    Welcome to 2137 Calgary Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps This handbook is designed for new recruits at 2137 Calgary Highlanders RCACC. Use this handbook. Read it, make notes in it, ask questions about it, and discuss it with your section commander, Platoon Warrant Officer and other senior Cadets. Talk about it with your parents (let them read it).     Critical Events: Métis Servicewomen’s WWII Stories with Dorothy Chartrand Judy M. Iseke and Leisa A. Email: [email protected] 2 Abstract Stories of Indigenous women’s experiences in the Armed Forces during wartime were critical events in the lives of women in service to their country (Campbell, 1990; Poulin, 2006; 2007a, 2007b) but little is often recorded about their experiences particularly during World War II (WWII). Dorothy Chartrand, as part of an Indigenous Storytelling project, documented her experiences as a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corp in WWII. Dorothy’s stories are shared from portions of two recently completed documentary films (Iseke, 2010a, 2010b) and additional recordings of her experiences (see Iseke-Barnes, 2009). Dorothy’s stories aid in understanding motivation to enlist in voluntary public service, experiences entering the service, armed forces relocation practices and effects on servicewomen in WWII, women putting their lives at risk, marriage during wartime service, and the impact of and upon servicewomen and their families during armed combat. Conclusions suggest that wartime experiences shaped lives and were critical events in the lives of Indigenous women. Piper and Bugler given opportunity to practice their parts 2200 Conclude for the day 11 November 2016 Pre Event 0900 Organizing Committee arrives at Mewata Armoury (Group activity confined to ½ parade square to permit Calgary Highlanders form up space and departure from Mewata armoury.) Cadets departing from 604 RCACS are asked to not be on the Calgary Highland Side of armoury parade square until after the Calgary Highlanders have left the building. 1000 Band Members begin to arrive and will proceed to the second floor balcony. CO RCSU (NW) and UCWO arrive at Mewata Armoury 10:15 Officers Briefing for unit CO’s takes place in classroom 10:30 Briefing for Wreath layers takes place. Others have names from the type of unit and the role played as light or heavy cavalry (Scots Dragoon Guards; French 4e Régiment de Chasseurs). Some are associated with places (The Ontario Regiment; South Alberta Light Horse). We belong to a small group that is identified with an individual (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; Governor General's Horse Guards). What makes the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) unique is that we are named after an individual who used his own money to raise a unit to fight in a foreign war. That individual had an exceptional impact on Canada’s future. Whether it was his association with the exploration of the west through the Hudson’s Bay Company, his singular vote in Parliament that ousted a government, or his driving of the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, there is no question that Donald Smith, Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal was an extraordinary individual. The soldiers that carried his name into battle in the Boer War were unique in their own right.
