Fun Day - Sun 25th July Cherry Orchard Playing Field

Capture the moments in your garden Instead of a garden safari, this year we are inviting everyone to participate in a virtual tour of gardens.

Please take photographs or even short videos of your garden, which we will post on the Council website. Your contribution can be of the whole garden or single plants, it does not matter. All we are asking is for you to share the beauty of your garden and add a splash of colour throughout the Summer.

Whatever you share, please be mindful that these images will be seen by a lot of people. We would ask that you avoid showing windows and doors, to safeguard your security. With this is mind we will only give the street you are in and not the house number.

We are really looking forward to receiving your contributions. Thank you.

If there is a problem in your area then talk to us and we will try to help.

13 What has Herne and Broomfield Parish Council ever done for us? Quite a lot in fact. Firstly, the parish council does a lot of work that is ‘unseen’. It is the first tier of local government, acting as a signpost between residents, and Canterbury City Council or Kent County Council. Secondly, not everyone realises what facilities, events, and services the parish council provides. Do you look forward to the Community Fun Day, now a joint event with Strode Park Foundation and St. Martin’s Church? Have your children attended the Children’s Christmas Party? Who asks Santa to tour Herne and Broomfield on his sleigh? Used the Multi Use Games Area, the BMX Track, or Gym equipment? Had an event at the Herne Centre? Walked around the Community Park, or have an allotment? What about the Community News newsletter? You might not read it cover-to-cover, although we really hope that you do, but have you picked it up for a contact number, or to find a local organisation? You might use the parish council website or Facebook page. Are there planning applications affecting the area? How would you know? Canterbury City Council must notify the parish council. Applications are published in the Planning & Highways Committee agendas, which are put up in the noticeboards, and posted on the parish council website and Facebook page. If there is a public enquiry regarding a development, who will be there to represent you and speak on your behalf? The parish council might not be able to change the decision, but they can work with the agencies involved to make improvements. The list could go on. Yes, the parish council may have limited powers; they cannot sort out traffic problems (KCC), rubbish collections (CCC), parking enforcement (CCC), fix potholes (KCC), refuse planning applications (CCC), but they do have an important role to play. By fostering good relationships, issues can be dealt with more effectively, and things can be done. The parish council are just one part of the local government picture. But equally importantly, so do you. Why? Because the members of the parish council are people like you. People of different backgrounds who care about the community they live in and want to do something about it. The parish council represents the residents, and the residents need to be represented on the parish council. Everybody has skills and ideas; it is having the confidence to use them. And if there is something that you are unsure of, there is plenty of training available. How? There are three ways to become a Herne and Broomfield parish councillor; stand for election, fill a vacant seat after an election, or fill a casual vacancy. The requirements are that you are 18 years of age or over, a British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union, and live or work within three miles of Herne and Broomfield parish. So, if you think you would like to become a parish councillor, please contact the parish office. They can provide you with the information you need. The parish council can achieve so much more by working together, so please be part of the solution. At the very least attend meetings, so you can see how the democratic process works. Also, share your ideas, things that can be passed on to the relevant authorities, but also take the time to consider becoming a councillor.

Thank you. is at the Herne Centre Michele Nicholson, Assistant Parish Clerk
