My family pet by William Chen

We have a big dog in my family- its name is Won-Won. It’s black and it’s 12 years old. We didn’t get it from a pet store. There’s a sad story about how we found it. One day, my mom and dad were driving in Taoyuan. When they were driving past a construction site, they saw a dog hit by a car. The dog was dead at the site. Suddenly, a baby dog came out from the big dog. Then my mom cut the umbilical cord with scissors and took it home.

It has a bad temper and it barks a lot. One time, it bit my dad when my dad clipped his toenails. Everyone in the family is scared of it. It doesn’t like to go outside. It likes to stay at home. My dad feeds it, walks it, and showers it but he doesn’t like to play with it.

It is getting old now and it can’t eat big bones. Although I don’t play with Won- Won, I still see it as one of our family.

If I could have a pet

Amber Tan

If I could have a pet, I would want a monkey. Monkeys are fun to play with and they are smart. They have brown fur and red bottoms. They live in arboreal habitats and they like swinging from branch to branch.

If I had a monkey, I would name it Bobby. We could play and become good friends. If I’m in a bad mood, the monkey will do funny faces to make me feel better. My monkey will be nice to people. It won’t bite people. I will teach it manners and some tricks. I will teach it how to ride a bike, then we can ride our bikes together at the park. I can bring it to school when there’s a party. It will make the whole class laugh.

If I could have a pet by Jenny Lin

If I could have a pet, I would like to keep a shark. I can learn many skills from a shark. Sharks can swim fast in the ocean, and have supernatural sense of smell. They are fish and have many teeth, thick skin and beautiful fins. I think that sharks are very brave and smart because they know how to hunt animals when they are hungry. They have bad temper, disorderly teeth and ferocious appearance.

If I had a shark, I could learn its braveness, calmness and smartness. But sharks are too big to fit in my room. Also, they have big appetite. I would have to spend a lot of money preparing food for it.

The shark is the top animal of the food chain in the ocean. I will look up to it and try to be the best I can. If I’m in an unfamiliar environment, I will tell myself to be brave like a shark. On the other side, I don’t think sharks would like to be kept at home or in an aquarium. They like to swim freely in the ocean.

If I could have a pet by Zoey Liao

What animal is smaller than an elephant and bigger than a mouse? What animal has four legs and one tail? What animal is human’s good friend?

If I could have a pet, I would want a dog. We don’t have a dog at home because my little sister is scared of dogs. Having a dog at home would be so much fun.

If I had a dog, I would roll on the floor with it, play with it, walk it at the park, play catch with it and talk to it. If I could have a dog, I would want a small and cute one. I will name it Bob after the character from the movie Minions. Because he is funny and everyone likes to be around him.

When I’m sad, my dog will make me happy. When I see it, I won’t feel sad anymore. I have many stuffed dogs in my bedroom. If my dog is bored when I’m at school, it can play with my stuffed dogs.

I hope one day my little sister won’t be scared of dogs so we can keep a pet at home.

Captain Blah VS The Centipede By Oscar Wei There was once a man name Blah Turbo. On his seventeenth birthday, a mad scientist made a mech-radio. It had a gigantic mouth full of razor sharp teeth, a pair of hands and feet armed with claws. It bit Blah Turbo in the butt and as soon as it bit into him, Blah Turbo began to change. First, his mouth became a lot bigger. Then, his feet became paddles to help him swim (they won’t be used in this adventure though). Finally, his body was armed by invisible armor! At the same moment, a mad scientist (not the one who made the stupid radio) was mak- ing a mech (again) Centipede that was 550 cm. It had laser beam eyes and strong armor (not invisible). When he was done, it killed him (not the mad S. killed the C., but the C. killed the mad S.) and exploded in the laboratory. As for Blah Turbo, he sat on his best armchair and stayed there for exactly 54 seconds thinking, “what is going on?!”. As a genius, he thought very quickly and found the answer. He thought that god might think that he was a good enough person to be a super-hero. Then he made a mask and cape to wear. The next day, he got his favorite newspaper, ‘Daily News’’ and found out that a mech Centipede was attacking town after town. The first town it attacked was Avil, then Bagel, then Cattle. He thought the next town it would attack is the Daily, because A, B, C, … D! He knew he had to save it to protect the people and to save his favorite newspaper ‘Daily News’. So he put on his mask and cape and set off. He thought that Captain Blah would be good because his name has a Blah. When he whispered his new name, it came out 1000 x louder than he expected. Finally, he knew what his superpower was, a loud 20010 x voice that could even break the strongest material in the world! Then, he Captain Blah found the Centipede. It was much larger than he ex- pected. When the Centipede saw him it burst into laughter, “what do you think you are, a superhero with duck feet!, hahaha!”. Just as it was laughing, C.B. found it’s weak spot, his belly! Somehow he just needed it to look up and let it ‘s belly show. He thought about telling it that there are 1000 helicopters with 20 bullets on each of them. That did the trick. He yelled a loud 2000 x roar, and when he was finished the Centipede dropped dead. When it almost died, it weakly said, “I ….w-w-will have….re...re...revenge!”. Now, people still don’t know who this hero is, but I can tell you now. It’s Blah Turbo, the best superhero in the whole wide world! The End.

