MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is a pleasure to welcome Cheshire, both players and committee, to Otley today for the semi-final of the 1998 County Championship.

We in Yorkshire are very proud of our County Championship record over the years and 1 am sure that every player who has turned out for us this season has had one goal in mind; to add another championship title to our account. Little did we know, way back in Oetober, when we met on that foui Autumnal night at Sandal that we would be meeting in the Spring to decide which County will go to Twickenham! The prize of running out on that turf will be enough to ensure that we are about to witness a close, keenly fought, Championship semi-final today. 1 hope Cheshire enjoys their visit but not as weil as they did in October when they finished up defeating Yorkshire. Revenge today would be very sweet indeed.

There can only be one winner of the match but 1 am sure that ail players who get onto the field today will give a good account of themselves and 1 hope that Vou ail enjoy yourselves.

My thanks go to today's match officiais, without whom there would be no game, and also to the Otley Club for allowing us to use their fine facilities again. 1extend a personal invitation to the hard working 'Wednesday Gang', who keep the ground and buildings in such good condition, to join me in the bar 50 that along with the Secretary 1 can repay them the drink we owe from an earl ier date.

Win or lose this will be our last game in Yorkshire this season, 50 1 must thank Allan Carlton for his continuing support and hospitality on behalf of Independent Agriculture, the County sponsors. long may the association between us two continue.

If Cheshire win today 1 wish them weil in the Final. If Yorkshire win then 1 look forward to meeting Vou ail at Twickenham next month.

Sunday, 10 May 1998 Independent Agriculture Yorkshire Cup Final Venue to be arranged THE YORKSHIRE CLUBS' GOLF DAY

The inaugural Wooden Spoon Yorkshire Clubs Golf Day in association with the Yorkshire sponsors Independent Agriculture will be held at the end of the season. The event will take place at ,the Cookridge Hall Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, 6 May. The competition wilf~ be for teams of four from clubs affiliated to the Yorkshire RFU and will be run on'a~tableford format. Entry forms were sent to club secretaries or their nominees in mid-March and already the response has been very positive.

The event really has two objectives; firstly to raise the profile of the Wooden Spoon Society among the rugby fratemity of Yorkshire and secondly to raise some money for those children less fortunate than ourselves. At 1.125 per team of four we believe it represents great value for money for 18 holes of golf, dinner, prizes to the value of over 1.1,000 and the pleasurable company of fellow rugbyenthusiastsl

The Wooden Spoon Society is now THE official Charity of British and Irish rugby and proudly boasts the patronage of HRH the Princess Royal. Spoon was started back in 1983 by English rugby supporters drowning their sorrows after had collected yet another ignominious "Wooden SpoonA'. They considered their plight insignificant when compared to the lives of children handicapped either mentally, physically or socially. On their retum from Dublin they set about organising a golf day and raised 1.8,000 towards a mini-bus for a needy school. Since those early days the fortunes of both England and the Spoon have improved dramatically. Spoon is now 1.1 million a year charity and is growing in strength annually.

The Yorkshire Region of the Spoon is currently raising funds for local projects and this year's beneficiaries will be Tumshaws School near Huddersfield. Their profoundly handicapped children will benefit from the building of a 'sensory garden' due for completion in the summer holidays. Much of the money was raised at the very successful 'Lunch with the lions' at the Queen's Hotel in Leeds in December. We were honoured with the presence of Fran Cotton and the legendary Willie-John McBride who kept the 440 guests entertained weil into the aftemoon.
