Ravel (1875-1937) FRENCH CONCERTOS From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Edited by Stephen Ellis Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Born in Ciboure, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Aquitaine. He studied piano as a child and later was trained at the Paris Conservatory initially by Eugène Anthiôme and Charles de Bériot but later on more importantly in counterpoint by André Gédalge and composition by Gabriel Fauré. His musical career was devoted almost exclusively to composition and he excelled at whatever genre he worked in, from opera and ballet to wonderful creations for orchestra, instrumental combinations, voice and, especially, the piano. Ravel wrote no symphonies but the ballet "Daphnis et Chloé" is listed here because Ravel called it a "Symphonie Choréographique." His larger orchestral works written for the concert hall are his Piano Concerto in G, Piano Concerto in D for the Left Hand, Rapsodie Espagnole and Boléro. Most of his other famous orchestral pieces are Ravel's own orchestrations of his piano works. Though his music is markedly different from that of Debussy, the two are considered the twin giants of French musical impressionism. • ABSTRACT Final
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE BREADTH OF CHOPIN’S INFLUENCE ON FRENCH AND RUSSIAN PIANO MUSIC OF THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES Jasmin Lee, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Bradford Gowen School of Music Frederic Chopin’s legacy as a pianist and composer served as inspiration for generations of later composers of piano music, especially in France and Russia. Singing melodies, arpeggiated basses, sensitivity to sonorities, the use of rubato, pedal points, and the full range of the keyboard, plus the frequent use of character pieces as compositional forms characterize Chopin’s compositional style. Future composers Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, Nikolai Medtner, Gabriel Faure, and Maurice Ravel each paid homage to Chopin and his legacy by incorporating and enhancing aspects of his writing style into their own respective works. Despite the disparate compositional trajectories of each of these composers, Chopin’s influence on the development of their individual styles is clearly present. Such influence served as one of the bases for Romantic virtuoso works that came to predominate the late 19th and early 20th century piano literature. This dissertation was completed by performing selected works of Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, Gabriel Faure, Nikolai Medtner, and Maurice Ravel, in three recitals at the Gildenhorn Recital Hall in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center of the University of Maryland. Compact Disc recordings of the recital are housed

RICCARDO MUTI New World Records 80370 CHARLES DUTOIT THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA VINCENT PERSICHETTI Symphony for Strings Piano Concerto ROBERT TAUB, piano During the last four decades of his life, the name of Vincent Persichetti came to signify musicianship of a comprehensiveness virtually unmatched among American composers. Today his influence continues, reaching young pianists nurtured on his Sonatinas and Little Piano Book, school musicians who first experience serious contemporary music through his works for band, church choirs who turn to his Hymns and Responses for the Church Year as an inexhaustible resource, young composers who find his classic textbook Twentieth Century Harmony an indispensable tool, and soloists and conductors for whom his sonatas, concertos, and symphonies stand among the masterworks of American music. Throughout his life Persichetti encouraged healthy, creative participation in music at all levels of sophistication, while shunning dogmas that advocate one compositional approach at the expense of others. Persichetti was born in Philadelphia in 1915, and remained a lifelong resident of that city. At the age of five, he learned to play the piano, organ, and double bass at the Combs Conservatory. He also studied theory and composition under Russell King Miller, who became his most influential teacher. Immershing himself in music while in his teens, Persichetti memorized the scores to be performed weekly by the Philadelphia Orchestra and then attended the concerts to compare his mental realizations with the actual sounds. Composition was an integral part of his study from the start, as was exposure to other arts. Persichetti attended art school during his adolescence, and sculpture continued to be an important creative outlet for him until his death in 1987.