Life Cycle of a Plant By Marcus Chen

Most plants start as a seed. When the seed is in the soil and water seeps into it, the seed’s shell will be broken. When sprouts come out of the soil it will get sunshine. Then, the roots spread out so they can grab the soil. The plant will grow into trees, weeds, or vines. It grows higher and higher, and will grow more leaves. It grows flowers to make new seeds. Then, it starts to become a fruit. The fruit is used to protect the seeds. The fruit has many kinds of shapes and sizes. Some have burs or wings, and some are scattered by water to start a new plant. Ok, plants do need nutrients to grow, but there are some plants that eat insects, like a Venus Flytrap. These plants get nutrients from insects. The end.

We all don’t know When it’s time to go. Because we all have fun In my cool school.

A Magic Fox and a Whale

by Eric Tsai

Once upon a time, there was a great magic fox called Eric and a king whale, called Amos. The magic fox had a magic wand. The magic wand could make all wishes come true, but no one could use that magic wand besides the fox. The whale king was very bad. He didn’t want to be friends with the fox, but the fox wanted to be friends with the king.

One day, King Amos wanted to find food. Suddenly, a giant octopus appeared. The octopus was scared of the king, so he sprayed ink out. Amos didn’t like the smell, so he fainted! When he woke up, he was in a net! He couldn’t get out. He was very sad. He hoped someone would come to help him.

The fox was in a village called “Free Village”. Nobody needed to give money, and everything was free. Eric was very surprised and got an ice cream to eat. When he finished eating, he thought, “Maybe I should go see King Amos.” He took out his magic wand and said, “Magic Wand, I want to go into the sea, take me to King Amos.”

When he opened his eyes, he saw that King Amos was stuck in a net. “Help, help, help!” shouted the whale king. Eric was very worried. “Magic Wand, I wish for Amos to be… wait, I don’t want to help you, you aren’t my friend.” The whale king was nervous, “Okay! I will be your friend; I will not trick you anymore!” “Are you sure?” asked Eric. “I am sure!” said King Amos. “Magic Wand, set Amos free!” said the fox. After that day, the fox and the whale were best friends.

Animal Fantasy

by Maureen Chiu

Instructed by Mr. van der Westhuizen

One day Mimi the dog, Kiki the cat, Papa the parrot, and Lolo the dolphin went to the ocean to play. They all were playing happily in the sand trying to build sandcastles. Mimi decided to climb onto a rock to look at the sandcastle she built but slipped and accidently fell into the ocean. All the other animals laughed thinking that she was only playing.

Little did they know that Mimi had a secret she never told anybody.

She couldn’t swim. Mimi tried to shout, “help me, help me” but the water got into her mouth and she drifted deep into the big, blue ocean.

Suddenly Papa took his beak out of his sandcastle-nest he was building to see if Mimi came back. When he didn’t see her he flew up into the sky looking for his friend. He saw Mimi drifting away in the cold ocean and flew down to ask for Lolo’s help. Lolo didn’t waste a second and swam to bring Mimi back.

Mimi’s body was full of ocean water and she didn’t breathe.

Kiki told them she can help with this emergency. She breathed in a

deep breath and breathed out with a big mew sound giving Mimi

one of her nine cat lives.

