ISBN 978-951-51-7132-0 (PDF) Unigrafia Helsinki 2021 ABSTRACT This study examines how fandom connects with the current religious landscape where people can build meaning and communities through stories and practices that they choose for themselves. The media and popular culture have a strong presence in people’s everyday lives, and they affect how people understand themselves and their reality. This multidisciplinary study combines the study of religions and fan studies to examine how people use popular culture to answer existential questions and needs that have usually been associated with the cultural realm of religion. This study concentrates on the everyday meaning-making of fans and how it can interplay with religious myths and rituals. This thesis answers the following research questions: What kinds of characteristics of myth and ritual can be found in the fandom of vampire-themed television shows? What do these characteristics tell us about the relationship between religion and popular culture in our contemporary culture? This study examines the fandom of vampire-themed television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), True Blood (2008–2014) and Vampire Diaries (2009–2017). I chose this topic because these shows were extremely popular, and because they also connected with the tradition of vampire folklore by discussing cultural values and norms. My research material consists of fan discussions that I collected from open access online fan forums and fan sites. I used netnography as a method of collecting my research material. I concentrated on the discussions in which fans talked about the meaning of these shows in their everyday life or used the shows to discuss societal values and norms. As an analysis method, I used qualitative content analysis. This method allowed me to analyse the vast body of material and find the central themes that connected these fandoms with the concepts of myth and ritual. To understand the connections between myths and fandom, I used William G. Doty’s concept of polyfunctional myth (2000) as a theoretical basis for my analysis. Through Doty’s theory, I constructed a myth model that concentrates on the metaphors and heroic models that fans identify with in the vampire shows. My 1 analysis shows how these television shows function as myths to fans in two ways: 1) The characters and storylines are read as metaphors for reality and people’s everyday lives 2) Fans see some of the characters as heroic models that they can, and want to, emulate in real life. I analyse fan practices through the concept of fan rituals, which I have adapted from Johanna Sumiala’s understanding of media rituals (2010). Fan practices function as communal fan rituals that connect people with imagined communities via the media, but also with communities formed by close friends and family. The communal aspects of rituals are central in fan rituals, but fans also use viewing practices to break free from their everyday life and find new strength. Part of fan rituals are also so-called “the show changed my life” stories that fans share online. These stories express how fans have given meaning to the shows and fandom as something that helped them get through life crises and hard times. Analysing fan discussions through the concepts of myth and ritual has provided a way of identifying significant connections between contemporary religiosity and fandom. These connections express how current cultural reality provides people with more options in choosing ways to understand their reality and make it personally meaningful. The myths and rituals that are connected with fandom show how people can use popular culture to reflect on cultural values and norms, find heroic models to follow, break free from everyday troubles, create and maintain communities, and find support and solace in life crises. This study shows how both fandom and religion can have similar roles in our current cultural reality that emphasises personal choices and meanings. Studying fandom through myths and fan rituals provides important perspectives on the profound meanings popular culture can have in people’s everyday lives. JOHDANTO 1.1. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

  • The Walt Disney Silly Symphony Cartoons and American Animation in the 1930S
Exploration in Imagination: The Walt Disney Silly Symphony Cartoons and American Animation in the 1930s By Kendall Wagner In the 1930s, Americans experienced major changes in their lifestyles when the Great Depression took hold. A feeling of malaise gripped the country, as unemployment rose, and money became scarce. However, despite the economic situation, movie attendance remained strong during the decade.1 Americans attended films to escape from their everyday lives. While many notable live-action feature-length films like The Public Enemy (1931) and It Happened One Night (1934) delighted Depression-era audiences, animated cartoon shorts also grew in popularity. The most important contributor to the evolution of animated cartoons in this era was Walt Disney, who innovated and perfected ideas that drastically changed cartoon production.2 Disney expanded on the simple gag-based cartoon by implementing film technologies like synchronized sound and music, full-spectrum color, and the multiplane camera. With his contributions, cartoons sharply advanced in maturity and professionalism. The ultimate proof came with the release of 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the culmination of the technical and talent development that had taken place at the studio. The massive success of Snow White showed that animation could not only hold feature-length attention but tell a captivating story backed by impressive imagery that could rival any live-action film. However, it would take nearly a decade of experimentation at the Disney Studios before a project of this size and scope could be feasibly produced. While Mickey Mouse is often solely associated with 1930s-era Disney animation, many are unaware that alongside Mickey, ran another popular series of shorts, the Silly Symphony cartoons.

