Expansion of suburbia is often coupled with replacement of native plants by alien ornamental plants such as crepe myrtle, Bradford pear, and Japanese maple. Two projects were conducted for this thesis. The purpose of the first project (Chapter 2) was to conduct an analysis of existing larval Lepidoptera and Symphyta hostplant records in the southeastern United States, comparing their species richness on common native and alien woody plants. We found that, in most cases, native plants support more species of eruciform larvae compared to aliens. Alien congener plant species (those in the same genus as native species) supported more species of larvae than alien, non-congeners. Most of the larvae that feed on alien plants are generalist species. However, most of the specialist species feeding on alien plants use congeners of native plants, providing evidence of a spillover, or false spillover, effect.

												  Sticky Integumental Coating of a Dalcerid Caterpillar: a Deterrent to AntsGENERAL NOTES Journal of the Lepidopterists' SOciety 48(4), 1994,381- 386 STICKY INTEGUMENTAL COATING OF A DALCERID CATERPILLAR: A DETERRENT TO ANTS Additional key words: Chemical defense, Dalcerides ingenita, Lepidoptera, larva, Camponotus fioridanus. Dalceridae are a small group (85 species) of mostly neotropical moths with sluglike larvae covered with a gelatinous coating (Dyar 1925, Hopp 1928, Stehr & McFarland 1987, Miller 1994). Nothing was known about the chemistry or function of this coating, although it had been proposed to serve for defense (Stehr & McFarland 1987). We here present evidence, based on staged encounters between a dalcerid caterpillar and ants, that the larval coating can indeed serve as an effective deterrent to attack. The larvae were offspring of gravid females of Dalcerides ingenita (Hy. Edwards), the only species of Dalceridae native to the United States, collected at Ash Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona. They were raised on mature foliage of one of their host plants, Arctostaphylos pungens (H.B.K.) (Ericaceae), as well as on leaves of various oaks [Quercus emoryi Torrey (Fagaceae) figures in the moth's natural diet]. Voucher specimens of adults and larvae are deposited in the entomological collection of the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.G The dorsal investiture of D. ingenita has the warty appearance (Fig. 1) characteristic of dalcerid larvae (Dyar 1925, Stehr & McFarland 1987). The investiture is moderately sticky and can be readily pulled from a larva by rolling it onto a glass rod (Fig. 2). Pulling on a single wart with forceps typically results in detachment of a string or cluster of warts (Fig.

												  Oak, Scarlet Oak SawflyProblem: Scarlet Oak Sawfly (Caliroa quercuscoccineae) Hosts: Scarlet, black, pin, and white oaks Description: Scarlet Oak Sawfly slugs feed by removing the green layer of the leaf leaving behind a “window pane” effect. These insects are slug-like and have a shiny, yellowish-green coloration with a black head and black legs. Scarlet oak sawfly slugs are gregarious and feed in groups. There are two generations per year with the first causing damage in June and the second in August. Recommendations: Natural controls such as microbial diseases and other natural enemies usually keep these insects in check, but there may be outbreaks at times. Numerous control measures are effective, if needed. For example, insecticidal soap, malathion, acephate, bifenthrin (Hi-Yield Bug Blaster Bifenthrin, Ortho Insect Killer for Lawn & Landscape) and permethrin (Hi-Yield 38 Plus Turf, Termite & Ornamental Insect Spray; Hi-Yield Lawn, Garden, Pet, & Livestock Insect Spray) are all effective controls. Bacillus thuringienses (Dipel, Thuricide) is not because it is only effective on the larvae of lepidopterous insects (moths and butterflies), not sawflies. References: 1. The survey was conducted over a period of eight and a half months using twelve trap types – Malaise traps, canopy traps (upper and lower collector), Lindgren multifunnel traps (black, green, and purple), pan traps (blue, purple, red, white, and yellow), and pitfall traps – and Berlese-Tullgren extraction of leaf litter. Some cannot be differentiated at any life stage. Over the past decade, DNA barcoding has gained increasing adoption as a tool to both identify known species and to reveal cryptic taxa. Although there has not been a focused effort to develop a barcode library for them, reference sequences are now available for 77% of the 409 species of arthropods documented on major pest databases. Aside from developing the reference library needed to guide specimen identifications, past barcode studies have revealed that a significant fraction of arthropod pests are a complex of allied taxa.

												  Clemson University Plant Problem Clinic Annual Report for 2015Clemson University Plant Problem Clinic Annual Report for 2015 Introduction to the 2015 Annual Report The Clemson University Plant Problem Clinic serves the people of South Carolina as a multidisciplinary lab that provides diagnoses of plant diseases and identifications of weeds and insect pests of plants and structures. Solutions for these problems are provided through management recommendations. As a part of the Department of Plant Industry in Regulatory Services, the Plant Problem Clinic also helps to detect and document new plant diseases and pests in South Carolina and serves as an information resource for Clemson University Extension, teaching, regulatory and research personnel. This year, Madeline Dowling and Suzette Sharpe, graduate students in Plant Pathology, worked part time in the Plant Problem Clinic. These two women provided extremely valuable assistance due to their knowledge of Plant Pathology. Fortunately, they will both return for the growing season of 2016. They are much appreciated for their knowledge, hard work, dedication and pleasant personalities. Predeesh Chandran, M.S. Entomologist, was another helpful addition to our lab crew. Predeesh will be assisting where needed in the Regulatory Services Labs, mainly by working in the Agricultural Service Lab during their winter to spring busy season and in the Plant Problem Clinic, as an Entomologist and Lab Assistant, during our summer to fall busy season. He came on board early in the fall and while waiting for his visa to be accepted, he worked as a volunteer! He will provide valuable assistance to Dr. Tim Drake, who has been overwhelmed with more insect identification samples than he could handle, given his many other duties.
