SPECTRUM SPORTSNET ANNOUNCES LOS ANGELES LAKERS BROADCAST SCHEDULE FOR RESTART OF 2019-20 NBA SEASON SportsNet to Air Eight Seeding Games and Three Scrimmages El Segundo, CA – July 15, 2020 – Spectrum SportsNet today announced its broadcast schedule for the Lakers restart of the 2019-20 NBA season. SportsNet will air 11 games - eight “seeding games” and three scrimmages - beginning with the Lakers scrimmage vs. the Dallas Mavericks on July 23 at 4:00 p.m. PST. SportsNet’s coverage of the seeding games tips-off on July 30 when the Lakers face the Clippers at 6:00 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. All eight seeding games will air live on SportsNet, including four games broadcast exclusively on the network in Southern California. SportsNet will exclusively air the Lakers games against the Toronto Raptors (Aug. 1), Utah Jazz (Aug. 3), Oklahoma City Thunder (Aug. 5) and Indiana Pacers (Aug. 8). Lakers play-by-play announcer Bill Macdonald, analyst Stu Lantz and reporter Mike Trudell will call the remaining eight games of the regular season, along with Chris McGee, Allie Clifton, Mike Bresnahan and NBA Hall of Famer “Big Game” James Worthy providing pre and postgame coverage – all from the SportsNet studios in El Segundo. We the North? Race, Nation and the Multicultural Politics of Toronto’s First NBA Championship Funké Aladejebi, Kristi A. Allain, Rhonda C. George & Ornella Nzindukiyimana1 Abstract The Toronto Raptors’ 2019 NBA championship win, a first for the franchise and for a Canadian team, “turned hockey country into basketball nation” (CBC Radio 2020). Canadians’ growing embrace of the team and the sport seemed to point to a growing celebration of Blackness within the nation. However, we problematize the 2019 championship win to tell a more expansive story about how sport and national myths conceal truths about race and belonging in Canada. We explore two particular cases, the We the North campaign and the media coverage of Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia, to highlight the contradictory ways that the Raptors coverage mobilized symbols of the North and multiculturalism in order to produce the team as quintessentially Canadian and rebrand basketball for Canadian audiences. We further explore how these stark contradictions manifest in the racialized policing of basketball courts in the Greater Toronto Area. These cases demonstrate that the celebrations of the Raptors and basketball not only continued to police racialized bodies, but also ensured their inclusion was contingent on the maintenance of the status quo.