After 5 minutes Mimi woke up and everybody was very happy.

We all cheered because we liked to play baseball. We had two teams. One was Lamigo and the other one was Lion. I was on the Lamigo team. My friends Shelby and Leo were on the same team. My number was 31. Shelby’s number was 21. Leo’s number was 52. We won the game. I got a homerun. Leo got to third base. Shelby was the best. He had two homeruns. Our team won a big trophy. My Dream By Candice Yang Last night, I had a very special dream. There were a lot of animals in my dream. They could all fly. They were dancing around me. Just then, a lion king came out. He said “Welcome! I’m the king of the animal kingdom. Come inside and eat some food.” I went into the castle. They were fish, sushi, cake, salad and a lot more food. I ate and I felt very full. The lion king lent me a horse and carriage. On the animal kingdom’s roads, I saw all kinds of animals do their work. The sheep were fishing. The frogs were painting and the ducks were cooking. Wow, they even enjoyed a party. The rabbits were dancing. The monkeys were dancing. Everyone was dancing. They got closer and closer. Then, they turned into monsters. I started to scream. I quickly woke up. I think that dream was really special because it was a little scary and a little fun. My Brother By Clio Yang I have a big and annoying brother. His name is Ken. Sometimes, I don’t like him because he always teases me. But sometimes I think he’s a good brother. He makes me laugh every day. He plays with me. If I break something, he will try to repair it. I don’t know if my brother is good or bad. I only know I like him.

I sat on the sofa sadly. It was comfortable. Soon I felt better. Next, I saw two beds and I touched them. One was soft and the other was hard. The soft one was more expensive than the hard one. I asked my mom if I could buy the soft bed. “No,” she said. “Because you have one in your room already.” I went home sadly. I lied down on my bed. Actually, it felt soft. Why? Maybe what I have is better or maybe I was just tired. My Baseball Team By Leo Tsai The sun was up high in the sky. My father and I wore the sneakers to play baseball outside. My father and I were on the same team. We won the game. We were happy, but we were so tired. We went home, but we got lost. We got a map and we went home very late. When we got home, my mom gave us a lot of wonderful food. It was very yummy. We were very hungry and we ate very quickly. We also went to bed early. I think today was a good day in 2015. We were very happy. Tomorrow we have a baseball game too. I think we can play very well and we will win the game too. We will have a lot of fun. I think our team is the best team in New Taipei City. Bats By Charlene Hu Bats are nocturnal mammals that can fly. They have wings and are the only mammals that can fly. There are mega bats and micro bats. The smallest micro bat is the bumblebee bat. It is 3 centermeters long and weighs about 2 kilos. They are small and light because they need to fly easily. When they sleep or rest, they hang upside down. We can find bats in trees, buildings, caves, mines, and under bridges. They like dark places because they spend a lot of time sleeping. Some people are afraid of bats because they think they are like vampires. They think bats are evil creatures which will suck their blood. But actually, only vampire bats suck animals’ blood. Most bats eat fruit or insects.

The Three Brothers

There was a man who had three sons. Each of the sons wished to have the house after his father died. One day, their father said, “Go into the world and try each of you to learn a trade, and when you all come back, he who makes the best trade,

I will give him my house.” The eldest son wanted to be a blacksmith.

The second son wanted to be a barber. The youngest son wanted to be a fencing-master. Then each of them went his own way.

One day their father wanted them to come back. When they came back, the second son found a rabbit. He quickly removed the

rabbit’s hair without hurting its skin. After that, the eldest son quickly changed a horse’s shoes when the horse was still moving.

Then it was raining, the youngest son spun his sword over his head quickly and didn’t get wet at all. The man wanted to give the youngest son his house, but he said he wanted to live with his brothers. So they lived together happily.

