Indian Music I INTRODUCTION
Indian Music I INTRODUCTION Classical Dance of South India The southern Indian kathakali is a dance drama that dates from the 17th century. Several schools of acting have since developed around the framework established for the kathakali, which also borrows from the martial arts tradition of kalaripayat. Aside from performances for tourists in kathakali clubs, the dance drama is performed during ceremonies for religious offerings. The music of the kathakali is based on the art music tradition of southern India; the rhythmic cycle and melodic scale direct the dancer’s movements. "Kathakali Dance Theater" from Ritual Music and Theater of Kerala (Cat.# Le Chant du Monde LDX 274 010) (p)1989 Le Chant du Monde. All rights reserved./Photo Researchers, Inc. Indian Music, vocal and instrumental music of India, making up a mosaic of different genres and levels of sophistication. At one extreme, classical music is performed in the urban concert halls for purely artistic reasons, and, at the other, many kinds of functional rural musics accompany life-cycle and agricultural rites. In between are many other musical genres of different regions of the country, reflecting the diversity of its peoples, their lifestyles, and their languages. II CLASSICAL MUSIC The origins of Indian classical music can be traced to the Natya Shastra (about 2nd century AD), a Sanskrit treatise on drama that also describes the music of the theater, probably a forerunner of present-day concert music. Two classical traditions are now recognized: Hindustani in north India and Karnāṭak (also referred to as Karnatic or Carnatic) in the south. This division was probably accentuated in the 16th century as a result of the influence of Muslim invaders in the north. -

Classification of Indian Musical Instruments with the General
Classification of Indian Musical Instruments With the general background and perspective of the entire field of Indian Instrumental Music as explained in previous chapters, this study will now proceed towards a brief description of Indian Musical Instruments. Musical Instruments of all kinds and categories were invented by the exponents of the different times and places, but for the technical purposes a systematic-classification of these instruments was deemed necessary from the ancient time. The classification prevalent those days was formulated in India at least two thousands years ago. The first reference is in the Natyashastra of Bharata. He classified them as ‘Ghana Vadya’, ‘Avanaddha Vadya’, ‘Sushira Vadya’ and ‘Tata Vadya’.1 Bharata used word ‘Atodhya Vadya’ for musical instruments. The term Atodhya is explained earlier than in Amarkosa and Bharata might have adopted it. References: Some references with respect to classification of Indian Musical Instruments are listed below: 1. Bharata refers Musical Instrument as ‘Atodhya Vadya’. Vishnudharmotta Purana describes Atodhya (Ch. XIX) of four types – Tata, Avnaddha, Ghana and Sushira. Later, the term ‘Vitata’ began to be used by some writers in place of Avnaddha. 2. According to Sangita Damodara, Tata Vadyas are favorite of the God, Sushira Vadyas favourite of the Gandharvas, whereas Avnaddha Vadyas of the Rakshasas, while Ghana Vadyas are played by Kinnars. 3. Bharata, Sarangdeva (Ch. VI) and others have classified the musical instruments under four heads: 1 Fundamentals of Indian Music, Dr. Swatantra Sharma , p-86 53 i. Tata (String Instruments) ii. Avanaddha (Instruments covered with membrane) iii. Sushira (Wind Instruments) iv. Ghana (Solid, or the Musical Instruments which are stuck against one another, such as Cymbals). -

Sarali Varisai
Sarali varisai Raga: Mayamalavagowla (15th Melakartha Ragam) Arohana: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S Avarohana: S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S Talam: Adi Notation Courtesy: Rani, www.karnatic.com and Chitraveena Ravi Kiran's book Notes from Chitra Veena Ravi Kiran's book (with some additions): Getting Started: Sustaining Notes - KARVAI The first step is to have a tanpura or shruti box, which will provide the basic note "Sa" and the fifth note from it, which is "Paa". You can seek your guru's help in determining your ideal pitch, which enables you to traverse at least two octaves (from Paa in the lower octave to Paa in the higher octave) comfortable over a period of time. It is equally vital to learn to tune either of these instruments from one's master. Then listen to it carefully and try to register the notes (sa - pa - sa) in your mind. Then try to sing these two constant notes tunefully, making an effort to understand the relationship between the frequencies that "Sa" and "Pa" are sung at. Subsequently, the teacher will introduce the rest of the notes, and here again, you should try to make yourself aware of where (in terms of frequency) they are, with respect to "Sa". Singing in tune is the primary source of joy. Now the teacher can introduce a raga, say Mayamalavagowla, for the basic exercises. Mayamalavagowla is the 15th melakartha with the notes: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S. Most teachers prefer to use this raga because it has different intervals.
