It is because the legal process is continuing to analyse each athlete implicated on a case-by-case basis. All those to have tested positive have, however, been barred from taking part at Rio 2016 with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) claiming this fulfills their primary obligation to stop drug cheats participating here. A total of 98 positives emerged out of over 1,200 re-tested samples from both Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Only two of these have so far been officially confirmed and stripped of medals by the IOC. Both are female weightlifters, Ukraine's under 58 kilograms London 2012 bronze medallist Yulia Kalina and Turkey's under 48kg Beijing 2008 silver medallist Sibel Özkan. "The issue of when they are fully sanctioned will happen later," IOC Presidential spokesman Mark Adams told insidethegames today. "Our aim is to stop them [those implicated] coming to Rio." He added that it is "very unlikely" that any more cases will be confirmed during Rio 2016. This is primarily for logistical reasons, as all those involved will be so busy during the Olympics. Many of the cases have been announced publicly, either by National Olympic Committees or by International Federations.

    Olympic Weightlifting Olympic weightlifting, or weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic programme in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Qualifying – the road to Rio Qualification is based on the results of the 2014 and 2015 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships and the 2016 Continental Championships. No more than six men and four women can qualify per country, with a maximum of two athletes per event. Brazil, as host country, is guaranteed five quota places, three for men and two for women. No New Zealand weightlifters have qualified for Rio as yet. The best chance for qualification for our weightlifters is via the Oceania qualifying event being held in Fiji in early 2016. At this event qualifying is based on team results, not individuals. Teams must place in the top three for women to gain one Olympic spot, and men must place in the top four to gain a spot. A women’s team has seven members and a men’s team has eight. If the New Zealand teams are successful at this qualification event in gaining places at the Rio Games, then our selectors will choose one male weightlifter and one female weightlifter to go (in agreement with the NZOC). Rio 2016 Weightlifting When: Competition will take place over 10 days from 7-14 August 2016 (with no competition on 15 August). Where: Riocentro – Pavilion 2. Men will compete in eight events based on athlete weight categories, from under 56kg to the super- heavyweights at over 105kg.

    Kazakh Weightlifting Federation©s Chief Coach Steps Down After Doping Scandal Alexei Ni, the chief coach of the Kazakh weightlifting federation, has stepped down from his position after the doping scandal that recently engulfed the sport. Ni helmed the national weightlifting team of Kazakhstan for over 20 years since 1994. Kazakh weightlifters participated in six Olympics Games under his guidance. The International Olympic Committee stripped weightlifter Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstan of two gold medals Ð one each from the Beijing and London Games, both in the 94-kilogram class. Ilyin is believed to be the first summer Olympic athlete to lose two gold medals for doping. Szymon Kolecki of Poland is likely to get Ilyin©s weightlifting gold from Beijing while Saeid Mohammedpour of Iran could take Ilyin©s 2012 gold. Three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal were stripped of their medals in the latest round of positive doping retests from the 2008 and 2012 Summer Games. The IOC announced seven athletes from Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan were retroactively disqualified after they tested positive for steroids in a reanalysis of their stored doping samples. Ilyin©s sanction was announced recently by the Kazakhstan Olympic Committee. In a statement, the IOC said Ilya Ilyin tested positive for Stanozolol on his Beijing sample and for Stanozolol and Turinabol in his London test. One of the biggest names in weightlifting, Ilyin said he was "shaken" and "in shock" at the news. Ilyin, the only athlete to win two Olympic gold medals for Kazakhstan, said he was considering an appeal.