Maybe it is a secret code.” said Grissom. “We can figure out, when we finish swimming! I am cold!” said Maria. When they finished swimming, they still didn’t know what it meant .The next day, Maria found another page. The next page said: The ghost cave! “The ghost cave!” Maria shouted and called Grissom, “The ghost cave is the most dangerous place in the world! Where is it?” asked Maria. ”Right behind your house. There is a mountain isn’t there?” said Grissom. “The ghost cave……..I know! I know what these dots mean! It means SOS in Morse code!’’ exclaimed Maria. ’’What! We need to save Peter in that cave?’’ Grissom roared. “We can do it! Trust me!’’ said Maria, crying. “Okay! Now let’s go.’’ On Sunday they went to the ghost cave. Grissom used his fire power to create some light. In the deeper part, there were two roads. They took the right road and at the bottom, they found a light blue box. Maria opened it, a ring flew onto her finger. Now she had ice power. "WOW” She said. She took the key beside the box and opened the door. Peter was in a cage inside. They went camping on a high mountain. The hike took a long time but the view from the mountain was spectacular. Wesley was short and charming. Everyone liked him a lot.

Unfortunately, he got sick before the graduation. So, he had to take some medicine. At the scary stroke of midnight, the moon was full and Wesley died, he died after he took his medicine. In the morning, everybody was scared because of the death of their classmate, but they all thought he died from natural causes.

A beautiful girl, Jill (who was ravishing, in spite of a scar on her face), was sitting still, eating her pleasant-tasting breakfast beside the dead body. She suddenly got up and started snickering maniacally in a corner. Allen had seen what happened last night. He saw Jill put something queer smelling in Wesley’s water.

Allen gently touched her shoulder. “Why did you do it?” ”He bullied me! No one cared. He scarred my face and never apologized! He had to pay!” Jill was very angry about the scar. She wanted Wesley to die .Jill’s revenge was to kill Wesley.

Instructed by Mornay Coetzee

Have you ever heard of the November Incident? If you hadn’t, let me tell you…..

“Nooooo!” A child’s screams came from the operating room. Suddenly the doctor came out. He was the oldest doctor in this hospital and his hair was a greying, sometimes he acted strangely, so nobody dared get close to him. This was November, many years ago. Years passed. Nina Chen was an odd woman, every time when other people saw her, she would be talking to the old doctor. Everybody was curious and one day a doctor asked Nina “Why are you always talking to the old doctor, he is a little scary, aren’t you frightened of him?” Nina answered “Sometimes he can be crazy, I guess, but he’s a great doctor, and I think he is actually really kind!” When she finished talking, she ran to her motorcycle and shouted out “Get away from me!” but there was nobody there. Everyone thought Nina had a mental illness, especially as she thought that the weird and cranky, old doctor was kind. Everyone in this hospital thought the old doctor was a terror, because he always disappeared to somewhere in the hospital, but no-one could find him. So they asked a detective to follow the old doctor. One day, two days … a week passed, nothing happened. Then on the last day, they found the detective. He was crazy, he kept saying, “I won’t do it! I don’t want to spy on the old doctor! Shhh! He will hear you. Ha-ha-haaaa! Am I crazy?” He became like a mentally ill person, everyone felt confused. Only Dr. Wang saw the corner of the old doctor’s mouth rise in a cunning smile, and a minute later Nina ran there and told the old doctor something, and then she ran back to her motorcycle and furiously rode away. At midnight Dr. Sam heard the sound of a scream “Haaaaah!” It was an old person’s voice, he guessed this was from the old doctor, but he didn’t know what it was, so he took the flashlight and went looking. Past the new laboratories down to the basement and the doors to the morgue. “Ahhhhh!” Dr. Sam shouted out once and then it was quiet. Everybody woke up, and Dr. Wang and Nurse Maggie walked out. They smelled the blood before they saw Dr. Sam lying on the floor, crimson blood coming out of his chest. He already didn’t show any signs of life. “Is he dead?” Nurse Maggie asked. ”Yes he’s dead, this is terrible!” Dr. Wang told Nurse Maggie. Together they carried the body of Dr. Sam to the hospital’s morgue. Ever since that time people died during November in this hospital. Everybody was scared, they all thought the old doctor was killing the people in this hospital, and then one night all of the people in the hospital were dead, except the old doctor and Nina. Suddenly Nina took a knife and stabbed the knife into the old doctor’s chest. ”Why…did… you… do… that... Nina?” the old doctor asked, his eyes searching for an answer from Nina. ”Why? Have you forgotten? Think back 30 years ago…” 30 years ago Nina’s dad had been ill, it was serious, and so Nina’s family brought him to this hospital. The old doctor helped treat Nina’s dad for his illness but because he was neglectful, Nina’s dad died, and her mom was so sad and she told Nina “Take great care of yourself Nina.” When Nina’s mom finished talking, her mom took a knife and committed suicide in front of little Nina. Nina shouted out “Noooo!” so at that time her heart told her when she grows up she will come back to kill all of the people in this hospital. All of the people who took the people she loved from her.

