We in Yorkshire are very proud of our County Championship record over the years and 1 am sure that every player who has turned out for us this season has had one goal in mind; to add another championship title to our account. Little did we know, way back in Oetober, when we met on that foui Autumnal night at Sandal that we would be meeting in the Spring to decide which County will go to Twickenham! The prize of running out on that turf will be enough to ensure that we are about to witness a close, keenly fought, Championship semi-final today. 1 hope Cheshire enjoys their visit but not as weil as they did in October when they finished up defeating Yorkshire. Revenge today would be very sweet indeed. There can only be one winner of the match but 1 am sure that ail players who get onto the field today will give a good account of themselves and 1 hope that Vou ail enjoy yourselves. My thanks go to today's match officiais, without whom there would be no game, and also to the Otley Club for allowing us to use their fine facilities again. 1extend a personal invitation to the hard working 'Wednesday Gang', who keep the ground and buildings in such good condition, to join me in the bar 50 that along with the Secretary 1 can repay them the drink we owe from an earl ier date. Win or lose this will be our last game in Yorkshire this season, 50 1 must thank Allan Carlton for his continuing support and hospitality on behalf of Independent Agriculture, the County sponsors. long may the association between us two continue. If Cheshire win today 1 wish them weil in the Final. If Yorkshire win then 1 look forward to meeting Vou ail at Twickenham next month. Sunday, 10 May 1998 Independent Agriculture Yorkshire Cup Final Venue to be arranged THE YORKSHIRE CLUBS' GOLF DAY The inaugural Wooden Spoon Yorkshire Clubs Golf Day in association with the Yorkshire sponsors Independent Agriculture will be held at the end of the season. The event will take place at ,the Cookridge Hall Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, 6 May. The competition wilf~ be for teams of four from clubs affiliated to the Yorkshire RFU and will be run on'a~tableford format. Entry forms were sent to club secretaries or their nominees in mid-March and already the response has been very positive. The event really has two objectives; firstly to raise the profile of the Wooden Spoon Society among the rugby fratemity of Yorkshire and secondly to raise some money for those children less fortunate than ourselves. At 1.125 per team of four we believe it represents great value for money for 18 holes of golf, dinner, prizes to the value of over 1.1,000 and the pleasurable company of fellow rugbyenthusiastsl The Wooden Spoon Society is now THE official Charity of British and Irish rugby and proudly boasts the patronage of HRH the Princess Royal. Spoon was started back in 1983 by English rugby supporters drowning their sorrows after England had collected yet another ignominious "Wooden SpoonA'. They considered their plight insignificant when compared to the lives of children handicapped either mentally, physically or socially. On their retum from Dublin they set about organising a golf day and raised 1.8,000 towards a mini-bus for a needy school. Since those early days the fortunes of both England and the Spoon have improved dramatically. Spoon is now 1.1 million a year charity and is growing in strength annually. The Yorkshire Region of the Spoon is currently raising funds for local projects and this year's beneficiaries will be Tumshaws School near Huddersfield. Their profoundly handicapped children will benefit from the building of a 'sensory garden' due for completion in the summer holidays. Much of the money was raised at the very successful 'Lunch with the lions' at the Queen's Hotel in Leeds in December. We were honoured with the presence of Fran Cotton and the legendary Willie-John McBride who kept the 440 guests entertained weil into the aftemoon. Any of vou reading this today wishing for further information on the golf day please contact either of the following: Allan Carlton of Independent Agriculture on 01262 420 322 Or Mich Dearman, Event Chairman for the Spoon on 01924 493 582 For more general information on Spoon activities and the opportunity of membership* at the modest sum of 1.15 please contact Jim Clarke (membership secretary) on 0113 263 8598. *Included in your membership pack will be the specially commissioned tie/scarf in the colours of the four Home nations and bearing the white rose of Yorkshire. t~ C. LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS Firstly I have to thank the President, Steve Blackburn. Steve has done tremendous work over the year in travelling around clubs and representing the County. A truly approachable gentleman who has brought his own distinct sense of humour to the office. A lot of my Monday mornings have included a phone call from Steve starting with the phrase “I think I may have got away with it but……”. Needless to say the tales have me in stitches. As well as his Presidential duties he is an active member of the Disciplinary and Club & Community Committees which means he’s constantly on the go with his County missionary work. Steve has the huge support of his wife Val, who is also involved on the Mini & Junior committee. A couple entrenched in rugby and its administration, thank you both. To Rugby matters, Our Senior XV have reached the final and other reports in this booklet will cover how they got there, at the time of printing we are in the run up to the final at Twickenham against Hertfordshire whom we were runners up to in the final of the 2011-2012 season. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team, along with players who give up their time at the end of very busy seasons to support senior Rugby in Lancashire. Its an absolute joy to be involved in this side of County rugby and one which I look forward to each season.

LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS As ever my first task in my report is to thank the outgoing president, Tom Fitzgerald. I have worked closely with Tom for many years and have only the highest respect for him and the professionalism he conducts County business with. Tom has been the cornerstone of the day to day running of rugby in this County and has been instrumental in the formulation of new initiatives that have put us in a position where a lot of our work is seen as best practice. These include our Academy, Coach mentoring schemes and training conferences. With his close contacts and networks he has managed to secure some great players and leaders to deliver these schemes. Having spoken to Tom I know how much over and above his regular volunteering work the office of President involves, with over 150 club visits and official engagements with many thousands of miles covered. Tom is greatly supported by his wife Angela, both of whom I consider tireless supporters of this County and I am extremely pleased to class them as the closest of personal friends. To Rugby matters, Our Senior XV have reached the final and other reports in this booklet will cover how they got there, at the time of printing we are in the run up to the final at Twickenham against Cornwall whom we expect to be strong with very vocal support. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team, along with players who give up their time at the end of very busy seasons to support senior Rugby in Lancashire.

NORTH CLUBS RFU NORTH NEWSLETTER COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 2017 Season 2017-2018 We make no apology for again reminding all Clubs that they must conform exactly to the RFU Regulations concerning the Effective Registration of their Players. Twelve months ago, Clubs were reminded of this fundamental requirement in the 2016-2017 Newsletter, and whilst there has been a slightly reduced number of such transgressions in the past season, there is still a need for further improvement. If a Player does not have Effective Registration at the time of Kick Off in a League and/or RFU Cup Match, then the Player cannot play, or be a Replacement, until he is Effectively Registered. Please ensure that your Effective Registration Lists are kept up to date, are checked weekly, particularly at the time of Kick Off, and in addition, when transferring names from the Lists on to the Match Card, you do so accurately, and legibly. ELECTRONIC MATCH CARDS LENGTH OF SEASON All Level 5 (North Premier), and Level 6 (North 1 East Many Clubs wrongly believe that the Playing Season and North 1 West) Clubs, have now received details ends with the date of their last League game, which of how to compile the new Electronic Match Cards, historically, is usually the end of April. RFU which are to replace the paper version, at these two Regulation 11 (The Season), gives full details of the Levels. appropriate dates, covering all Competitions, including Age Grade. The 2017 – 2018 Season runs It will be interesting to see if their introduction is from 2 September 2017 until the 28 May 2018.

I have visited approximately half the Clubs in Cheshire and hope during my second year to have visited the vast majority of our member clubs. I have been to clubs who are playing in the National Leagues and the next visit has been to a club struggling to put out one team at the lowest league level. The striking feature of all clubs is the hard work and dedication of the volunteers many of them past players of advancing years who, week after week, in all weathers turn up to do their regular tasks and support their team.

As I continue as President of Cheshire RFU for a second term, I offer my sincere thanks to the clubs I visited last season for their hospitality and the opportunity to meet with key mem- bers of the clubs. For this 2019 - 2020 season I will endeavour to continue visiting the Cheshire clubs I was unable to visit last season. As we go into the new season the Financial Squeeze on the RFU continues with both direct and indirect impact on clubs and constituent bodies. Without question this coupled with other on/off the field issues will seriously question the viability of certain clubs. However, my visits to Cheshire clubs ranging from National 1 down through to the Halbro leagues showed clearly in most cases Cheshire clubs are in good health, as is the Cheshire Executive committee.
