Amerine (1911-1998) was Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. He was an author, lecturer, bibliographer, and consultant on wine matters. The collection includes correspondence, teaching files, research, and writing on grape growing, wine production and sensory evaluation. Also present are copies of Amerine's speeches, travel diaries and itineraries, collected foreign and domestic wine labels, menus, photographs, and memorabilia. Researchers should contact Archives and Special Collections to request collections, as many are stored offsite. Biography Maynard A. Amerine (1911-1998) was Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. He was born in San Jose and spent his childhood on his family's farm near Modesto, California, where he attended school with Ernest and Julio Gallo. In 1935, while still completing his doctorate, Amerine became UC Davis's new Department of Viticulture and Enology's first official researcher. He became a full professor in 1952 and chaired the Department of Viticulture and Enology from 1957 to 1962. Amerine retired from the department in 1974, but remained active in teaching, public speaking, and travel until his death in 1998. Amerine's sixteen books and hundreds of articles remain foundational texts in the study of wine making and sensory evaluation. Amerine Papers document Amerine's lifelong career in viticulture and enology. The collection includes Amerine's teaching files, research, and writing on grape growing, wine production and sensory evaluation, as well as his correspondence with publishers, researchers, and enologists around the world. Also present are copies of Amerine's speeches, travel diaries and itineraries, collected foreign and domestic wine labels, menus, photographs, and memorabilia. It currently covers Series 1-6 and Series 8: Biographical Materials, Correspondence and Notes, Teaching and Research Files, Travel Itineraries and Diaries, Writings, Speeches, and Menus and Wine Labels.