“Do you remember now? Hahahaha!”Nina told the old doctor, and she laughed!

The Houdini Box By Jessica Tseng, 5 Yellow Instructed by Mornay Coetzee When Olivia and Diana got back from their adventure in Europe, the first thing they wanted to do is to meet their best friend - Alice, and tell her about all of their adventures. “Hi, Alice”, said Olivia and Diana. “Hi! Can you wait a moment?

I have to get something from my room.” said Alice in a hurried voice, then she ran to her room. Suddenly they heard a weird, muffled sound. “Help! Help!

Aaahh!”. “That was Alice screaming! Let’s go and find her!” said Diana. They went to her room and a magical box lay there sparkling like a star, twinkling!

“Wow! What is this?” asked Diana, as her eyes swept over the magical box again.

The sound came again. “Help! Help!” This time the box was twinkling like a red ruby pulsating with light like a beating heart. “Let’s jump into it”, suggested

Olivia, then they jumped into the box. They were very excited. They landed in a strange, foggy place. There was no one. They saw an enormous giant, big, footprint on the ground. “Boom! Boom!” “Help!” “Oh no, it is a T-Rex!” they shouted. “We’ve travelled back in time!” They grabbed Alice and quickly ran out of the magician’s box. “It is a Houdini box!” said Olivia. “Why do you even have this box, Alice?” they asked. “When I last saw it, it was in my room!” said Alice. A weird sound came again. The lid flew open and a handsome dark-haired man stood up. “Hi, I am Harry Houdini, I need your help, but you need to come inside the box”, said Houdini. “Ok, let’s go inside!” said Alice. Their adventures were about to start again!

The Lost Scroll By Mimi Chen, 5 Yellow Instructed by Mornay Coetzee

“Click” the door opened as the dark shadows went by like two black cats. The dark had covered everything. “Did we get the scroll?” a man whispered. “Yes, but I can’t find the……”Suddenly, a shot of bright light lit up the room! “Got to go.” Another man muttered.

“Finally back for the recipe!” Sang the witch joyfully as her long blond hair billowed behind her like a spider’s web. The witch walked to the table and got the spell. “Oh no! Where are the scrolls?” I thought I put it here last night!” the witch gulped. “It must be somewhere in here.” An hour passed, now she was getting more and more furious. She thought someone had stolen it. Every witch and wizard wanted her magic spell because it can make their own magic more powerful. “My family defeated the competition so I can have the spell scroll. But now someone has stolen it!” the witch hissed resentfully. ”I will find out who stole it and make them die!” The witch vowed to take the spell back. But years went by and she still hadn’t found it. When she was too old to move around, she wrote a letter to her family to help her to finish the vow.

After the witch died, her granddaughter, Alexis continued this vow. She was a smart girl and everyone liked her. After months, she stopped pursuing the spell. She no longer cared about it. Soon she started to make friends outside. She had a best friend called Linda. She liked her because she never lied to her. They told their secrets to each other. One day Linda whispered, “Let me tell you a secret. My dad doesn’t want me to tell anyone about it, but because you are my best friend, I will tell you.” Alexis wondered what it was. Then Linda whispered again. “Our family has a real magic spell that was stolen long ago from a real witch!” First Alexis was really proud that she had a friend like that who also believed in magic. But just then, she felt something was wrong. Then she remembered something that her mom had told her about her grandma, the spell and the vow. Her pride in her friend had now become empty and worrisome. She hoped that it wasn’t true. But she didn’t tell Linda. When she went home, she felt very lonely. She muttered the words again and again. Thinking of the people who have died in her family for this. She didn’t want the family to be disappointed, but she also didn’t want her best friend to die either. She felt remorseful and confused, like her heart was ripped in two, dripping blood. She thought about it for days. One night, she had a dream. In the dream, her grandma told her she must get the spell back and kill Linda, because no-one who remembers the secret spell may live.

