it was... a video with a live recording of “A Real Fine Day,” a studio per- formance by Robbin Thompson and Steve Bassett. The positive vibes were so convincing, I posted the video on my facebook page to share with my friends.

In a later conversation with Robbin we talked about this song that he named the CD after. “The version you post- ed was the first time it was performed. I wrote it the day before,” he tells me. “When I wrote it I went through a tough time in my life and needed nothing more than “A Real Fine Day.”

But let’s start from the beginning and that was right here on the Space Coast in 1956 when Robbin was seven years old and his father was transferred to Melbourne to work for Boeing. Rock’n’roll was young just like the space program and excitement and creativity were ram- pant. Robbin loves to remember those days: “We listened to Elvis and Ricky Nelson, bought records, and wanted to be like them.” That’s why Robbin started to practise singing. “It was a way to become poplar with the girls

18 - Brevard Live September 2013 Brevard Live and I wasn’t good at football,” he laughs. But there was so much more to it. Between 1963 and 1967 Robbin was the lead singer and songwriter with several Florida-based bands including The Hanging Five, The Five Gents and The Tasmanians. The latter band even released a couple of sin- gles in 1966. For Robbin that’s another great story: “Police officer Bud Blunt paid for us to record at Criteria Studios in Miami. I was riding on A1A when I heard our song being played on the local am radio station, I pulled my car over and cried.” He wants me to know how important and dear these memories are to him. So Robbin emails me two mp3s and writes: “I think you need a few songs of mine that are about growing up down in Brevard. The 1st one is called “Candyapple Red,” it’s from my album 2 B’s Please from 1980. The other is called “Missileman” and it is the story of how many of us who lived in Brevard got there. basi- cally it’s about following our father’s dreams.” (We will post them on our website and facebook page.)

In 1968 Robbin Thompson formed Transcontinental Mer- cy Flight before moving to Richmond, Virginia, to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. It was the summer of 1969. Some friends had died from drugs and it was time to leave the Space Coast. “It became an unforgettable year. My friend Steve Andrews and I traveled to a surf festival in San Diego, CA. forearm, has become a badge of courage to the supporters that wear it.

The group, also referred to as TWLOHA, has come a long way since the earliest pressing of T-shirts. Their website boasts an array of clothing (shirts, tank tops, hoodies) and accessories (hats, stickers, bracelets). More than just an on- line store, the site informs the first time visitor of their vi- sion (“the vision is that we actually believe these things) to the dedicated supporter who comes out to their numerous events across the country. If you get the feeling you’re visit- ing a rock band’s website rather than a support group’s, that is because music plays such an important role in the cause. “Music shows up in the original story I wrote because it was a source of hop for my friend Renee,” explains Tworkowski. “Friends in bands were literally the first ones to wear our Photo by Andy Barron shirts and get the word out about TWLOHA. Beyond all that, we just believe that music suggests it’s ok to be honest, To Write Love On Her Arms: ok to feel things, ok to ask questions...”

The marriage of music and social cause does not just end with the band wearing the cause. TWLOHA is currently on its 7th year on the VANS WARPed tour music festival, Close to Home which came to Orlando last month at the Central Florida by Steve Keller Fairgrounds. The local group received national recognition in 2011 as the winner of Chase bank’s fist ever American Gives Awards’ one million dollar grant. “It allowed us to take our annual event, Heavy and Light, an evening of songs, conversations and hope, and take it to 17 cities across the country. Before the grant, Heavy and Light only ever happened in Orlando, so it was amazing to get to share it with so many people in so many places. It helps us funds other programs and other work as well such as our sto- ryteller high school program. Beyond the money, it was just a huge moment for us. To be recognized and to be able to talk about hope and help on national television.”

Tworkowski is actually on sabbatical this summer... working. He is, as he calls it, “spending the summer in a California canyon working on a book.” After working non stop for the past 7 years, I ask him what is the most surprising thing he learned from his work? “Just that so many feel alone and struggle in silence when it comes to these issues. I’ve come to believe that it really is ok to be honest about these things, that is ok to ask for help. If someone broke their arm, they wouldn’t try to hide it or try to fake it. It shouldn’t be any different when the problem is mental health or addiction. It’s part of being helpful. We all experience pain and we all get stuck and it’s ok to ask for help. I struggle with depression and I have friends and family who have been affected by both addiction and depression.”

