The exercises and activities within are designed to be used in the immediate run-up to Christmas during this time, and also in the November / December half-term. They commonly began with German soldiers and officers putting up Christmas trees, shouting or writing Christmas greetings, and singing songs recognisable to their British counterparts such as Stille Nacht (Silent Night). From German fronts from the North Sea to Switzerland, made possible by these beginnings troops met in no-man’s land to bury their dead, shared traditions of Christian celebration. It was a hopeful moment of exchange gifts and souvenirs, share festive food and drink, give recognition of common humanity and a (brief) rejection of the terrible cigarettes and cigars, sing and entertain each other, swap names and violence of industrialised war pursued by rulers in a deadly game of addresses, conduct joint religious services, and even, some letters global imperial competition for territories and resources. The government’s commitment to remember this important episode in modern European history is welcome, but it is a concern that the language of ‘celebrations’ 7 THE MARTIN LUTHER KING PEACE COMMITTEE These resources have been put together by the Northumbria and Newcastle Universities Martin Luther King Peace Committee. Rev. Dr. King came to Tyneside in 1967 to receive an honorary degree, Newcastle University having the distinction of being the only UK university to so honour him. The Committee commemorates his visit and exists to ‘build cultures of peace’ by drawing on his ideas and example. 8 Rev. King’s distinctive Christian philosophy of enemy love and nonviolent resistance to injustice was decisively influenced by mentoring from members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR), of which he was a member.

War Erupts A few months earlier in August 1914 a titanic clash of armies began. For years Germany had been planning to invade France, and after a quick victory, send troops to defeat Russia before the “Russian Bear” could become a serious rival to Germany. The time to carry out these plans came unexpectedly when Serbian nationalists assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne. Germany, Russia, France, and then England were drawn into the conflict. This war, which would come to be known as the Great War, was supposed to be over before Christmas. Instead of a swift victory for one side, the war became a virtual stalemate as both sides literally “dug in” by creating miles of defensive trenches—long narrow pits from which soldiers could fire machine guns at an attacking enemy. Neither side could gain an advantage against an entrenched enemy. The space that separated enemy lines (sometimes as little as a hundred yards distance) was filled with barbed wire and was dubbed “no man’s land.” Occasionally one side or the other would attempt an infantry charge.

    DECEMBER 1914 As it was the festive season the Hamilton Hippodrome were running the Panto 'Goodie Two Shoes' starring some local 'mirth provokers' and the wounded Belgians soldiers housed in the area were taken to the cinema by the Provost's wife, Mrs Moffat. Collections were being made for the children of the men who are on active duty over the Christmas season and to put into some kind of perspective the numbers of men who were fighting abroad, the Burnbank Parish Church roll of honour already contained over 300 names. The volunteer home guard Hamilton Citizen Force had over 100 members and nationwide the number of these was said to be one million. Yet a military strategy expert poured scorn on the idea that Britain could be invaded as the Germans would have difficulty in transporting the number of men to mount an assault and even more trouble keeping them supplied with food and ammunition. Across the country at Dover, German warships bombed the area for two hours, destroying houses, a church and a school, with estimates that 100 were killed and 450 were injured. This explained why a man who was caught signalling Morse code from a mountaintop to a passing ship in Wales was put on £600 bail, which would be around £15,000 in today’s money. Another was given eight weeks in prison for 'spreading a report likely to cause harm among the civil population'. The ex-consul from Germany had his conviction of high treason quashed, saving him from the death penalty. In international news, a toddler girl from New Zealand donated her pet lamb to be auctioned off to raise funds for the war effort.

The Island of Ireland Peace Park, Messines, Belgium, stands on a gentle slope overlooking the site of one of the most extraordinary events of World War I and, indeed, world history. German soldiers had been sent thousands of small Christmas trees and candles from back home. As night enveloped an unusually still and silent Christmas Eve, a soldier placed one of the candlelit trees upon the parapet of his trench. Others followed and before long a chain of flickering lights spread for miles along the German line. British and French soldiers observed in amazement.

Abstract Little art-historical scholarship has been dedicated to fine art responding to the British home front during the First World War. Within pre-war British society concepts of sexual difference functioned to promote masculine authority. Nevertheless in Britain during wartime enlarged female employment alongside the presence of injured servicemen suggested feminine authority and masculine weakness, thereby temporarily destabilizing pre-war values. Adopting a socio-historical perspective, this thesis argues that artworks engaging with the home front have been largely excluded from art history because of partiality shown towards masculine authority within the matrices of British society. Furthermore, this situation has been supported by the writing of art history, which has, arguably, followed similar premise.

The book tells the life story of Harry Patch, who fought in the First World War, and eventually became the last surviving soldier to have fought in the trenches. He died in 2009, aged 111. Mud, Blood and Futility At 11 a.m. on Monday 11 November 1918, after four and quarter years in which howitzers boomed, shells screamed, machine guns rattled, rifles cracked, and the cries of the wounded and dying echoed across the battlefields of France and Belgium, everything suddenly fell quiet. A thick fog had descended that 5 morning and in the muffled landscape the stillness seemed almost palpable. For those left alive at the Front – a desolate landscape in which once bustling towns and villages had been reduced to piles of smoking rubble, and acre upon acre of woodland reduced to splintered and blackened stumps – there was little cause for rejoicing. The longed-for day had finally arrived but most 10 combatants were too enervated to enjoy it. In the great silence, some men were able to remember and reflect on what they had been through. Others simply felt lost. The war had swallowed them up: it occupied their every waking moment, just as it was to haunt their dreams in the future. There have been other wars since 1918 and in all of them combatants have 15 had to endure privation, discomfort, misery, the loss of comrades and appalling injuries. Even so, the First World War continues to exert a powerful grip upon our collective imagination.