The next day, she decided to act on the dream. She thought of many things. Until she finally found an answer. But she could never tell Linda. She could use a memory potion! Linda would forget the spell, but also their friendship. Alexis was ashamed that she had to do this to Linda. But it was the only way of not hurting her. Finally she got the spell back, but she lost her best friend!

5 Blue The Worst Thing at LeoFoo Village By Roy Liu Instructed by Jimmy Kao

The worst thing today was the 360-degree car ride. It was so scary and my classmates were too afraid to ride it. I had eaten a lot of food on the bus so I thought I might throw up at the top of the ride. I decided to line up and take the risk even though I was a little afraid. I also wanted to go to the restroom because I was so nervous. It was my turn, I sat down and the ride controller came and pushed the safety bar down. The safety bar hit my legs and it hurt a little. Then the ride began, I wanted to get down, but I couldn’t…It was too late! The car began to move slowly and I clinched the safety bar with my hands very tightly. It began to speed up and went back and forth almost to 180 degrees. I had a strange thought that when the car goes 360 degrees I would fall out and die. No! I won’t fall down. Next thing I knew my legs were in the air. I released my hands from the death grip I had on the safety bar. My body fell forward and it smashed down onto the safety bar. I realized I had done something very dangerous. If the safety bar was broken, I would have flown out from the car, but it stopped me from falling out. I was so happy that I didn’t fly out. The ride had finally stopped, I got off the ride and I knew I was finally safe. I thanked God I didn’t throw up, wet my pants or die. The 360-degree car ride was the most dangerous thing I had ever ridden. I don’t want to ride that ride ever again. NEVER! It was too dangerous for me. I think the volcano one is much better than the 360-degree car ride. I will never ride such a dangerous ride again. I will only ride rides like the volcano one.

Discovery By Stephanie Shen, 5 Blue

When I was young, I believed that dinosaurs still existed. Also, I believed that some animals evolved from children. My dad told me many mysteries from the dinosaur period. From that day, I believed that dinosaurs are real.

I was scared and excited. I had never seen or heard Sauropods roaming all over the park. I wanted to know if there was a huge dinosaur living under the desert, but I only saw a fossil. It was a Saltopus fossil that appeared 65 million years ago.

“I guess there were never giant dinosaurs in the world,” I said. That’s when I believed that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

The Birthday Present By Celine Chu, 5 Blue

“Ding Dong! Ding Dong! The doorbell screamed. I opened the door.

“Happy Birthday!” said Jill.

“Thank you! But....today isn’t my birthday.” I said confusingly.

“Oops! It’s okay! You can still take it.” Jill said with a sly smile.

“Let me open it.” I said.

“Open it when I’m gone.” Jill said.

“Fine!” I said.

“Bye! I’d better go to the meeting.” said Jill.

“Good-bye! And thanks for the gift!” I said.

When she was gone, I opened the box. A frog jumped on me!

“GROSS!” I cried. Then I saw Jill and Monika laughing at me outside.

A Gift to Nature By Cathy Ho, 5 Blue Instructed by Mr. Jimmy Kao

Help saving the earth is very important. What made me decide to protect nature is something strange that happened to me last summer. I was at Grandpa’s house which is in the mountains. I walked by a river and I noticed a squirrel standing by the riverside looking down at a fish in the water.” That’s weird. Do squirrels eat fish?” I whispered to myself. I walked closer to them. All of a sudden, I caught a sight of the squirrel’s mouth moving. So was the fish’s. I looked at them again, they were talking. “No way!” I gasped. Their voice was like a girl’s voice. I hid behind a bush and listened to them

“What can I do now?” cried the fish, “Humans are polluting my home with dirty oil.” “They destroyed my home by cutting down trees, too.” said the squirrel. “I hope Poseidon will come and save us.” said the fish with a smile on her face. “No, he won’t. He lives in the sea.” said the squirrel rolling her eyes. “Whatever. Will Pan come?” asked the fish. “I don’t know, but humans are evil.” said the squirrel. “No, we’re not!” I jumped out of the bush and shouted. They seemed to be shocked. The squirrel stepped back with a frightened look on her face. “Don’t be afraid. Not all the humans are evil. I’ll help you to protect your homes. Don’t be afraid.” I said in a soft voice. “Really?” the fish asked in a tiny voice. “Yes.” I promised. “We’ll trust you.” the squirrel said as she ragged a pine cone to the ground in front of me. “We believe in you.” after they said it the squirrel ran as the fish swam away.