To Write Love On Her Arms continues to grow and ex- pand their outreach programs across the world. New op- portunities and offers come in every day. As founder, Tworkowski remains in charge of the direction and integ- rity the group maintains. “We say no a lot”, he contends. “We’re constantly getting hit with ideas and suggestions and people wanting to partner with us. We hear criticism as well. We say no a lot but it’s important to keep an open mind because we want to say yes to the good ideas.” There have certainly been a lot of surprising open doors over the last seven years. Having his life’s work head- quartered in his home town is important to Tworkowski. “It’s something I’m proud of. Obviously it’s great to be near family and friends. I love that we get to introduce the area; whether it’s the interns or the staff or the college students who come to our annual conference. Beyond that, I like the idea that maybe we can be a part of show- ing young people that good stuff, and even big stuff can happen right here in Brevard County. That it all doesn’t happen in NY or LA.”

The Column By Chuck Van Riper

Land of the Free? ack in the 70’s, I lived in Seattle for a couple of years. BWhile there, I played music and was an artist at the infamous Pike Place Market. At the time, the market was under construction, making way for new shops and things like that. In those days, I had hair down to my butt, a ZZ- Top-esque beard, and lived a total hippie-musician-artist lifestyle. We would play music on the streets of the market because it was really fun and we’d make more money than playing a bar gig. (If you peruse my Facebook page you can see a picture.) The rules were: You could only play in areas designated by a music note painted on the ground, and you could only stay there an hour, so as to give an- other act a chance to play. One day, we finished our set and decided to find a spot to discreetly smoke some weed. One caveat of being a musician: we always had THE best weed! We found a corner to hang out and lit up. No soon- er had we taken our first toke when a very elderly cou- ple walked past us. The gentleman mumbled to his wife, ”Smells like they’re smoking heroine or something ever there!”, to which the wife nonchalantly replied, “ohhh…. it’s ok, they’re musicians.”. A few minutes after that, here come the cops. “OK, put it out and hand it over.”, one cop requested. Since I was the one holding the joint at the time, I replied “Hand..hmphhh..over what….hmmppphh”, trying to hold in the smoke as long as I could. “Uhhh.. that joint you’re holding in your hand!”, he demanded. “Oh, this?”, I asked, taking one last hit before we were doomed. “Yes!!”, he de- manded again. Ok, so I handed him what was left of the joint and he asked if I had anymore. I was holding my little grey film canister packed with the purple and yellow haired substance. I reluctantly handed it over. He seemed impressed at my choice of cannabis. “You know, it’s ille- gal to smoke in public.”, he warned. I told him I had never heard of that law and assured him it would never happen again. He gave me a ticket. The fine was $7. That was then. It was a beautiful era. Then came the “War on Drugs” which cost the Ameri- can taxpayer TRILLIONS of dollars and resulted in ab- solutely nothing except a lot of people being incarcerated unreasonably. Now, you can argue the pros and cons for legalization all you want, but being put in prison for smok-

ing a joint (yes, that does happen) is unreasonable to me. I’ve written about this a few times. Let the punishment fit the crime. I think $7 is reasonable. Anyway, according to statistics, the United States incarcerates more of its popu- lation than any other country on the planet! As a matter of fact, nearly one quarter of the world’s prisoners are in U.S. jails. Welcome to the home of the free! As many states are now legalizing or de-criminalizing the non-violent act of smoking a joint, Attorney General Eric Holder has announced “sweeping plans designed to address the issue through drug-sentencing reform”. Hold- er’s blueprint included plans to divert low-level drug of- fenders to treatment and community service programs and implement an expanded prison program to allow for the release of some elderly, non-violent offenders.” Prison overcrowding has become a real burden to the system and the taxpayer. The cost these days for a year in prison is about $30,000. That’s money we the taxpayer pay. “We need to ensure that incarceration is used to punish, deter and rehabilitate not merely to convict, warehouse and for- get,” Holder said in remarks to the American Bar Associa- tion in San Francisco. “Although incarceration has a role to play in our justice system, widespread incarceration at the federal, state and local levels is both ineffective and unsustainable. ... It imposes a significant economic bur- den -- totaling $80 billion in 2010 alone -- and it comes with human and moral costs that are impossible to calcu- late.” It’s good to see someone finally addressing this is- sue. The people I see being opposed to this are all that are beholding to and lobbied by the “Private” prison system, which is huge business these days. Watch out for that sto- ry! Then again, what is a non-violent crime? Apparently, insider trading, predatory lending, credit default swaps and defrauding the economy out of $42 Trillion causing a global depression is still only a minor offense because nobody’s been put in jail for that yet!

