I am thrilled to welcome you to Hillel International’s fi rst annual Global Assembly. I am excited for what the next days will bring, and grateful that you could join us to participate in this important convening. The decision to hold a professional gathering is not a new one—years ago, Hillel professionals would gather annually to meet one another and create the vision for the year ahead. When I started my tenure as President of Hillel International, I knew that we must bring back this type of convening. This year, we gather for the fi rst time as a truly global movement, and notably, the largest gathering of Hillel professionals in history. This Hillel International: Global Assembly gives us an opportunity to refl ect on how we have grown in the past year, to celebrate the great work that many of our colleagues have been doing on campus and in the community, to think critically and thoughtfully about our goals for the year ahead, and most importantly to learn from each other. While we are all together, I encourage you to meet with many of your peers and share the exciting activities that are taking place on campus. Informal and interpersonal education has proven to be a critical source of learning, and Hillel International: Global Assembly has included a number of peer-to-peer networking sessions for that very purpose. I cannot wait to begin our time together in Orlando, and I look forward to seeing many of you over the course of the next few days. MEASURING EXCELLENCE Summary of Student Outcomes Findings | 2016 I. Introduction We are pleased to share highlights from the 2016 Measuring Excellence Student Outcomes Survey. This overview covers the main findings that emerged from the analysis of the survey which was fielded in February 2016 at 46 North American Hillels on a total of 79 campuses, and highlights of the methodology utilized in analysis.1 Collectively, we received over 13,000 responses to the survey of which 10,079 were Jewish undergraduates. This is the second round of Hillel’s student outcomes survey which was initially piloted in November 2014 on the campuses of 18 Hillels. This survey is one of four instruments used as part of Hillel's Measuring Excellence program. Other tools include an employee engagement survey, a student engagement report, and a financial/ fundraising report. Hillel International worked with Rosov Consulting to design, field, analyze and understand the findings detailed below.2 Hillel’s student survey aims to measure the extent Jewish students are achieving a designated set of outcomes articulated in Hillel’s Drive to Excellence , by a taskforce comprised of Executive Directors from a diverse group of local Hillels, Hillel International staff, lay leaders as well as funders. The survey items were designed to assess these outcomes. Using factor analysis 3, the survey items were grouped to create the following four outcome areas: 1. Appreciate Judaism’s Centrality in their Lives (Judaism’s Centrality) 2. Growing Knowledge and Connection to Jewish Life (Growing Knowledge) 3. Have Strong Jewish Social Networks (Social Networks) 4. Israel Engagement and Connection (Israel Engagement) 1 This number counts campuses with 10+ respondents. -

Reviewed by Evelyn Torton Beck, Women’s Studies Professor Emerita, University of Maryland, College Park, USA Even more than I had anticipated, reading and rereading this 240 page volume of Bridges (possibly the last print copy of the journal) was not only a pleasure, but a deeply satisfying experience; unique in its format, it is among the best that Bridges has produced in its twenty one years of publication. The issue is constructed around a series of conversations between previous contributors to the journal. While some contributors deliberately chose partners they knew personally or with whose work they were familiar, others were paired by the editor; but however they ended up together, the pairings worked well. Conveying the richness, honesty, and spontaneity of these conversations (whose themes overlap and intertwine) proved to be a challenge. How was I to convey the depth and complexity of these thirty- five separate essays (and twice that many voices), which continued to speak long after I had closed the volume? Not surprisingly, these exchanges combine the personal with the political, the particular with the universal. The conversation partners include poets, novelists and visual artists; rabbis, modern orthodox, secular and atheist; academics and community workers; young and old; Jews by choice and born Jews; Sephardic and Ashkenazi, Caucasians and African-Americans; lesbian, heterosexual and queer Jews; able-bodied and physically challenged, reaching across multiple lines of linguistic, geographic, ethnic and racial differences. -

Through A Novel Idea, we’ve trekked across the rivers and streams of Oregon with David James Duncan’s classic The River Why, journeyed to the barren and heart-breaking lands of Afghanistan through Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, trucked our way through America and Mexico with María Amparo Escandón’s González and Daughter Trucking Co., and relived the great days of Bill Bowerman’s Oregon with Kenny Moore’s book Bowerman and the Men of Oregon. This year, we enter The World to Come with award-winning author Dara Horn and are enchanted by this extraordinary tale of mystery, folklore, theology, and history. A month-long series of events kicks off on Saturday, April 1 26 with the Obsidian Opera performing songs from Fiddler on the Roof. More than 20 programs highlight this year’s book at the public libraries in Deschutes County including: Russian Jewish immigrant experience in Oregon, the artist Marc Chagall, Jewish baking, Judaism 101, art workshops, a Synagogue tour, and book discussions—all inspired from the book’s rich tale. -
