Anthroposophical Society in the Western Cape, Sophia House – 18 Firfield Rd, Plumstead 021 7619600 – [email protected] Quarterly Issue – Spring 2013 SPECIAL EDITION The Laying of the EDITORIAL Foundation Stone On Friday 20th September a number of members gathered to commemorate the laying of the Foundation Stone for the first Goetheanum in 1913. Michelle Kaplan gave us indications given by Rudolf Steiner and some of the first Eurythmists with regard to the Halleluiah and at 5.30pm we joined many an- throposophists around the world in the Halleluiah. Wilfried Bohm then spoke about the ceremony that surrounded the laying of this ‘stone’. “The Foundation stone is composed of a double pentagonal dodecahedron, made of sheet copper and soldered together on one side. Into this had been placed a document, which was a parchment of male calfskin. On it Dr. Steiner had drawn 3 waving lines representing the hierarchies weaving around the dodecahedron. This ‘stone’, its double 12 foldedness, is an image of the striving human soul – a microcosm planted in a macrocosm. Sparkling new roof for The address by Rudolf Steiner was made even more solemn because the very Sophia House! elements seemed to conspire against this human effort in the year preceding the outbreak of war to achieve something truly spiritual by constructing this Editorial unique building. Since only 3 days notice could be given only about 40 people could be present and braved the storm that broke on them after sunset on the Foundation Stone evening of 20 September 1913....just as the ceremony was beginning. Torrents of rain fell, and a gale howled around them as Rudolf Steiner’s powerful voice sounded out above the noise of the elements.

ALBERT STEFFEN CENTENNIAL ISSUE NUMBER 39 AUTUMN, 1984 ISSN 0021-8235 . Albert Steffen does not need to learn the way into the spiritual world from Anthroposophy. But from him Anthroposophy can come to know of a living “Pilgrimage ” — as an innate predisposition o f the soul — to the world of spirit. Such a poet-spirit must, if he is rightly understood, be recognized within the anthroposophical movement as the bearer o f a message from the spirit realm. It must indeed be felt as a good destiny that he wishes to work within this movement. • Camphill and the Future
DISABILITY STUDIES | RELIGION M C KANAN THE CAMPHILL MOVEMENT, one of the world’s largest and most enduring networks of intentional communities, deserves both recognition and study. CAMPHILL A ND Founded in Scotland at the beginning of the Second World War, Camphill communities still thrive today, encompassing thousands of people living in more CAMPHILL than one hundred twenty schools, villages, and urban neighborhoods on four continents. Camphillers of all abilities share daily work, family life, and festive THE FUTURE celebrations with one another and their neighbors. Unlike movements that reject mainstream society, Camphill expressly seeks to be “a seed of social renewal” by evolving along with society to promote the full inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities, who comprise nearly half of their residents. In this Spirituality and Disability in an Evolving Communal Movement multifaceted exploration of Camphill, Dan McKanan traces the complexities of AND THE the movement’s history, envisions its possible future, and invites ongoing dia- logue between the fields of disability studies and communal studies. “Dan McKanan knows Camphill better than anyone else in the academic world FUTURE and has crafted an absorbing account of the movement as it faces challenges eighty years after its founding.” TIMOTHY MILLER, author of The Encyclopedic Guide to American Inten- tional Communities “This book serves as a living, working document for the Camphill movement. Spirituality and Disability Communal Movement in an Evolving McKanan shows that disability studies and communal studies have more to offer each other than we recognize.” ELIZABETH SANDERS, Managing Director, Camphill Academy “With good research and wonderful empathy, McKanan pinpoints not only Cam- phill’s societal significance but also how this eighty-year-old movement can still bring potent remediation for the values and social norms of today’s world.” RICHARD STEEL, CEO, Karl König Institute DAN MCKANAN is the Emerson Senior Lecturer at Harvard Divinity School.

This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates the central role of a racially configured conception of evolution within Anthroposophy past and present.

  • Biblio-Tomberg
