Bring flowers of the rarest…… Creating a May Altar in your Home Many people create a small altar in their home during the month of May. The altar is traditionally dedicated to Mary, the mother of God as May is the Marian month when Catholics give special praise and honour to Jesus’ mother Mary, gifted to us as our mother too. May is also the first month of summer, so it comes to pass that altars which are created during this time are adorned with flowers that bloom at this time of year and with particular prayers, or itemsof devotion such as rosary beads to decorate this special space and to express our love and honour to Mary. Here are a couple of steps that you and your family can follow when preparing to have a May Altar in your home….. 1: Plan a nature walk Decide upon a place to go for a walk together. On your nature walk, try to locate some of the following traditional flowers that have been used for May altars over the generations. It is good to choose wildflowers, if you can, which are far better for the environment. Cut commercial flowers can sometimes come with a big carbon footprint, which Pope Francis encourages us to try to reduce. Some flowers you might like to look for on your nature walk might include.... □ Wildflowers □ Buttercups □ Primroses □ Daffodils □ Wild bluebells □ Cowslips □ Lilac 2: Pick the location for the May Altar in your home Try and involve all members of the household in the decision-making about where your family May Altar will be placed. -

Candlemas Share the Light Welcome Today the year is coming out of darkness and the days are lengthening: we take a last look back to the joys of Christmas; we hear the story of Anna and Simeon as they welcome Christ and Simeon revealing him as the light to the world. Then we turn to take a first look towards Lent and the cross and Easter. Let us rejoice in the light of Christ and that he has come into the world. May all our lights together become one flame that warms the world to Christ. Sermon preached by the Priest Pastor St Marylebone Parish Church Candlemas 2020 Walking down Marylebone High Street can lead one into all sorts of temptation. So much gorgeous stuff on offer in the shops. One of my weaknesses is candles, I adore them, and there are so many shops that sell them, even ones that ONLY sell them. I nearly fell over when I went to enquire the prices in Diptyque. Well I didn’t fall over but smiled politely and reversed slowly out of the door. Candles have become a lifestyle accessory that scent our lives and create a mood. Of course, for our ancestors they were a necessity rather than a luxury. Maybe that is why they would bring the candles for the year into church at this time of year to be blessed on the feast of the Presentation of Christ also called Candlemas. Without the electricity we simply assume will be there at the flick of a switch, candles were essential to life. Especially in a dark and cold winter. When you are a vicar, you spend an awful amount of time on candles. Ordering votives, baptism candles, oil to fill up the altar candles, choosing a design for the paschal candle, pushing through candles into cardboard holders for Christmas and Easter, fiddling about with advent candles and hoping they don’t set fire to the Christmas decorations or children’s hair. Of course, if you are Rector of Marylebone, you have an army of people to do all of this for you. So why bother with candles in church? In our brave new risk averse digital age, it would make much more sense to have candles powered by electricity. -

Indigeneity in the Oruro Carnival: official memory, Bolivian identity and the politics of recognition Ximena Córdova Oviedo ruro, Bolivia’s fifth city, established in the highlands at an altitude of almost 4,000 metres, nestles quietly most of the year among the mineral-rich mountains that were the reason for its foundation Oin 1606 as a Spanish colonial mining settlement. Between the months of November and March, its quiet buzz is transformed into a momentous crescendo of activity leading up to the region’s most renowned festival, the Oruro Carnival parade. Carnival is celebrated around February or March according to the Christian calendar and celebrations in Oruro include a four- day national public holiday, a street party with food and drink stalls, a variety of private and public rituals, and a dance parade made up of around 16,000 performers. An audience of 400,000 watches the parade (ACFO, 2000, p. 6), from paid seats along its route across the city, and it is broadcast nationally to millions more via television and the internet. During the festivities, orureños welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from other cities in Bolivia and around the world, who arrive to witness and take part in the festival. Those who are not performing are watching, drinking, eating, taking part in water fights or dancing, often all at the same time. The event is highly regarded because of its inclusion since 2001 on the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and local authorities promote it for its ability to bring the nation together. -

FEBRUARY 2013 FEAST DAYS Saturday, February 2 — Presentation of the Lord This feast commemorates Mary’s purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result it is also known as “Candlemas”— Christ our light has come to us. We also remember the first members of the Bordeaux Sodality who made their first act of consecration on Feb. 2, 1801. Wednesday, February 6 — Saint Paul Miki and Companions In the late 16th century, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit scholastic, is the best known among these martyrs. When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Christians lived around Nagasaki and had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were canonized in 1862. Friday, February 8 — Saint Josephine Bakhita Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. She was kidnapped as a child by slave traders who gave her the name “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” She was purchased by an Italian consul who brought her to Italy. There she lived with the Canossian Sisters in Venice and was formally introduced to the faith, baptized, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint in October 2000. Monday, February 11 — Our Lady of Lourdes This memorial honors the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. -

Those who can afford to do so sacrifice their best domestic animals, such as sheep or cows. This practice recalls Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, in obedience to God, and commemorates God's forgiveness. September 1 Church year begins (Orthodox Christianity) This day marks the beginning of the Orthodox Christian liturgical calendar. September 8 Nativity of Mary (Christianity) This feast originates in fifth century Jerusalem and celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. This is recognized in the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches. September 12 Ghambar Paitishem (Zoroastrianism) This is the third of the six Ghambar festivals in the Zoroastrian year. This five-day seasonal festival celebrates the creation of the earth, and the summer crop harvest. September 14 Holy Cross Day (Christianity) This day recognizes the Cross as a symbol of triumph in the Christian religion. The date traces back to the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on September 14, 335. By order of Saint Helena and her son, the first Christian Roman Emperor Constantine, the church was built over the ruins of the Crucifixion and Burial sites in Israel. According to some traditions, it was also at this site that Helena found the True Cross. -

Track 1 (4:17) Ave maris stella is a popular liturgical hymn of unknown origin. It can be dated back to at least the 9th century. The hymn is frequently attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), a devout client of Our Lady. It is found in ancient codices of the Divine Office for Vespers on Marian feasts. Today it is still in use in the Divine Office, the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, and as a Benediction hymn. Next listen as the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury, conductor, from the CD Evensong and Vespers at King’s, sings Hans Leo Hassler’s Ave Maris Stella. Track 2 (5:43) Most antiphons are short, unassuming pieces, sung as prelude and postlude to the chanting of a psalm. Somewhat more substantial are antiphons to be sung with the canticles of the Divine Office. One of these is “Tu es pastor ovium,” sung with the Vespers canticle Magnificat on St. Peter’s Day. Next we hear the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice & Saint-Maur, Clervaux singing this Antiphon and Canticle. Track 3 (3:42) A special group of antiphons, not sung with psalms, are those performed in honour of the Blessed Virgin as independent “anthems,” often in the Compline service at the end of the day.