Through the seventy- five years of Fantasia's history, it has spawned multiple re-releases in both the domestic and public sphere, as well as a sequel film, video game, and series of live performances. As such, Fantasia is a dynamic commodity which has remained culturally relevant amongst audiences. From this relevance, pedagogical value can be derived; the film introduces modes of listening such as Michel Chion's audio-viewing and introductions to the role of narrative in Western art music. Utilizing secondary sources for production history, newspaper reviews, and (auto)ethnography, this project delves into reception history of Fantasia as a means to understand the cultural contexts in which Disney's project can simultaneously exist as a populist commodity and pedagogical text.

  • Animated Images and Animated Objects: Reflexively And
Animated images and animated objects: Reflexively and intertextually transgressive mimesis Abstract This article explores how animation can manipulate a reflexive intertextual framework which relates to religious prohibitions on artistic mimesis that might replicate and threaten God’s creative act. Animated films are most intertextually reflexive, in these terms, when they narrativise the movement of diegetic objects from another medium which also transgresses God’s prohibition: sculpture. In the media of both sculpture and animation the act of mimesis is transgressive in fundamentally ontological terms, staging the illusion of creation by either replicating the form of living creatures in three-dimensional sculpture, or by giving the impression of animating the inanimate in two-dimensional film. Both media can generate artworks that directly comment on these processes by using narratives about the creative act which not only produce the illusion of life, but which produce diegetically real life itself. Such artworks are intensely reflexive, and engage with one another in an intertextual manner. The article traces this process from the pre-historic and early historic religious, mythic and 1 philosophical meditations which structure ideas about mimetic representations of life, via Classical and Early Modern sculpture, through a radical proto-feminist revision crystallising around the monstrous consequences of the transgression in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and finally into film and more specifically animation. The article culminates with a relatively detailed account of these processes in the Toy Story franchise, which is a heightened example of how animation can stage a narrative in which ostensibly inanimate sculpted toys move of their own volition, and of how this double form of animation does this reflexively, by ontologically performing the toys’ animating act.

  • Fragile Bodies in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series
Cultivating Perspectives: Fragile Bodies in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series by Heather Simeney MacLeod A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Heather Simeney MacLeod, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation project exposes the troubling engagement with classifications of materiality within text and bodies in Stephenie Meyer’s contemporary American vampire narrative, the Twilight Series (2005-2008). It does so by disclosing the troubling readings inherent in genre; revealing problematic representations in the gendered body of the protagonist, Bella Swan; exposing current cultural constructions of the adolescent female; demonstrating the nuclear structure of the family as inextricably connected to an iconic image of the trinity— man, woman, and child; and uncovering a chronicle of the body of the racialized “other.” That is to say, this project analyzes five persistent perspectives of the body—gendered, adolescent, transforming, reproducing, and embodying a “contact zone”—while relying on the methodologies of new feminist materialisms, posthumanism, postfeminism and vampire literary criticism. These conditions are characteristic of the “genre shift” in contemporary American vampire narrative in general, meaning that current vampire fiction tends to shift outside of the boundaries of its own classification, as in the case of Meyer’s material, which is read by a diverse readership outside of its Young Adult categorization. As such, this project closely examines the vampire exposed in Meyer’s remarkably popular text, as well as key texts published in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, such as Joss Whedon’s television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Alan Ball’s HBO series True Blood (2009-2014), Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark (1987) and Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987).