I picked up the pine cone. “What had just happened?” I whispered. Then I started my way back.

The Purple Dress By Eileen Chou (6 Zhi) I had just finished my dinner so I wanted to go for a walk. I went to the park. I saw a beautiful purple dress and a cute kitten on a park bench. The kitten was asleep. The dress was so pretty. I couldn’t help it but wear it. Then I started to dance. I couldn’t control myself. I kept dancing and dancing. I danced all around the park, so I shouted for help. The kitten heard me and woke up. Surprisingly, she came to help me. She ran to me and scratched my dress. As she tore the dress into pieces, it began glowing brighter than the sun, and flew away as it turned into a butterfly. The kitten saved me and it went back home with me. As we were walking home, I saw the purple dress again. Maybe it is waiting for another girl to wear it. AAnnnnaa’’ss DDrreeaamm By Annie Shen (6 Zhi) It was a cold winter day in 2003. Typhoon Soudelor was the strongest typhoon since Typhoon Vongfong and had severe impacts in Taiwan – some of which were felt by the students in 6 RED.

The night before Soudelor made landfall, everyone in my neighborhood was terrified and franticly rushing about making preparations. As the wind and rain came, I knew this typhoon was not the same as the others I had experienced – it was VERY powerful. The weather bureau classified Soudelor as a “super typhoon” because of its intensity. I began by closing all of the windows and taking the clothes down from our balcony. I thought we should tape the windows, but the wind was too powerful. The sound of the wind was driving me crazy and it sent a chill down my spine. I kept thinking that the windows would break, but they did not. The following day, the government announced school and work closures. I was thrilled that we would not have to attend classes and it was a beautiful day. However, my excitement soon subsided as I saw everything we would have to clean. I know it is very important to prepare for natural disasters, but there are some things you just cannot prepare for. Cherry Su 6 RED Instructed by Josh Thompson

Typhoons are not the only natural disasters students of 6 RED have experienced. Some have vivid memories of earthquakes they experienced at a very young age.

When I was five years old, I experienced my first earthquake. I was still in bed when the shaking started, and in my dreams I could feel something was not quite right. As the shaking became more violent, I woke up and immediately ran to the seventh floor of my apartment building. My mother greeted me and pulled me close – she was worried I might be hurt. She held a pillow over my head and told me to be very careful.

My grandfather – who was on the first floor – wanted to come upstairs to check on us. He was quite worried about us since we lived on one of the upper floors of the building. He climbed into the elevator and franticly pushed the button for our floor. As the doors shut, the earthquake shook with TREMENDOUS force, stopping the elevator and trapping my grandfather inside.

When the shaking finally stopped, the elevator doors opened and my grandfather breathed a sigh of relief. My mother thought it would be a good time to teach me about earthquakes and what causes them. She also taught me about earthquake safety and said my grandfather should not have used the elevator.

Because of my experience and the knowledge my mother passed on, I am not as afraid of earthquakes as I once was. I am able to stay calm in the face of danger because I am prepared and know exactly what to do in order to stay safe.

Angela Huang 6 RED Instructed by Josh Thompson

Students in 6 RED are no strangers to natural disasters. Earthquakes and typhoons are both common occurrences.

When Soudelor came, I knew we would be in for a very terrifying and dangerous storm. Soudelor was a very powerful typhoon with strong winds and torrential rain. The weather report said it would be devastating for older buildings in the mountains and on the coast. To prepare for Soudelor’s arrival, my father and I took down all of the plants hanging on our balcony. We knew that the high wind might cause them to fall on pedestrians below and that it would be dangerous to leave them outside. When the typhoon arrived, I saw electrical wires flailing in the wind and heard the sounds of electricity crackling in the air. As amazing as it was, I knew this meant trouble – luckily a utility crew arrived shortly after the cable fell to make repairs. Willy Li

Once Upon A Time - My Favorite Soap by Elysha Hsiung, 6 Yellow Instructed by Mrs. Lolit Chen

Once upon a time…… as you know this is how a fairy tale often begins. You might have heard about the fairy tale characters - Prince Charming, Snow White, Evil Queen, Rumpelstiltskin…..and many more. They tickle the imagination and bring you to unknown places, often in far, far away kingdoms. My fellow sixth graders, you must think that fairy tales are boring. However, there is one television series that might just change your mind. That’s the soap called Once Upon A Time. You should really watch this interesting TV series. I can almost see you getting inquisitive about what happens next after you watch one episode.