emember Robert Rowlette, the blind musician who founded the Outtasight Band? So you haven’t Rseen them in a while? That’s because Robert just underwent a multiple bypass open heart surgery which put his family in financial dire straits. To help with some of the medical bills his friends have planned the “All Star Jam And Bowling For Bobby.” The event takes place Sunday, September 22nd, 1 to 6 pm, at the Shore Lanes Bowling Center/ City Limits in Palm Bay. Judy Tatum Lane is known to longtime magazine readers as the author of “The Glory Days” remembering the time when the Space Coast was young and the music scene exploded with rock’n’roll. She is also a frequent contributor of photography for Brevard Live Magazine. Judy has been Robert’s friend and following the Outtasight Band in which her husband John Lane has played bass. She decided to sit down one more time and write a new chapter of the “Glory Days” featuring another legendary musician: Robert Rowlette HHHHHHHHHHHH by Judy Tatum Lane HHHHHHHHHHHH

event in his life could have been a part of what made him decide he wanted to be a musician, along with the fact that he just cannot remember when he didn’t love music. I know that feeling myself, which is why Rob- ert and I can sit on the telephone and talk literally at times for hours about musicians and bands we share a mutual love for, songs, whether it be on the latest cd or songs from the doo woop era. . . .and we never run out of musicians and bands to get excited over, as though we know/knew them personally. That’s how much im- pact they have on us.

Robert can always be seen playing around town, wheth- er in his own band which could range from the big band to a duo or single, whatever the gig requires. Or he may be sitting in with one of the countless musicians who call him when they need him on keyboards and vocals. Again, Robert will not be confined, and is not held to one venue. You may see him playing on a Sunday after- noon with multiple friends at the Cocoa Beach Library, a nursing home where he is always more than welcomed and brings such joy, the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, the King Center, an art festival or Squid Lips. And he will always have his very special wife Barbara by his side, making sure to dedicate a song to her each show and tell her he loves her. They are what all couples aspire to be. And I am extremely proud to call them my friends, and so thankful for the night 12 years ago that Robert came to sit in with the band.

Mother-Daughter Team Features Italian Cuisine Janna Maria’s by Charlene Hemmle

’ve been to New York once. It was a short trip but it was long enough to partake in the passion that the Italians are Iknown for cooking with. We ate out for each meal and soon realized that the “Italian chain” restaurants were not the ones with the long lines of hungry locals waiting to be seated. Jana Maria’s on A1A in Indian Harbor Beach

If you’ve never been to New York and tried authentic Italian food you should. However, if life does not allow for long distance travel any time soon, just take a short drive to Janna Maria’s on A1A in Indian Harbor Beach. There you can savor the same delicious cui- sine hand made by the owners - a mother and daughter team straight from Queens Village, Mulberry Street to be exact. Daughter, Janna Maria greets customers, Mom Liz oversees the kitchen and together they prepare and serve homemade meals for their customers just like they did back home. Each piece of bread, the pizza dough and the salad dressings are freshly made in-house each day and everything is made to order. A friend and I went for lunch and split the Picatta Pasta which is a creamy bowl of angel hair goodness sauteed with roasted red peppers, artichokes, capers and white wine. The Janna’s Special pizza was also brought to us steaming hot and cheesy, topped with kalamata olives, artichoke hearts & pepperoni. You can taste a difference in the crust because they cook brick oven style and forego the metal cooking surface. Coming up on their first year anniversary, Janna Maria’s is a re- freshing new place to dine. They boast some extra perks like all you can eat mussels on Wednesdays and live music on Tuesdays as well as periodically throughout the month. It is a stylish restaurant with a warm homey feel. Janna and Liz hand select all of their meats, produce and ingredients and make sure that they are up to the strict standards of their northern heritage so everything is as fresh and delicious as possible. If you are in need of food for a group of people, give Janna Ma- ria’s a few hours notice and you can purchase trays brimming with authentic Italian home cooking. You can order a pizza to go or dine in and you will be treated to a meal made with a passion that will leave you saying “Bravo”!

Local Legend Michael Holtzinger

By Charles Knight

o far in this series I’ve written about Blues Pop and Jazz legends. Back in the 80’s there Swere a lot of hard rocking bands and venues here on the Space Coast. This month’s legend is a vet- eran hard rocker that has been as integral as any other in my opinion.

Michael Holtzinger was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and his family moved to the US while he was still an infant.
