“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

By taking an analysis of the gun laws of the United States with those of Australia and Canada it can be concluded that some aspects of strict gun control can reduce the number of mass shootings.

One of these pockets was right in their midst, only a few minutes from the heart of the city: the Gotham suburb of Bristol. The ancient sycamores that once shaded Iroquois hunters tracking deer and pheasant had never been pulled down to build tract houses on quarter-acre plots. The roads were paved, but they didn’t lead to stripmalls or “superstores.” They led, under a canopy of those same leafy sycamores, to quaint, family-owned businesses like Perdita’s Florals and Harriman’s Gourmet Pantry. Mr. Harriman still wore a clean white apron, kept the customer accounts in a handwritten ledger, and tallied them himself at the end of each month. He didn’t bother sending the bill to Wayne Manor. He merely folded it in a brown envelope, wrote WAYNE on the flap, and handed it to Alfred Pennyworth when he came in the next Monday or Thursday to do his twice-weekly shopping. Alfred slipped the envelope into his pocket, for he would never insult Mr. Harriman by checking it in front of him. He would open it tonight while having his nightcap with Miss Selina’s little friend Nutmeg, and reconcile it with the records kept on his laptop.

If there was one thing that made her physically ill, it was weakness. Nature was not weak. Nature was the ultimate power. What could man make that Nature could not destroy? Their fleshy bodies, their cities, their pitiful notions of achievement? What was a church compared to a forest? A painting compared to a mountain, a symphony next to a flower… Well, actually, she liked music. Even her plants liked music. Mozart in particular. And there was nothing in Nature to compare it to. The mathematical underpinnings of music were absolutely man-made, and it had to be said, it was… beautiful. A THOUGHT THAT MADE HER WANT TO SCREAM! Beautiful belonged to Nature. It belonged to Flowers. It was hers, and this filthy animal, masculine, homo sapien, civilized, plant-eating THING had made something that was wholly theirs, wholly unique, and wholly beautiful. JUST HAVING THE THOUGHT MADE HER WANT TO RIP HER HAIR OUT BY THE ROOT! It was so weak. Pamela’s little thoughts and feelings. As the living embodiment of the Goddess Lifeforce, Poison Ivy rebelled at the idea of hating any part of herself, but that, that… Pamela had become such a burden. People made something beautiful. It was disgusting. But now she had that thought in her head, and it was all because of that part of herself that, for lack of a better term, she called Pam.

Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

BLACK: SCRAWL: Amazons (n.), a warlike race of females, from the country about the Thermodon river with it’s capital Themiscyra inhabited only by amazons, who were governed by a queen. Their children, when of the female sex, were brought up by the Amazon mothers, and trained in their customary pursuits of war, riding, hunting and cultivating the land. ELECTRICITY. Huge glowing arcs. A shape appears-two iron W’s melded together. Growing. The Wonder Woman SYMBOL. BOOM UP ON: A LITTLE GIRL. Piercing blue eyes, one slightly swollen and set into a bruised, bloody, dirt-grimed face. This is DIANA OF THEMISCYRA, seven years old. She stares, unmoving, breathing hard. Tears on her small cheeks, but they don’t match the fierce determination in those eyes. It’s visibly obvious this little girl has fought a war. WOMAN’S VOICE (O.S.) (Greek) Last lesson, Diana. A WOMAN’S HAND appears, jeweled, it caresses Diana’s chin, brushes the sweaty, jet black strands of Diana’s long hair from her cut brow. WOMAN’S VOICE (O.S.) (Greek) Are you thirsty, little one? Nothing. Silence. Diana just stares, breathing, unnaturally focused. The Mystery Woman leans in close to Diana, still unrevealed; their LIPS touch, a mother/daughter kiss. The Mystery Woman rises, turns and walks away; she is a stunning, older version of Diana, this is QUEEN HIPPOLYTE, Diana’s mother.