My favorite part is when the Mad Hatter says that we should never leave or give up our family because of fame and gain. (Remember the Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland?) Giving up your family is really a horrible thing to do. This is especially so when your family really loves you and believes in you. (By the way, you might ask, “Does the Mad Hatter have a family?” I should tell you that in this story, he does. He has a beautiful and lovely daughter called Grace. But the wife died. Oops- sorry, that was a spoiler!)

When you are watching this program, you will be

delighted, astonished, or even burst into tears ! This is a brilliant story in that it mixes the traditional fairy tales with the modern reality of life. The stories give the feeling that “once upon a time” is once again upon us who grew up with fairy tales, but this time with all the characters together in one wonderful story.

Biking, My Family’s Favorite Recreation By Austin Liang, 6 Yellow Instructed by Mrs. Lolit Chen My family always goes out to engage in leisure activities on weekends, and our favorite form of recreation is biking. Before we set out, we prepare things to bring like sandwiches, cookies, drinks and other stuff. After that, we are ready to enjoy our ride! There are lots of places we go to ride our bikes, but we always choose to pass by the riverside. You can see the beautiful landscape along the river, including lush grassland on the mountains surrounding it. I feel the warm sunlight spray on my body in summer. At this time of the year, the chirping of birds seems so sweet, the trees that cover us look so green, and the river appears quite blue. Taking all these in was like my heart has just eaten lots of sweets, and that feels awesome. In winter, the bright feathers of birds add a little color to the river. I also enjoy the damp cool air blowing on our faces. Watching and experiencing all of these make me so relaxed. After riding for a while, we will stop the bikes and sit down on the soft grass to enjoy the food we brought. We laugh and chat. Every moment we have is fun. Sometimes we spend the whole afternoon enjoying this wonderful moment, and we tend to forget the time to go home. I feel extremely happy in every bike ride with my family. I treasure our being together and sharing stories with one another. This is the best thing in life for me. As the saying goes, “A family that plays together stays together.” Our bike riding activity creates lots of memories and develops even closer relationships among our family members.

Prison Life by Oscar Chen, 6Ye llow

Instructed by Mrs. Lolit Chen

Every person is the same in this world. No one should be mistreated or harmed by another, but a few people just do not get this idea. They kill, they rob, and they do all sorts of appalling things. So, they end up spending their whole lives or at least parts of their whole lives in prison. In this story, I shall tell you about a prisoner spending his entire life in a prison because he did something wrong. One day, in a dark place in a prison, a truck full with prisoners comes. Among those prisoners, one has killed and robbed, and he plans to escape……but he’ll be disappointed!! Every day, the prisoners have to work, work, and work. “They must pay for their crimes,” the warden says. Every prisoner obeys the rules in this place, all except the one that has killed and robbed. The inmates are given responsibilities, and every prisoner follows, except the one that has killed and robbed. It might seem that the prisoner is just angry, but he believes he is right in what he did and refuses to cooperate. A few days after he arrives, he still doesn’t want to cooperate. No one can do anything about it. At night, he always tries to escape. And every time he gets caught, he will always try to burn the prison down. He repeats this behavior many times until one day he finally gives in. He starts to work and cooperate with the prison guards. Time flies. Forty years have passed, and the same old prisoner is still there. He is still working in the same prison. The man, which was once young and strong, is now old and weak. He is now seventy-five years old. His life is coming to an end, but he still has the thought that he is innocent. But he can’t do anything now. He doesn’t have much time left. So a lot of his fellow inmates tell him to relax and enjoy the last few years. Two years later, he dies. He has spent most of his life in prison. So, what does this teach us? If we do not want to waste our life behind bars, we shouldn’t misbehave or take the law in our own hands.
