Weldon “What should we do?” John the Baptist is the saint of common sense, purification and compassion. He knows the consequences of knowing the truth and living it. He is the “going toward Christ.” The words of the prophets and the Spirit of God are fuel for John. He seems to have a feverish anticipation for the Messiah; yet, his message is more than emotions. “What should we do?” the people ask. John’s message is a practical faith to be lived out. He baptized tax collectors and soldiers asked for his wisdom. Common Sense: John did not ask the tax collectors to change their profession. John, in the name of God, does not demand exceptional acts, but first and foremost the fulfillment of one’s duty in a just manner. The first step towards eternal life is always the observance of the commandments. He tells soldiers to live honestly with respect to superiors and all those with whom they come in contact. AND, to not complain about wages, an almost impossible task for soldiers. Compassion: “Share the extra cloak, share the food.” Those who have can share with those who have not. According to the Gospel of Matthew, judgement is based on how we aid those in need. Purification: John came to baptize with water; the messiah will baptize with Holy Spirit and fire. Both of these baptisms purify. Peter and John went to Samaria to pray over persons to receive the Holy Spirit as they only had received the Gospel and been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8: 14-17) Those who receive and accept the Word of God are purified. The Holy Spirit works in those who want it. This action purifies us from the things that get in the way of the Word of God working in our lives in prayer and sacraments. - Fr. Weldon December 21st - St. Peter Canisius Born in Nijmegen, Holland in 1521, St. Peter Canisius was a renowned Jesuit priest who founded colleges during the Reformation that were respected even by Protestants. He won the hearts of the German people by ministering to the sick and dying during a plague. St. Peter Canisius’ versions of the Catechism of the Catholic Church approached Christian Doctrine in wisdom & justice, linki ng common sense to the Sacraments. He is known as the Second Apostle of Germany and was named as a Doctor of the Church in 1925. Before we can spread our faith we must have a solid foundation in ourselves; St. Peter Canisius, Pray for Us consider start the year off by reading a small portion of the Catechism each day. DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART At this parish we have this particular devotion which I hope will strengthen all of us. I ask you as faithful parishioners to pray this devotion with regularity as we venture closer to the renovation of our church. St. Alphonsus Ligouri gave us the litany of the Sacred Heart. It is my hope to incorporate some of these invocations in the new design. I am proud to celebrate the faith with you through sacred art. House of Jesus, fountain of life and holiness, have mercy on us. St. Michael Garicoits, pray for us. St. Peter Julian Eymard, pray for us.
